文章大意:本文主要介绍了食物浪费是当今社会一个很大的问题,劳拉开发了一个应用可以帮助解决这个问题。
1 .

According to a recent research, more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food goes to waste in Laura’s country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply. It is a sad fact, especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.

Every day when Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to donate uneaten food to homeless shelters in her community. In the past three years, projects of the same kind have spread to other schools and even out-school areas—some of the fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Find & Feed. It has already fed thousands of people in her city.

How does it work? Through an app, Find & Feed matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants, that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project then picks it up and takes it to a shelter nearby. Pretty cool, right?

It’s not surprising that people in other cities have contacted Laura, hoping that she could have developed similar projects for their communities.

Some people, however, have worries about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need.

5 .

Most of us learn how to ride a bike when we were kids. But as we grow older, many of us stop riding and put away those once-beloved bikes somewhere. Years later, when we get on the bikes, we can still ride very well, just like we never stopped biking.

It’s surprising, right? Our memories let us down at many other moments, such as remembering the name of a person who we once knew. So why can we ride a bike when we haven’t practised for so many years? There are two kinds of long-time memories in our brains: declarative and procedural.

Declarative memories is the memory about facts and experience. It includes things like remembering difficult words and long phone number. Its extraction often need the help of consciousness. Take this for an example, when being asked about your travelling experiences of the last summer vacation, you need to put in a lot of mental effort to recall the details of the trip.

Declarative memory is what schools try to teach students. It’s easy to put it into words. Also, it’s natural to forget it without practicing from time to time. Scientists make good use of them when doing researches.

Procedural memory, on the other hand, is about how to perform skills. It’s mostly unconscious—that is, we can do   it without putting in much attention. Playing the piano and swimming are both examples of it. When we perform a skill over and over again, it becomes part of us.

Procedural memory, different from declarative memory, is often difficult to explain. If someone asked you how you drive a car, you might not be able to say it clearly and completely. However, if they asked you about the way to your house, you would probably be able to say it out quickly and easily.

1. Why does the writer mention bike riding in Paragraph 1?
A.To show the topic about memories.B.To give advice on memory problems.
C.To tell us the importance of memories.D.To describe the advantages of memories.
2. What does the underlined word “consciousness” probably mean in the passage?
A.Good habits.B.Lots of busy time.

4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The Kinds of MemoryB.The Memory about Facts

9 .

Have you ever realized that you’re dreaming in the middle of a dream? If this happens during a night mare, you can wake yourself up. If it happens during a common dream, you can decide what to dream about next. Want to fly? Go right ahead! People call this type of experience a lucid dream.

Some people have lucid dreams naturally, while others need to practise. The key to lucid dreaming is realizing that you are in a dream. To do that, most people need a “reality check”. One way of checking is to look at a clock or words on a page, look away, and then look back again. In a dream, words and numbers are often unclear, or change completely.

A lot of lucid dreaming devices promise an easy way to lucid dreams. These devices play sounds or shine red lights as reality checks. If these sounds or red lights appear in the dream, the user may realize, “Hey, I’m dreaming!”

Unluckily, a scientific report of lucid dreaming devices found that none of them were reliable. For example, the Remee lucid dreaming mask was popular on Kickstarter when it came out in 2012. But many people complained that it didn’t work. They didn’t have lucid dreams, and didn’t remember seeing any red lights. Another device, the $299 Aurora headband, which can record brain-waves as well as body movements, also made people unsatisfied.

What do you think? Have you ever had a lucid dream? Would you want to try a lucid dreaming device? Or are these devices just a lie?

1. What type of experience can be called a lucid dream?
A.Dream about keeping flying in the sky.B.Decide what to dream about in a dream.
C.Realize you had a dream after waking up.D.Have an unpleasant dream during the night.
2. According the passage, which picture is one way of checking the reality?

A.Most people need to practise hard to have lucid dreams.
B.Sounds and red lights are sure to appear in lucid dreams.
C.Reality check helps people know if they are in lucid dreams.
D.Remee lucid dreaming mask was popular because it worked well.
4. The underlined word “reliable” probably means ________.
A.safeB.cheapC.usefulD.popular
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Some good suggestions on having lucid dreams.
B.Different kinds of reality check for lucid dreams.
C.The introduction of lucid dreams and the devices.
