Mr. Chen is living in western China with his wife and two sons. One year ago, he discovered that he had cancer. The doctor told him that he needed an operation at once. And he said the operation would     1     thousands of yuan. It was too much money for a farmer like Mr. Chen and his wife. They had no jobs and     2     their sons were at school. The situation seemed     3    .

Two weeks later, however, Mr. Chen got some     4     news. A health care project provides medical treatment for poor patients in     5     China. They pay only half of the cost or even less. Thanks to the project and the kindness of     6     family and neighbors, he was able to receive an operation just     7     time to prevent(阻止) the illness from getting worse. Now he has returned to his family.

The goal (目的) of this health care project is to     8     the situation for poor people in western China. So far, the project has provided more than 5,000 people     9     medical help. The Chinese government is also working together with other countries and international organizations to do this. They hope to     10     a new health care model (医疗模式) for China.

5 . It was a warm and sunny day. Tammy put on her best clothes. She would go on a ________ trip with her family. The trip was different from usual ones. On the way, someone ________ hello to them, but Tammy could hear nothing because she was deaf (聋的).

Some people think that deaf children are not very smart. However, Dr. Steven doesn’t think so. So he works hard to help children with hearing ________in poor places. He has helped hundreds of children ________ the world. With Dr. Steven’s help, many children like Tammy can start to learn with hearing aids. They are ________ and do very well in school.

Dr. Steven also helps people learn how to take good care of their ________. That helps them hear clearer or even get rid of (摆脱) hearing aids slowly. He knows that one can’t ________enjoy the beauty of the world without hearing any sound.

As for Tammy, she is experiencing the world in a new ________. She is so thankful to Dr. Steven. She hopes that other children with hearing problems can get help, too.

6 . Jennifer and her sister Katie learned how to care for others in Sunday School. This gave them a great ________! “Let’s start a new club at school called the Care Club!” Katie said.

“Care ________ to care and respect everybody.” Jennifer thought it was a wonderful idea, too. Every night they ________ what to do the next day. They wanted to help others.

They always stayed after school to help other students to learn. On the weekend they helped walk a neighbour’s dog. They loved helping others and they had so much ________ doing it as well.

7 . When Canadian teenager Ryan was six years old, his teacher told him that there was no clear water in many parts of Africa. The teacher said that people often made themselves ill and even died just from drinking or bathing in dirty water.

    1     He decided to raise money for a well(井) so that people in Africa could have clean water. He did extra chores(家务) for his parents and raised $70 all by himself.     2    

Most people would have given up at this point, but not Ryan. He was disappointed. but determined to raise more money.     3     That money was used to dig the first of “Ryan’s wells”

    4     In fact, Ryan has raised over $1,500,000!

Ryan calls himself “a normal boy”.     5     As for the future, he has said that he isn’t exactly sure what he will choose to do. “Maybe a lawyer or a teacher,” he said.

9 . It started 30 years ago with a squirrel(松鼠). A few months after I moved into a new flat, my next-door neighbour, Nicole Figaro, knocked, asking for ___ with a squirrel that got into her flat.   

I drove the squirrel away and made a new friend. Soon Nicole was inviting me over for dinner or ___ home-made food at my door. When I went to my beach house, Nicole helped ___ my mail and water my plants. And when she travelled as a flight attendant(空乘人员), I did the same for her. Wherever she went, she’d ___ to bring me wonderful gifts, but her smile was always the greatest of all.   

In 1997, I had a lovely child and it was Nicole who took care of me and ___. Years later, I gave back the kindness. I helped out when her husband(丈夫) was sick, staying with her and giving her support(支持). More and more, we learnt from and cared for each other.   

___, the pandemic(流行病) hit. My husband was out of work and my son couldn’t be back to Britain because of it. I was ___ about them. Nicole helped my family to prepare for the pandemic and ___ some important things with me. Without her, I couldn’t go through ___ times.

10 . It was a cold and snowy morning after the winter holiday. In fact, it was my first day at my new school. I was walking slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was 7:00 in the morning and there weren’t many people on the road. A girl on a bike passed me quickly. She was riding on ice when suddenly she fell off her bike a few steps(步) in front of me. She was trying hard to get up but fell once more. Without thinking, I went over and helped her stand up. She said, “Thank you,” with a smile and then rode away. The words “Thank you” warmed me and this small thing made me feel less nervous about my new school.

At last, I got to school. The teacher took me to the classroom and asked me to sit down beside a girl. I knew some of the students were looking at me but I was too nervous to look at them. Soon the first class started. It was English. They used a different textbook(课本) from my old school and I didn’t have a copy(复印件). As I was wondering what to do, a book appeared(出现) in front of me. “Let’s share,” the girl next to me said. “And hi, I’m Carrie.” I looked up. It was the girl I helped that morning. What a surprise!

From then on, we became good friends. She was my first and best friend at my new school. Helping her also helped me find a friend.
