1 . Climate change is dangerous for bird habitats (栖息地). Poyang Lake in Jiangxi province, an important habitat for the critically endangered Siberian crane, has experienced unusual changes in recent years.
“In some years, the lake experiences floods, while in others, it experiences droughts. Both Of these situations create food shortages in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a professor from the National Bird Banding Center of China, told China Daily.
To solve such habitat problems, China has recently recognized 1,140 sites as important breeding (繁殖) and wintering grounds, and migratory (迁徙的) stops, with most of them located in wetlands.
Wetlands include coastal areas with a water depth of no more than 6 meters at low tide. As the “kidneys of Earth” and “species gene pools”, wetlands hold clean water, stop floods and prevent droughts.
To protect China’s wetlands, a law was introduced in 2022 to check human activities at important national wetlands and ban harmful activities.
Since these actions, more birds have been seen wintering in the nation’s wetlands, including some new rare species (稀有物种). Black-faced spoonbills (黑翅长脚鹬), a rare and endangered species, were seen at Dongting Lake in Hunan province for the first time in five years. The number of spoonbills has increased from 300 in the 1980s to more than 5,000 in 2023, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

2 . Most people nowadays wear sneakers (跑鞋), leather (皮) shoes or boots. But in ancient China, many people made their own cloth shoes.
Tangchang, a town in Sichuan province with 700 years of shoemaking history, is known for its cloth shoes.
“Tangchang cloth shoes are easy to walk in, and they don’t get damp (潮湿的) easily,” Xinhua noted.
Tangchang cloth shoes were popular in China until the1980s. According to China Daily, there were five Tangchang cloth shoe factories in Chengdu alone. In 2018, Tangchang cloth shoes were added to Sichuan’s intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) list.
But making cloth shoes is not easy. Growing up in Tangchang, Lai Shufang, 63, is a master of making cloth shoes and has been making them for over 40 years. The job is very demanding (费力的) and over time sneakers became more popular with customers. Many factories producing Tangchang cloth shoes were shut down. The last, where Lai worked, shut down in 1998.
To make a living and help the cultural heritage survive, however, Lai and her co-workers continued to make cloth shoes and sold them in her store.
Ai Peng, Lai’s son, also helps and adds Shu embroidery (蜀绣) to the shoes. They now sell about 10,000 pairs of shoes each year.

3 . Recently, many people think it’s risky to use credit (信用) card numbers online. However, from time to time, we all use passwords and ID numbers on the Internet. We think we are safe, but that may not be true! A new kind of attack (攻击) is being used by dishonest people to steal IDs and credit card numbers from web surfers. This new kind of attack is called “phishing”.
Phishing sounds the same as the word “fishing”, and it means that a thief is trying to trick people into giving away valuable information. Like real fishermen, phishers use bait (诱饵) in the form of great online deals or services. For example, phishers might use false emails and website s to trick people into revealing (透露) credit card numbers, account usernames, and passwords. They imitate (模仿) well-known banks, online sellers, and credit card companies. Successful phishers may make as many as 5% of the people believe and give away their personal information.
It’s really a big problem! Actually, tricking 5% of the online population is huge. Now more than 4.6 billion people have access (进入权) to the Internet, and 75% of those Internet users live in the wealthiest countries on Earth. It has been reported that phishers send more than 40 billion false messages each year. Even by tricking only. 5% of the people, phishers can make a lot of money.
Amy, 18, from California, received an email. A man told Amy that she could get a million dollars in her account as a reward if she sent a thousand dollars to him. Amy did as the man said at once. The “thief” used Amy’s Social Security number to get credit cards in her name and transferred her money.
How can people avoid being cheated online? Above all, they have to learn to recognize the email that has been sent by a phisher. Always be careful with any email with urgent (紧急的) requests for personal information. Phishers typically write upsetting or exciting, but false statements in their emails so that people will reply right away. Never give out personal information to phishers. And if an offer sounds too good to be true, it is.

