3 . ①As a doctor specializing in nutrition (专攻营养学), Bian Huawei did not expect that a stop at a school in Yunnan Province 14 years ago would guide him toward a meaningful thing.

②In 2009, he paid his first visit to Runan Primary School to check if children were getting enough nutrition tion. During that visit, Bian bought a whole pig for the students and teachers to eat. In 2010, Bian paid another other visit to the school and paid for fresh meat for the whole school year.

③Bian made his support cover more primary schools. He offered professional (专业的) advice on how to improve the diets of the students. In 2011, Bian also paid to set up greenhouses at the schools to provide students with more kinds of vegetables.

④One year after the program started, the stunting rate (发育迟缓率) of students at Runan Primary School has dropped from 28.1% to 14.4%. Two to three years later, no malnutrition was found among the students. However, Bian believes that there is still a long way to go to improve children’s health. “Children’s growth during puberty (青春期) is very important. If they’re not healthy at this age , there will be problems in the future,” he said.

⑤Bian takes pictures of each student when he visits the school and gives them the photos next time. “every time I go, the children don’t know my name. They just know that it is the uncle who’s helping them. They take pictures with me and happily play with me. I feel happy,” Bian said.

5 . A group of students at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology have helped families find their loved ones.

The volunteer team of students has been helping many parents look for their children by restoring (恢复) over 1,000 photos. The team was set up by Sheng Jianzhong four years ago. He first thought to restore photos of missing children when he saw a missing child notice with a poor-quality image (劣质图像) in 2020. He wanted to help the parents restore their images. With the clear photos, the parents can post them on the Internet to find their missing children. But it cannot be completed by one person alone, he needed a team. Luckily, many students volunteered to join in Sheng’s project.

In December 2021, father Sun Haiyang finally found his son after 14 years of searching. Sheng’s team played an important role in finding the boy, and Sun expressed his thanks to them when they met. It has helped 11 missing children find their families—nine in 2022 and two in 2023.

Sometimes the families don’t even know the team’s help. “But we are happy for them,” said Zhang Shaoyun, a member of the team.

In the future, Sheng plans to build a better team to run the program. “It would train more young people to work for good causes,” he said.

Ever since I was 5 years old, my mother has been a volunteer at the Nanjing Museum. This meant that every weekend, I found myself going along with her, spending my time among ancient relics (遗迹) and historical exhibits (展品).     1     I also had listened to stories and taking part in activities.

Though I spent my weekends at the museum instead of playing outside, I don’t regret my childhood experience. The discipline (纪律) and patience I learned from it shaped me into an active and self-disciplined person.     2    

The journey began with fun training lessons.     3     Among the different skills needed for a museum volunteer, especially a little interpreter (讲解员), strong communication abilities are seen as important.     4     And we were also told how to answer their questions and explain things in a way that makes sense to them, depending on their age and interests.

One of my most memorable experiences was explaining the arched (拱形的) door of the glazed arch of Grand Bao’en Temple (大报恩寺琉璃拱门).     5     I shared its ancient history and amazing craftsmanship (工艺) with visitors. They were all very interested in it. I felt so proud that I had a deeper understanding of our cultural heritage (文化遗产). My love and pride for traditional Chinese culture will always be with me in my life.
