In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join “Environment Clubs”. In an environment club, people work together to protect the environment.
No-rubbish lunches. How much do you throw after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be recycled. The students try their best to make less rubbish.
No-car day. No-car day was first started by 34 cities in France on September 22nd, 1995. It was started to protect the environment. By now, more than 1,000 cities around the world have had a no-car day. In China, more and more people are taking part in the activity. The slogan for no-car day is, “If we drive for one less day, we can have one more nice day.” On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car—not the students and not the teachers!
Cars give pollution to our air, so remember: Walk, jump, bike or run! Use your legs! It’s lots of fun!
Turn off water! Do you know that some toilets could waste twenty to forty ml of water an hour? In a year, that will fill a small river! In the environment club, the members mend those broken toilets.
We have only one earth. Let’s work hard together to make our world cleaner and more beautiful.
1. What do the Environment Clubs ask students to do?2. How many cities around the world have had a no-car day so far?
3. Why do the club members mend the toilet?
4. What can we do to protect the environment? Share your ideas. Write 30 words or more.
2 . Do you know how to be street smarts? Being street smarts means knowing how to keep yourself safe from strangers when you’re alone or with other kids. Whether you’re walking to the school or to the bus, hanging out in the playground, or riding your bike in your neighborhood, being street smarts helps you stay safe.
When you’re walking home from school, a person in a car stops and asks you for directions. At the park, someone says he needs you to help look for his lost dog. These people may seem friendly, but they’re strangers.
If a stranger approaches (靠近) you and asks for help, don’t help.
If a stranger stops his/her car and offers you ride, don’t get in. It’s also important to avoid a stranger’s car completely.
Kids need to follow the rules of street smarts all the time with every stranger, even if the situation seems fine. No one will think that you are silly.
A.All strangers are friendly. |
B.Don’t even give an answer. |
C.Most strangers aren’t dangerous and wouldn’t do anything to hurt kids. |
D.Even if the stranger knows your name, don’t be fooled. |
E.If a stranger asks you to look in the car, don’t do it. |
3 . Do you like to travel alone? Or do you think it’s better to travel with friends? If you’re still deciding, please read on. I will explain the advantages of both ways.
One of the great things about traveling alone is that you make the rules about where you go and what you eat. You’ll be surprised at what you discover about yourself without any influence.
Traveling alone really shows you what you’re made of and helps you to discover inner strength (内心的力量) you didn’t know you had. Besides, it also gives you time to think, learn and grow. When your eyes are wide open, you’ll get a whole new outlook on the world.
It’s easy to think that traveling alone is lonely. Although that may sometimes be true, you’re hardly ever alone. When you travel in a one-person team, this can provide a chance for you to enjoy the most interesting part of travel—communicating with the locals and meeting travelers from all corners of the world.
In fact, traveling to know more about the world is not easy. There’s research to be done, flights to be booked and choices to be made, not to mention that things can—and often do—go wrong. One of the main advantages of traveling with friends is being able to share these things and support each other through the process, even if it’s just someone who will wait with your bag when you go to the bathroom.
Just as your mother always says, it’s true that traveling with others can give you a sense of safety, especially if you’re new to travel. You know that if you get lost or have your wallet stolen, there’s someone to hold your hand when you try to explain your situation in a foreign police station.
There’s no right or wrong way to travel. Whether you travel alone or team up with friends, it depends on you.

4 . Today, people travel around the world by air and enjoy the great convenience it brings, but studies show that air travel is bad for the environment. It’s responsible for about three percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (排放物). Then do we have to give up flying to save the planet? Maybe not.
Last month, a British airline (航空公司) operated a flight (航班) called Flight 100. It flew from London to New York with some reporters, engineers and government officers on it. There were no paying passengers. The flight was special because the plane used waste fats and plant sugars as fuel (燃料). As a new kind of green fuel, it was different from the traditional fuel and it cut the flight’s pollution by 70 percent according to the company. Some people said that the flight meant a lot. Many more people wanted to have a try on the flight.
However, there are still problems. For one thing, the green fuel costs five times as much as the traditional fuel. For another, it is difficult to make enough green fuel for all the flights around the world in a short time. To provide enough fuel for a large number of planes, farmers will have to grow more plants. Therefore, more forests will be cut down for farmland.
For now, the British airline and other airlines have no plan to provide similar flights for the public. There is still a long way to go before air travel becomes greener. But one day in the future, such flights may become common and the greenhouse gas emissions may be reduced.

5 . Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them. For example, there are 350 types of sharks and all of them are meat eaters. Some sharks are very big. The whale shark is 50 to 60 feet long. But some sharks are very small. The dwarf (侏儒) shark is only 6 inches (英寸) long.
Sharks are 100 million years old. In fact, they lived at the same time as dinosaurs. Today sharks live in every ocean on the earth, but most sharks live in warm water. They keep the oceans clean because they eat sick fish and animals.
Most sharks have four to six rows of teeth. When a shark’s tooth falls out, another tooth moves in from behind. Sharks do not have ears. However, they “hear” sounds and movements in the water. Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate. This helps sharks find food. Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too. Most sharks see best in low light. They often hunt for food at dawn (黄昏), in the evening or in the middle of the night.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons. For example, cancer is common in many animals, including people. However, it is rare (罕见的) in sharks.. Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer. Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer too.

6 . International Volunteer Day is on December 5 every year. It started on December 17, 1985. It’s a day to honor volunteers all over the world.
Every day and every minute, volunteers around the world work out of their own kindness and make the world a better place. They protect the environment, build schools, care for animals. Most volunteers work without getting paid, and many do so using their own money. International Volunteer Day offers us a chance to do so.
Celebrating International Volunteer Day also lets more people know about the work and encourages them to join the volunteer team. When people see how volunteering is changing things for the better, they may want to donate (拼赠) their time and play their part.
Doing volunteer work is also meaningful.Volunteering is a good way to open our eyes. We may do something we never do and meet different kinds of people. We can talk with them and get their good ideas. Volunteers especially students can learn much from practice, get some experience and know how to solve problems.

The weather is getting hotter. You are thirsty after playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful of what you are drinking. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health.
There are plenty of “energy drinks” on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great! But after a careful check, you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.
Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited (限制) its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. Just one box of energy drink may make you nervous. Scientists say that teenagers should be discouraged from taking drinks with a lot of caffeine in them.

The number of falcons is rising now.
One unusual thing about falcons is that they like to make their nests (巢) in high places. In nature, they often nest on mountain tops and on the sides of cliffs (悬崖). Falcons have also got used to life in cities. They nest on tall buildings and bridges in cities. The height of these nests is from 50 to 200 feet in the air.
They also like to return to the same nesting place every year. Both the mother and father falcons help to raise the babies. The mother stays more time in the nest. The father hunts and brings back food for her and the babies.
Many people all around the country work very hard to help falcons live to adulthood. There are even video cameras fixed up in many places. This way, people can make sure the birds and their eggs stay protected. Falcons are lucky to have so many people who keep an eye on them.

It might be fun to use your smartphone. But be careful that too much screen time may be harmful to your health.
First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light that the screen gives out. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause eye strain, headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15 minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.
Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can influence how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains, which is a key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.
Third, using screens too much will influence your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronics before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronics at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smartphones, TVs and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.
To keep healthy, doctors and researchers strongly advise that you shouldn’t use screens for long hours.
1. What can the blue light from your screen cause?2. How often should you take a break when working at a computer or using a smartphone?
3. How can parents prevent levels of white matter getting lower in their children’s brains?
4. Do you think smartphones are important? Why do you think so? Write 30 words or more.
