Jeremy always tried to be the best, no matter what he was doing. Jeremy’s biggest wish was to do better than his classmate Chris.
One day, Jeremy’s teacher told the class that the school was going to hold a race to raise money to buy new computers. She wanted the students to sign up for the race and ask their neighbors and friends to help by making a donation. Jeremy wasn’t the fastest runner, but all he could think about was winning. He signed up for the race at once. Chris signed up, too.
As Jeremy walked to school the next day, he saw Chris passing out flyers (传单) about the race to his neighbors and friends. Jeremy thought this was a waste of time.
That night, Jeremy’s father asked him why he didn’t tell his neighbors or friends about the race. Jeremy said he just wanted to win the race and beat Chris. What Jeremy said let his father down. His father shook his head and said, “You’re running for the wrong reason. You should run to help your school. It’s meaningless if you win the race without collecting any money.”
Jeremy didn’t take his father’s words seriously. On the day of the race, Jeremy ran as fast as he could. He passed Chris and won the race. Jeremy couldn’t be happier. But the next day at school, no one congratulated him for the race. The teacher said that they hadn’t raised enough money for the computers.
Jeremy finally realized that his father was right. He came in the first place, but because he didn’t help raise money, he wasn’t a real winner.

8 . In her small home in the capital of Greece, Athens, 93-year-old Ioanna Matsouka has knit (编织) thousands of brightly colored scarves for children in need. She has no plans to stop.
Since she took up knitting in the 1990s, Matsouka has easily made over 3, 000 scarves. By the door to her home, bags are filled with her latest creations. In the beginning, the scarves were gifted to friends. As the number of scarves grew, they were given away to children’s homes across Greece.
“The fact that I give her scarves away gives her strength (力量) to keep,” said her daughter Angeliki. She talked about mails her mother received over the years: “Thank you, be well, keep going. You gave happiness to children; you gave hope to people...”
Angeliki says her mother is an example of strength and hope. Matsouka wakes up every morning, drinks a glass of milk and gets to work. She takes a break for lunch and a short sleep, then knits into the night. Matsouka knits one scarf a day now. She may have even found the secret to a long life in it. “Until I die, I will be knitting. It brings me joy to share them. It’s the happiness I get from giving,” she said.