Everybody knows that the first impression (印象) is very important. If you want to be better at meeting new people, just follow these tips.
Firstly, live in the moment. If you want to meet new people, the first thing you have to do is not to worry about how you perform and to enjoy the present moment of the new conversation. When you meet a new person, don’t ask yourself, “How do I look?” or “How do I sound?” Instead, ask, “What would this person like to talk about?” or “What matters to this person?” You can keep the conversation by thinking about what to say next.
Secondly, stay confident. If you keep up your confidence, other people will like talking to you. You should be confident before you walk into a room with new people in it and build your confidence as the conversation goes along. Just smile, talk about the things that you love. Body language can help you stay confident. Stand tall and don’t look at the floor. When you introduce yourself, speak clearly and loudly enough that you’ll be heard.
At last, master the art of small talk. Small talk is what helps you get to know people and open up to having a more serious conversation and a more personal relationship. Talking about the weather or what classes you’re taking can lead to a more serious discussion about your favorite interests, or your favorite memories from a certain time of year. Ask the person some basic questions like what classes he or she is taking, if he or she has any pets, or ask anything about his or her summer vacation or plans.

If you want to do a school project on children’s rights (权利), you can look on the Internet for some information.
The United Nations lists the rights of children. Most countries agree all of them, but some countries do not.
◆Children have the right to be properly fed, clothed and sheltered (庇护) by their family. If their family can’t do so, the government should take responsibility.
◆Children have the right to an education and medical care.
◆Children must not be cruelly punished by their parents or any others.
◆Children have the right to expect the government to protect them from all kinds of abuse (虐待) and neglect (忽略).
◆
◆Children have the right to be protected from being made to work too hard to make money for other people.
In some countries children do not have these rights. Many young children are made to work long hours in factories and on farms. In some countries there are so few schools that only rich children get an education.
The rights of children are, therefore, the rights people think children should have. They are not always the rights children really have.
A.Children mustn’t fight at school. |
B.They should be provided by the government. |
C.No child under fifteen should be made to fight in an army. |
D.The following are some of the most important rights of children. |
E.There are not enough doctors or nurses to help many children when they are sick. |
F.A United Nations website can show you plenty of useful information for the project. |
6 . Alice just had a good time at Chimelong Ocean World. Jenny did well on last month’s English test and her mom bought her a new smartwatch. And now, Lucy is playing with her cute puppy. On social media (社交媒体), everyone seems to be happy all the time.
But can that be true in real life? The answer to this question is no. As a teenager, you haven’t had much life experience. Sometimes, you might have very high hopes. For example, you wanted to get an A+ on an exam. It didn’t happen, and you felt sad. Sadness is not always bad. It can push you to do better next time.
But it’s a different story if your sadness is starting to influence your daily life. Maybe you don’t want to go to school in the morning. Or you don’t feel like going out with your friends. If you feel like that, you may be falling into depression.
I felt this way when my dog, Rebel, died. He was always by my side. Every morning, he followed me to school. Now, he was gone, and I didn’t want to do anything. My parents said I was having unrealistic hopes. Dogs don’t live forever. Rebel had a good life. He probably wanted me to have a good life, too.
Depression is not a sign of being weak. Instead, it’s a part of who we are. Many people, like comedian Jim Carry, have experienced depression. When you feel depressed, you must not shut yourself away from the world. Share your feelings with a good friend. Eat something delicious and take a walk in the park. Ask for any help you need. You’re not alone in the battle against this terrible feeling!

Some parents complain that their children’s teachers are giving students homework on phones. It means they have to offer their children phones or can’t refuse their children’s request to use their phones. Some parents say children don’t usually finish their homework in time on phones. Instead, they spend much time on online games, WeChat Moments and TikTok. They even use phones to cheat in the exams. Parents are worried about that. Now things have changed much this term.
“Primary and high school students will not be allowed to bring phones to schools,” announced the Ministry of Education of China on Monday.
According to the notice, primary and high school students are required not to bring their phones into schools. If they do need to bring phones to schools, they have to ask their parents if they can first and come to schools with a written request from their parents.
The notice said that if the students bring their phones to schools, they have to hand their phones to teachers when they arrive. The phones will be kept together by the teachers. And they should not be allowed into classrooms.
There are some main points in the notice. Teachers are not allowed to give students homework on phones, and they are not allowed to ask students to finish their homework on phones, either.
For communication between parents and students, schools should set up public phones and teacher hotlines, it added.
The notice is to protect students’ eyes, make sure they put their hearts into study and prevent them losing themselves in online games.

