4 . Indonesia is my mother’s homeland and one of my favorite countries. Since I was young, I had learned a lot about the country and become interested in it. For a long time I had wanted to do something for the country and people there, and I thought volunteering (做志愿者) would be a good and fun way to do so.

I received the greatest pleasure from being with the children. Teaching my first English class in Aceh was exciting, but I was rather nervous. As time passed by, I learned how to be a better teacher. Teaching was actually the most enjoyable of my many responsibilities (责任).

For the children who are more in need, The Education Program (TEP) will collect donations (募捐) to help them.

As a volunteer, I had to visit the TEP children at home once a month and help them write a thank-you letter to their sponsors. This was a way for the children to communicate with their sponsors. 5 . Last year, I was working on a book about penguins (企鹅), and I went on a trip to Antarctica. Antarctica is home to many penguins, so it's a perfect place to take photographs of them. A boat was taking a group of scientists there on a research trip, and there was space for me. I'm not a good sailor, but it was the easiest way to get there.

The night before we left, I couldn't sleep. What if there were storms while we were on the boat? What if I got seasick? I told myself that everything would be OK.

The day we left, the weather was beautiful. The ocean was peaceful, and the sky was blue. But it didn't stay that way for long!

Later that day, a huge storm came. Rain poured down, and the waves were twelve metres high. Our boat was wildly tossed (使上下摇晃). I was very afraid, and then I got seasick.

By the third day, the storm was over. We were in the middle of the ocean, hundreds of kilometres from home. Thick mist hung in the air, and everything was white. It was a strange and lonely sight.

Then we hit pack ice (大块浮冰). The boat had to push its way through the ice. I told myself that the ice meant we were getting close to the penguins.

Our boat was too long to sail to the mainland, so we changed to the Zodiac. The Zodiac didn't look very safe - it was the smallest boat I'd ever seen! But if I wanted to see those penguins, I didn't have any choice.

There were thousands and thousands of penguins. They covered the beach as far as I could see. I took dozens of (几十) photos - some of the best I've ever taken.

Now the book has been published and I'm already planning my next one. I just need to think of an interesting animal that lives a little closer to home.

“Please don’t go,” my father said, “You won’t be happy you know. Sailors have a difficult and dangerous life.” And because I love him, and he was unhappy, I tried to forget about the sea.

But I couldn’t forget, and about a year later, I saw a friend in town. His father had a ship and my friend said to me, “we are sailing to London tomorrow. Why don’t you come with us?”
