文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了严厉的父母对孩子的影响及为了孩子们的健康成长我们应该怎么做。

1 . Thomas is always worried recently. When he wants to play basketball after school, his father says “NO, study should come first.” Every time he turns on the TV after he finishes his homework, his father will shout at him, “Do you have a lot of time? Why not read more books instead of watching TV?” He wants to have a picnic with his father on the weekends, but he knows nothing is more important than study for his father. So Thomas feels sad all the time.

Are you a strict parent? Do you often say NO to your children? A new study found that strict parents may make a child become fat and poor in health.

If the father is very strict while the mother is kind, what will be the result? Is it better for the children? “No, it isn’t.” said Thomas Schofield from a University in the US. “Instead of saying, ‘I’m strict and my wife is the loving mother.’ or something like that, it is better to know that what bad effect (影响) it has to your children.” Schofield said in the paper.

“The best thing we can do is to tell parents not to be too strict with their children. If we want to make sure we’re doing something good for our children’s health, the best and safest way is to love him, care for him and share the growth with him.” Schofield advised.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了冰球运动。

3 . 阅读下列短文,根据短文内容,回答下列问题。

You might know a lot about sports like basketball and football, but do you know anything about ice hockey? Ice hockey is like football because there is a goalkeeper, and each team is trying to get the puck (冰球) into the other team’s goal. But that’s where the similarities (相似点) end.

All the players wear skates (溜冰鞋), big pads (护具) and a helmet (头盔). They each carry a stick (球棍) that they must use to hit the puck into the goal.

This is an action-packed, physical sport and things can get a little rough (粗暴的), kind of like in American football. It’s not uncommon for fights to break out. Ice hockey is very popular in Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the US, but it is getting popular in other countries as well.

You might be surprised to find out that ice hockey is becoming more popular in China. Many kids are joining ice hockey teams. The Beijing Ice Hockey Association (BHA) was created in 2012 and has grown from 80 kids to more than 1,700 since 2016, according to China Daily. Do you want to step onto the ice?

4 . Hello, my friend! Let’s talk about what happiness is. Are you happy? What is happiness? I often think about this question. But some people always laugh at me because they think it is an easy question.

I often ask them, “What is happiness?” Some of them say to me, “You are foolish. The answer to this easy question is to have a lot of money.” When I get this answer, I do not feel glad. Some will ask me “why?” I will say “Well, having a lot of money isn’t a bad thing. Now some people begin to find jobs to make a living. They all want to be the second, the third, the fourth, even the fifth Bill Gates. Maybe they’re millionaires (百万富翁) now, but are they happy? I don’t think so. If they want to be another Bill Gates, they must spend more time on their work and take less care of their families or other things. Though they have a lot of money, I don’t think they have a happy life.

Here is what I think happiness is. If you want to be a person with a lot of happiness, then try to be like this: Be a kind, helpful and friendly person. Well, the more work, the more rewards (回报). Let’s begin to work hard now. Try to be a good person and then you will not feel sorry for yourself when you are old. It’s the greatest happiness for everyone, I think. Working hard is good. But don’t forget your friends or your family after work. Share more time with them and you’ll have more happiness.

How to save a life

The students at No 19 Middle School in Nanning, Guangxi were having a class. Suddenly, a curtain (窗帘) went on fire and the fire spread quickly. Some students were burned.

Not really! This was a fire drill (消防演习) that took place in the school on April 28. After the drill, experts from the Red Cross (红十字会) gave a lesson to 400 students on how to deal with some injuries, such as burns and bleeding (流血).

Every year in China, 1.2 million emergencies take place, according to Xinhua. These lead to at least 200,000 deaths and 1.7 million injuries. Experts say that the ten minutes after an accident are the most important moments for saving a life.

May 8 is World Red Cross Day. Let’s learn the steps for how to save lives.

When there is an accident, remember Dr ABC:

1. Danger – Check the area to see that you are not putting yourself or the hurt person in any more danger. For example, check that there are no loose electrical cables (松弛的电线).

2. Response (反应) – Call out to the hurt person or shake him or her to see if he or she is conscious (有意识的).

3. Airway (通风) – If the hurt person isn’t responding, tip back his or her head and open the mouth. Remove anything that might be blocking the airway.

4. Breathing (呼吸) – Put your ear to the person’s mouth to hear if he or she is breathing, and watch to see if his or her chest is rising and falling. If he or she is breathing, ensure that he or she is in a stable side position.

If he or she is not breathing, give him or her five full breaths in 10 seconds.

