1 . Do you know the reason why we feel tired in the middle of a class? Maybe you would say it is because the teacher’s class is boring.
Purpose of sleep.
Sleep time.
Enough sleep is important to us. How much sleep do we need? New-born babies sleep most of the time. They can sleep 20—22 hours a day. Children need 10—12 hours of sleep a day. Teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep a day because they need lots of energy to grow into their adult (成人的) bodies. Grown-ups usually need 6-8 hours of sleep to keep active.
Interesting facts.
Almost everyone has their dreams while they sleep, but not all of them can tell their dreams clearly when they wake up.
It’s not just people that love to snooze (打盹). In fact, many animals have unusual or surprising sleeping habits. Some animals, such as bears and hedgehogs, sleep all through winter. The swift is a very fast bird that can sleep while it flies! Cute koalas sleep around 18 hours a day. Giraffes don’t need much sleep at all. They usually sleep standing up.

World Sleep Day fell on March 21 this year. And the theme was “Sleep equality for all people’s health”.
Chinese people sleep less than 7 hours every night, according to the result reported by the Chinese Sleep Research Society. Also, many Chinese people can’t sleep well.
What should we do? First, try to use an alarm with softer and lower sounds because it is never fun for people to be woken up by a ringing alarm. Second, sleep early and get up early. Some young people may go to bed late at 2 am and get up at 10 am. They think that as long as they have 8 hours of sleep, everything will be fine. But in fact, our bodies can tell time. They use light and temperature to do so. If we wake up too late, our bodies might feel stuck (困于) between sleep and being awake. That’s why we sometimes feel even more tired after oversleeping. So go to bed early and get up early. This is good for our health.

GreenIn most cultures, green represents (代表) nature and is a calm color. However, in modern Chinese culture, green has a negative meaning. For example, when you say “His face looks green.”, it means he doesn’t look well. When you say someone is wearing a green hat, it mans the person’s partner is cheating on him or her.
YellowIn ancient China, yellow represented power. Only the emperor could wear this color. Yellow was also considered as a natural color. The Yellow River, the second longest river in China, got its name from he yellowish soil (土壤) in it. Now, when yellow is used in a sentence, it mans someone fails and that something doesn’t go as planed. For example, when you ask people how their relationship is going, they might say “huáng le”, which means they’ve broken up.

6 . Our brain is the most important part in our body. It helps us to think, speak, feel, and move. It’s no wonder we need to look after it and just like the rest of our body. We need to keep it exercised to keep it healthy.
Our brain is made up of 86 billion neurons—or nerve cells (神经元), but as we age, some of these gradually die off. In serious situations, nerve cells in different areas of the brain become hurt and finally die, leading to a condition called dementia (痴呆), which influences a person’s ability to think properly.
It’s a good idea to train our brain by learning ways to increase our memory and intelligence. For example, solving crossword puzzles (字迹) can be really helpful. Dr Catherine Loveday, who’s a neuropsychologist, thinks learning a second language is also great for the brain, as it requires us to switch (切换) between languages, making our brain stronger.
However, if you don’t speak another language, there are still ways to train your brain. If you’re right-handed, try performing tasks like brushing your teeth with your left hand to improve your brain.
The main reason we do these exercises is to keep our brain active. It can help to develop additional abilities to help protect the brain against the loss of memory or thinking. Dr Catherine Loveday, says, “Even if people take up languages or other activities later in life, it will provide them with a degree of protection.” As an old saying goes, “It’s never too old to learn.”
According to a study, people are surprised to know about that eating chocolate might increase our ability to get and use knowledge. It could improve how you learn and use information. Although it might not be good for the rest of your body, at least it could make you a brain box!

7 . Have you ever wondered what animals are thinking when you see them? Do you feel happy when you see a cute dog, but do they feel the same way? It’s hard to tell what animals are thinking because they have no ability to speak like us.
Humans have many different feelings, but it’s difficult to understand what animals are feeling. We might think we know our pets the best because we spend a lot of time with them. Some people have dogs as pets because they are friendly to us, even love us. But love could just be a human feeling. Professor Kim Bard did an experiment to test pets’ feelings. It turns out that some dogs show the same feeling when their owner pretends (假装) to cry, but not with strangers. However, it’s harder for cats to work out.
Other animals, like giraffes and whales, also experience great sadness when someone in their group dies. Nowadays, people are starting to consider their well-being more. In the UK, new legislation (立法) means all animals will be considered in law as sentient living things, even tiny insects. Research shows they can feel a degree of feelings, such as being happy, sad, angry, or frightened.
Dr Barbara J King says, “If we understand how deeply animals can feel feelings, do we really need zoos around the world? This is a question.” Understanding animal feelings is important because it helps us treat them in a proper way.

The South Pole is part of a large, frozen continent (大陆). It is very cold and quiet. Ice and snow are everywhere. It is almost all white. There is not much color. There are no trees, no grass, no gardens, no roads and no shops. There are a number of large research stations for scientists there. Some of them are far apart from each other and each stands alone on the white ice.
The scientists work for a long time every day. In the summer months, there is no change from light to dark. It is light all the time. It is hard to know when it is day or night.
They have to dress up warmly to go outside. It is cold and dangerous. They have to check that the ice does not crack under their feet. They have to make sure they do not fall down any of the big holes in the ice. They have to make sure they do not get lost.
The winter months are very cold and dangerous. It is dark all the time. The winds blow strongly. Snow is picked up and blown around. The scientists often cannot see where they are going. They have to work inside the research station too.
The scientists study nature to understand more about our world. They learn more about the gases in the air. They find out how the weather changes over the years. They look at the ice and how it moves. The scientists also study the stars and space. All this helps us prepare for the future.
No planes can reach them to bring food and medicines. They have to make sure that they have enough food to last the winter months. It is a very difficult time. It is cold. It is boring. It is all so white. The scientists do important work in this wild and dangerous place. They live and work on the ice.

10 . China has completed its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, or BDS, becoming another one in the world with a global navigation network (导航网络), the other three being GPS of the US, GLONASS of Russia and Galileo of the European Union.
As the name suggests, the global navigation satellite system provides navigation and location services 24 hours a day. From what we have known so far, building a good satellite system costs a lot. Besides, the other systems have been set up. Why does China have a new one if there is nothing special?
The other three systems have 24 satellites in MEO (中轨道). In addition to the 24 satellites, China’s new global navigation satellite system BeiDou-3 also has three satellites in GEO (地球静止同步轨道) and three in IGSO (倾斜地球同步轨道). What’s special about these six satellites is that they have a relatively fixed area of activity. This can improve BDS’ accuracy (精准度) in China and the Asia-Pacific region to 5 meters, compared with a 10-meter accuracy in other areas.
BDS has another advantage the short message service. It allows users to have a two-way communication. In areas not covered by communication signals, BDS can make the short message service available in uninhabited areas, such as deserts, forests, mountainous and polar areas. With this service, users who are in danger can tell the rescue team (救援队) their location and condition.
As the most populous country in the world, it’s important for China to have its own global navigation satellite system to meet the needs of the country’s development.
In fact, BDS is also good business. According to the official report, China’s satellite industry has kept a 20% annual growth since 2012. And BDS contributes about 80% of it. In addition, BDS has also created countless high-paying jobs. And with continuous improvement, it will have much more to offer in the future.
