文章大意:本文主要讲述了Jules Verne的小说《80天环游世界》的灵感来源和主要内容。

2 . Jules Verne’s novel, Around the World in 80 Days, has inspired many people to travel around the world in unusual ways. It has also inspired several films, TV series, theater productions and even a board game.

So where did Jules Verne get the idea from? Jules Verne told a reporter that he had been sitting in a café in Paris one day when he saw a newspaper advertisement for the first ever tourist trip around the world in 1872.

In Jules Verne’s story, a wealthy English gentleman, Phileas Fogg, accepts a bet (打赌) of £20, 000 that he can travel round the world in 80 days. Phileas Fogg is a man who is very hard to please. For example, he makes his servant leave because he brings him some water to wash in that is 29℃ instead of 30℃. He has a very strict routine (惯例) and he follows it to the letter every day.

Fogg employs (雇佣) a new servant, Passepartout, and on Wednesday, 2nd October, 1872, they set off on the journey round the world. While he’s in India, Fogg falls in love with an Indian girl, Aouda. The journey ends back in London with Fogg believing that he has arrived a day too late and that he has lost the bet. He tells Aouda that he cannot marry her now, as he’s too poor. Passepartout learns that they have got the date wrong. The party travelled eastward, so they gained a day. Fogg hurries to his club and arrives there in time to win the bet and the story ends happily.

The story is an easy read. The humorous twists (转折) and turns of the plot keep you interested throughout. It is a romantic adventure story that I would strongly recommend to all my friends.

B.He follows a routine written down in a letter.

D.His new servant asks for less money.
4. Why can’t Phileas Fogg marry Aouda?
A.He has fallen in love with another girl.
B.He is already married.

3 . Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Dishonesty often helps them survive (生存).

Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. A bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe.

Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries (埋) its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays also steal food. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them. So they get back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.

Chimpanzees can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner’s hand and start fighting again. When chimpanzees find food that they love, such as bananas, it’s natural for them to cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running. But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimpanzees don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share the food.

1. Why does the plover pretend to be hurt?
A.To protect its nest.B.To show its friendliness.
C.To save its young.D.To catch the enemy.
2. What do clever scrub jays do with their food?
A.They bury the food deep.B.They bury the food twice.

3. What will the chimpanzee probably do after crying softly?
A.It will eat all the food it finds.B.It will share the food with others.
C.It will fight again with the winner.D.It will make friends with others.
4. According to Paragraph 4, in which picture can we find a “sneaky” animal?
A.B.C.D.

7 . Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.

Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you’re travelling in Thailand, never touch people’s heads or point your feet at people.

In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space. Also, it’s rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.

When you’re travelling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don’t forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family’s home, don’t admire anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a present.

With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home!

文章大意:本文主要介绍了现在社区食堂变得越来越受欢迎。

8 . Recently, community canteens (社区食堂) have become popular among young people. At first, community canteens mostly served old people. As the elderly may face challenges in cooking, and many young people cannot cook, these canteens have become perfect places for the two generations (一代人) to become meal friends. They can have lunch and dinner within a 10-minute walk, or the community workers can bring the dishes to them.

For only 20 yuan, Fang Wenjing could buy her lunch at a community canteen, which included a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice. “The dishes have a home-cooked taste, just as I expected. The canteen is also clean,” said Fang.

Now the number of young people who’d like to eat in community canteens increases rapidly. Almost 70 percent of its customers are young people. This also encourages community canteens to think of creative ways to provide food and make things easier for people. A canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community brings out buffet-style (自助模式) dishes. The dishes are sold at 2.48 yuan per 100 grams. This price is lower than the restaurant nearby. A canteen at the Zhanongkou Community in Zhejiang province recently introduced “blind box”. They cost just 6 yuan but have one meat dish and a vegetarian dish. To keep what’s inside each box a surprise, stickers (贴纸) are placed over the see-through top to cover the “main dish”. The “blind boxes” often sell out very quickly.

The rise of community canteens is impossible without the efforts of local governments. The government provides support for these canteens, either by providing free space or reducing water and electricity costs. There are now more than 6,700 community canteens in China. And many cities are responding to the call to build service canteens in their communities.