5. Circulation (血液循环) – Feel and look at the person to try and judge if his or her circulation has stopped. If he or she is cold, or has turned pale or blue, it is likely that there is no circulation.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了乔戈里峰的地理位置、特征以及登山者。

6 . Chogori (乔戈里峰) stands on the Chinese-Pakistan border. Chogori is from the Tajik language, it means “high, great and magnificent”. Internationally, it is better known as K2. Chogori is about 8,611 meters high, and it is the second highest mountain in the world.

And Chogori is not Qomolangma. On the one hand, Chogori is a steeper (更陡峭的) and more dangerous peak. In fact, it is the most difficult peak to reach in the world. The first two people to reach the top of Chogori—Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni from Italy—did it in 1954. In 1986, the first woman did it too. Since 1954, only 281 people have reached the top, and 49 others have been killed (However, Qomolangma has been reached 3,000 times and only 15 climbers lost their lives). Of all the over 8,000-meter-high peaks, it has the highest death rate.

On the other hand, this great peak is for professional climbers only. Here, no commercial (商业的) climbing organization will provide you with any services, and even top-class climbers will choose their climbing partners with a particularly eagle (鹰) eye. The leader of a Japanese K2 team said when organizing his team in 1982, “We are professional climbers, and all know that if we run into trouble at a height of 8,000 meters on K2, it is impossible to get help. If you do not have the confidence and determination (决心) to face possible trouble, you should not go!”

This is Chogori! In the eyes of the top-class climbers, it is the most beautiful peak, and it is the danger that attracts them.

Show your power by setting a new record

Did you break any records (创下纪录) last week? Nov 14 was Guinness World Records Day. On this day, the Guinness World Records company encourages people around the world to set new records. For example, last year on this day, a boy from Xiamen named Que Jianyu set a record for the fastest time to solve (破解) a Rubik’s cube (魔方) while upside-down. His record time was 15.84 seconds.

Surfing on land in amazing style

When you walk on the city street, you may find such a “creepy” scene: people hold their arms out and swing their bodies around with bent knees. No worries. They’re just a group of surfskaters (陆冲玩家) practicing surfing on land.

Since this summer, surfskating has become popular among all ages in China. It became a trendy topic on many online platforms (平台), such as Xiaohongshu and Sina Weibo. On the short-video platform Douyin, posts hashtagged (话题标签为) “surfskate” had over 150 million views by August, according to China Daily.

“We thought surfskating would be popular someday but we didn’t expect that day would come so soon,” Li Dezhi told China Daily. Li, a supplier for the Chinese market of YOW, a Spanish surfskate brand, started selling YOW boards five years ago. “We think COVID-19 has sped up its popularity because the pandemic affected many outdoor activities like skiing and surfing (冲浪). Surfskating became a fun alternative (替代物).”

“You can see an increasing number of people of almost all ages practicing surfskating in a wide space inside the community I live in, “ said Ma Yuan from Beijing.

Once a surfing fan, Ma started surfskating a few months ago. “I knew about surfskating from social media and decided to give it a try. It was easier than I thought,” said Ma.

“Besides, surfskating needs a lot less equipment (装备) compared with many other sports. I can start skating at a random (任意的) place and all I need is a board.”

Ma joined a WeChat group set up by other surfskate lovers. “It could be very helpful in learning and socializing (社交), as the group organizer often talks about gatherings (聚会). We also invite people we like to hang out with. I really enjoy the community atmosphere (氛围).”

Together while apart

As the novel coronavirus pandemic continues and people are stuck inside, one video game is giving players a unique (特别的) way to stay social at home.

Animal Crossing, a video game released by Nintendo, has been described as a “social simulation (模拟) video game,” according to CNET. In the game, players live in a village with animals that they can talk to. Players don’t “win” or “lose” – they simply do relaxing activities such as fishing, hunting bugs (虫子), and gardening.

But the game’s social aspect (方面) is what makes it so popular these days. Players can invite their real-world friends into the game to do activities together. For example, they can hold parties, visit museums, or create works of art. One real-life couple even held an in-game “wedding” after their real-world wedding had to be canceled (取消) due to the outbreak.

Being able to relax and socialize through a simple game has made a big difference to many. During the recent Easter holiday, most people were unable to get together in real life to celebrate. So instead, they celebrated online, hunting for eggs in games like Animal Crossing.

“Given everything that’s going on, it has made a huge difference to my mental health. Instead of hanging outside, I’m Googling (上网搜索) the best ways to breed (繁育) hybrid (杂交) flowers on my Animal Crossing island,” Steph Panecasio wrote for CNET.
