1 . Every Sunday afternoon, villagers in Jiantouzhou, Hunan, can hear some music when they walk by Li Shuyou’s house. In the house, some children _________ traditional Chinese instruments (乐器), like erhu and sanxian.

A canteen in Zhejiang Province recently introduced “happiness blind boxes”. They cost just 6 yuan but have one meat dish and a vegetarian dish. To keep what’s inside each box a surprise, stickers (贴纸) are placed on the top to cover the “main dish”.     4    

The canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community even introduced self-service meals. The buffet (自助餐) there is priced at just 2.48 yuan per 100 grams.     5     The canteen has attracted many customers nearby. “Though it’s a community canteen, it is designed beautifully. The environment here is fantastic and very clean,” a customer said.

3 . As the saying goes, “The roses in her hand, the flavor (味道) in mine.”

A few years ago, a friend gave me a restaurant gift card, and I picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. It felt good taking my family to a nice restaurant. The meal was delicious, and we all had a good time together. The gift card covered almost all of the check (帐单). I reached into my wallet to get enough money to cover the rest. I saw two bills (钞票) inside. The first would cover the rest of the check. The second would cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip (小费). I reached down to pick the first one.

At that moment, my mind went back to 30 years ago. I was working in a restaurant much like this one. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness in their faces at the end of the day.

I was back in the present again, with my fingers touching the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hard-working waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.

We are all one family in this world. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace pain with joy.

8 . It was a cold Christmas Eve. David saw a middle-aged man sitting in front of the supermarket with a sign that said “Please help”.