8 . Every year, Time magazine puts out its list of the year’s best inventions. Some of them help us solve problems, while others make life easier or more fun. Here are three of the inventions on this year’s list, which one do you think is the best?
Life-like AnimalsAt the Hologram Zoo (全息动物园) in Australia, you don’t just see a giraffe. You see a group of giraffes running towards you and then over you. “We show people things they have never seen before,” says the zoo’s CEO. Visitors to the zoo can see life-like wonders. Thanks to hologram technology, the public can see wildlife which don’t need to be kept in cages.
Stopping FiresAlert California is a safety program in California that is a state of America. It uses AI to predict wildfires. The AI detector (探测器) uses more than a thousand cameras in forests across the state. It can spot smoke and other early signs of fire. In two months, the program correctly predicted 77 fires before any 911 calls came in.
Air on MarsIf astronauts land on Mars in the future, they’ll need air to breathe and a way to get home. NASA’s Moxie can help solve both problems. This small equipment can separate oxygen (气) from the atmosphere (大气) on Mars and help astronauts breathe. In addition, the oxygen can be used to provide energy for spaceships. This is important for sending astronauts home from Mars.

Energy is the ability to do work. Solar energy (太阳能) comes from the Sun. There is also energy that comes from wind and water.
But do you know that energy can come from people, too? When you pedal (踩踏板) a bike, you produce energy. You use your legs to push the pedals. Your energy is transferred (转移) to the bike. That makes the bike move.
Now imagine riding your bike to create enough power to run a computer. Some students at one school did just that! They jumped on bikes connected to generators (发电机) and pedaled in place. Soon they were producing electricity. This energy is needed to run their computers.
Here is how bicycle-powered energy works. When a student pedals the bike, the back wheel spins. The wheel spins the generator. The generator produces electricity. As long as a student pedals the bicycle, electricity moves through the generator. The electricity can be used right away. This energy can also be stored(存储)and used later.
People use bicycle-powered energy to run small devices (设备) such as small televisions and fans. They often use less than 100 watts (瓦特) per hour. However, it would be a mistake to use pedal power to run a fridge. This large machine often uses more than 700 watts per hour. The electricity for these machines comes from power lines overhead or underground.
Pedal power can be seen in schools, gyms, and homes. What a fun way to provide electricity!
1. How does the writer lead into the topic “bicycle-powered energy” in Paragraph 2?A.By asking a question. | B.By telling a joke. |

10 . There’s nothing quite like falling sound asleep after a full day of work. Like people, animals need to rest after working hard. Some animals sleep in water. Others dig holes under the ground. Some even sleep high in trees or under leaves. But they all find a way to rest.
Some animals in the sea sleep in strange ways. Fish sleep with their eyes open. They seem to look ahead far into the sea while they rest. Sea otters sometimes sleep in beds of the plants that grow in the sea. This keeps them from moving away. Parrot fish blow something from their mouths when they are ready to sleep. Then a bubble (气泡) will be formed around them. The bubble protects them from harm while they sleep.
Some animals sleep under the ground. Chipmunks (花栗鼠) sleep curled up (蜷缩) in a ball. Their beds are made of leaves and grass. In winter, they sleep for two weeks and wake up to eat the stored food. Then they go back to sleep for another two weeks before waking up again. Some desert frogs dig underground holes during the hot, dry season. A frog may stay in its hole for months.
High above the ground, monkeys find leafy places in trees each evening before they sleep. The tall trees help to keep monkeys safe during the night. Some insects even sleep under the leaf that will be their next meal. A bee may climb down into a flower to rest. When it climbs out the next morning, it is rested and ready for work.
