Bill Rest is an 11-year-old boy in the USA. This summer, everyone in his town knew about him.
One Friday afternoon, Bill was on his way back home. The bus ride usually takes him about 30 minutes. So Bill started to read a book.
When Bill was busy reading, he heard someone shouting. He got up to see what was up. Then he saw that the driver was not in her seat. She couldn’t move!
Bill left his seat quickly. He got the two-way radio in the front of the bus and asked for help. Every bus has the radio. Lots of people could hear him. Soon, an ambulance (救护车) came. It took the driver to the hospital. The doctors saved the driver in time.
Bill could do this because he knew a lot about bus rules. Last year, some bus drivers came to his school. They taught the students how to use the two-way radio when someone is in danger.
How lucky the driver was!

5 . Volunteering allows us to connect with our community and make it a better place. In Indonesia (印度尼西亚), I did a lot of volunteer work to help children, the elderly and the environment.
Last year, I volunteered at a recycling (回收) center in Indonesia with my friends. As soon as we arrived, we saw huge piles of plastic (塑料) bottles on the ground. I wondered, “What are we going to do with those?”
A group of people from the recycling center welcomed us. One person said that bottles and caps (瓶盖) were made of different materials and had different uses. He said, “Today, you are going to remove (除去) the plastic covers and caps from all of these plastic bottles.” I put on my mask and gloves, sat down on a stool (凳子) and started grabbing plastic bottles and removing their plastic covers with a cutting tool.
There were straws (吸管) and trash (垃圾) inside the bottles, so I had to remove these items. Some of my friends were not comfortable doing this work and neither was I, but it was important work and was part of a larger effort to improve the environment. After we finished removing the covers and caps from the plastic bottles, we crushed (压碎) all the plastic bottles and put them all in a larger box.
After a long day, we finally finished our work. Though it was a simple job, it would have a lasting influence (影响) on our lives and our environment. That’s what volunteering is about. How meaningful it is!

If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? Don’t listen to people who say that the young people today often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice Hamilton, 17
I’m going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths (小路) in the mountains. It’s going to be wonderful — I’ll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It’ll be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time.
.Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
Trish Anderson, 16
I’m going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I’ll work for a program called Reading For Life. Every day, I’m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.
