Volunteering is good for not only those who receive help, but also the help-givers. For school-aged kids, volunteering helps build social skills and develop self-worth awareness (意识) . Through volunteering, high school students may help themselves get into a good college, and college students can improve themselves for better jobs after graduation. Volunteering truly makes a difference. | You should always put volunteering safety in the first place. Join the organized training actively before volunteering each time. It will teach you some professional skills and some ways of dealing with the dangerous situations. And it’s important to buy some insurance (保险) for yourself when necessary. Don’t tell others about your private information. Remember to protect yourself at any time. |

There are two kinds of volunteering according to the time you spend on it. If you are a first-time volunteer, short-term work will provide you with the best chance to see if the work is right for you. If you are experienced and have more free time, serving a longer-term volunteer program gives you the chance to develop a higher level of skill. | Perhaps, you don’t know how to choose volunteer work. Here are the tips. On the one hand, you will have a more enjoyable volunteering experience if you spend some time thinking about your goals, interests and the reason why you want to volunteer. On the other hand, one chance of volunteering looks great in the advertisement, but it’s quite different in the reality. So it’s a good try to visit different organizations and have a talk with the staff and other volunteers. |

What Would You Do? is a TV program on American ABC. The program which is hosted by the news reporter John Quinones is popular with many people. It tests what people will do when they see someone is in trouble so as to remind us to stand up for the people in need. Here is last week’s program.
In a cake shop, an actress acted as a blind woman named Pamela, and an actor acted as a man clerk who looked down upon the blind woman. Hidden cameras were recording what would happen. The blind woman came into the shop and bought a box of twelve cup cakes. The clerk treated the woman badly at first. Then he cheated her when he gave her the change. He only gave her 6 single dollar bills instead of 34 dollars.
Would someone be brave enough to stand up for the blind woman? Yes! A customer in the cake shop stopped the clerk from cheating the blind woman and treating her badly. And other customers joined in soon. John appeared in the end and interviewed the first customer who helped Pamela out. 8 . Are you looking for a good volunteer (志愿者) activity? Get outdoors and go gleaning (拾遗)!
What is gleaning? Well, let’s begin with the problem of food waste on farms. Some farm products are good but look imperfect. Farmers don’t usually try to sell them in markets. Many of them are left to rot in the fields. This is a great waste. And gleaning is about reducing this waste—by collecting the products.
These days, many volunteer groups go out gleaning in order to provide those in need with fresh, healthy food.
Holly’s group is one of them. Her volunteers collect about 300 boxes of food each week. Once, a local fruit farmer called Holly to ask for gleaning services. He had a large field with more than 700 fruit trees. A member of Holly’s group created an online map of the trees. With the help of the map, the volunteers quickly collected the fruit from the trees.
Besides this, Holly’s volunteers have also picked other vegetables from local farms. The food has been sent to food banks and community kitchens in her area.
Gleaning helps solve the problems of farm waste and food shortages (短缺). And gleaners also find the work brings them a sense of achievement. “We can get outside and do something good for the world,” said Holly. “I feel pleased whenever I go gleaning!”

9 . One of the luckiest things in life is that someone offers help when you are in need. Such warm stories happened in 2022 in Shenzhen.
We had never depended on deliverymen for our daily needs so heavily as we did, when we worked from home to stop the spread of the epidemic(疫情). Some of the deliverymen were afraid that they would not be able to come out to work the next day if they went home and found an overnight lockdown(封锁)in their communities. So they chose to sleep under overpasses(天桥)or on park benches. Photos of them sleeping in those outdoor places were put online. The next day, the government took action and offered them free places to live in either at hotels, at schools or at courier stations(快递站).
Another recent case that shows ordinary people are cared for was about a bun seller(卖包子的人). The man left a message below a post on the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission’s WeChat account. He said he had trouble running his store because of the epidemic. Community workers in his area paid him a visit to see what they could do to help. On the night of the same day, the man received an unexpected large order from his community.
There is a long list of such small acts of kindness in almost every corner of the city. It tells us love and care is powerful to help us overcome the difficulties.
