5 . Mr. Kent’s students cared much about the hurricane (飓风)in Mexico. They spoke about what it would be like in Mexico. Ava said, “People will need clothes.”
“They’ll need blankets (毯子)to keep warm,” Melanie added.
“I have a new blanket and lots of clothes. We should send those to Mexico,” said Brett.
“That’s wonderful!” said Ava. “Everyone in our school can bring extra clothes and blankets.”
Then the students talked with Mr. Kent about how to collect clothes and blankets. Some kids were going to make signs saying “Blanket Drive”. Everyone would ask their friends and family for old clothes and blankets.
All week long, students brought clothes and blankets to the school gym. News of the Blanket Drive spread. The TV station sent a camera crew (摄制组) to the school. They found Brett and said to him, “This is a great idea. You must be very proud of yourself.”
Brett said, “No. We just have things that people in Mexico need. We’re trying to help. It’s simple.”

Do you ever throw away food at home? Do you know what happens to the food if shops and supermarkets don’t sell it? You might be surprised to find out that over one third of food gets lost or wasted. What’s more, around 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to live a healthy life.
Many people in the UK and across the world are trying to make use of thrown-out food that is perfectly edible(可食用的). For example, there is a restaurant in London using unsold(未出售的) food from supermarkets, including a lot of vegetables, fruit, fish and so on. Cooks turn it into delicious soups and dishes to feed the hungry people. Customers pay what they can afford, or help with the washing up.
Also, last year the UK’s first food waste supermarket opened. Customers pay whatever they want for the food. You can usually find things such as fresh vegetables, fruit and milk there.
“Fuel for School” is another food waste project. Food from supermarkets such as dairy, vegetables, fruit and bread is used to feed hungry school children. Their families may not be able to afford to buy them lunch or snacks.
I think this is an amazing project as food waste is one of the world’s biggest problems. I also believe that the government(政府) should make rules, so that supermarkets don’t throw away so much perfectly good food!

10 . The English people love charity(慈善)shops. If you come to England, you will find many charity shops on almost every street. The first charity shop was open in 1947, two years after the end of the World War II. Now there are about seven thousand charity shops in England and hundreds in London.
Charity shops sell(卖)different things, such as clothes, books, toys, kitchen things, music and computer games. Lots of young people love to buy things in the shops for three reasons(理由). First, it is because things here are usually not too dear. Most of things here are second-hand. So people can buy things with a little money. Young people don’t have much money. The shops can help them make full use of their money. Second, people give their old things to the shops for free. It means there is less waste and so it is good for the environment(环境).