1. Why are community canteens popular according to paragraph 1?
A.Because they are cheap.
B.Because they are convenient.
C.Because they are healthy.
D.Because they are delicious.
2. How does Fang Wenjing like the food in the community canteen?
A.Tasty.B.Sweet.C.Crispy.D.Clean.

B.It is not popular among young people.
C.We can know the main dish through the top of the box.
D.Pay six yuan for it, one meat dish and a vegetarian dish will be served.
4. What does the passage tell us about community canteens?
A.Community canteens are no longer only used by the elderly.
B.Young people like to go to community canteens because of their creative activities.
C.Without government’s help, community canteens can also become popular.
D.Either young people like to go to restaurants or elderly people like to go to restaurants.
5. How does the writer feel about the development of community canteens according to the last paragraph?
A.Doubtful.B.Excited.C.Worried.D.Positive.

文章大意:本文主要以作者在农村生活学会的生活技能为例,谈论在学校开展劳动教育的意义。

9 .

I learned to cook at around 12 years old. The first skill I learned was making dough (面团). In my hometown of Ningxia, people make noodles in the evening. Since my parents often came home late, a prepared dough would help my family have supper sooner. I thought it would be easy because I often saw my mom do it—just mix water and flour (面粉), right? Not quite! It turned out to be a mess for a while. First I made the dough too soft. Then I made it too hard. But as I kept trying, I finally made it. I fell in love with cooking. It’s a good way to relax. More importantly, the cooking skill helps me live better when I was alone. I can meal myself instead of waiting for others to feed me.

Besides cooking, I did a lot of farm work in my childhood. I got to know how to plant vegetables. The experience taught me things that many of my peers (同龄人) who grew up in cities still don’t know. For example, I learned that the fruits of peanut plants (花生植株) grow under the soil. I once discussed this with my friends from the city. They thought it was a pity that they didn’t have the chance to learn these things in their lives. The experience of farming brings me a new way to look at the world and teaches me to value everything on my plate.

This may be why I’m so happy to hear that labor education will be required in China. Students in primary and middle schools will have at least one class every week to learn basic household skills like cooking and cleaning. Trust me. These practical skills will help you for the rest of your life.

1. Which cooking skill did the writer master first?
A.Cutting vegetables.B.Making dumplings.
C.Cracking eggs.D.Making dough.
2. How did the writer learn to plant vegetables?
A.By discussing it with her peers.B.By learning it at school.
C.By doing it in life.D.By reading a book about it.
3. What does the writer think of labor education?
A.It is necessary and helpful.
B.It is useless but interesting.
C.It should be required for adults.
D.It is mainly about cooking and cleaning.
4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The writer is an adult with good cooking skill.
B.The children in the cities are not interested in farm work.
C.Making dough is not as easy as it looks.
D.The labor class is valuable for everyone.
5. What is the passage mainly about?
A.What we can learn in villages.
B.How to plant vegetables.
C.Life in Chinese villages.
D.The importance of labor education.

Have you noticed that time seems to pass more slowly when you’re waiting in a long line? But when you’re playing with your friends, hours seem like minutes. Of course, time is always passing at the same speed—but why does it sometimes feel different?

A study in the Journal of Neuroscience can tell us the answer. Lead researcher Masamichi Hayashi and his research team in the US have found that it has something to do with neurons (神经元) in our brains that are sensitive (敏感的) to time.

The researchers studied the brain activity of 18 adults who were asked to look at a picture on a screen for a certain length of time. They were then asked to guess how long they’d been looking at the picture. They tended to (倾向于) guess incorrectly in the end when they were asked to stare at the picture for very long or very short periods of time.

After researching into their brain activity further, the researchers discovered neurons that work actively in response to (对……有反应) certain amounts of time, which are called time-sensitive neurons. When they receive repetitive stimulation (重复的刺激) (such as staring at a screen), these neurons finally get “tired” and don’t work properly. It doesn’t matter whether this amount of time is long or short, as long as the stimulation is repetitive. However, other neurons still work normally, having an influence on the ways we experience time.

When you stand in line or do some other repetitive things, such as math homework, your time-sensitive neurons get tired and cause you to feel like time is going slowly. But when you’re doing something more fast-changing, such as playing soccer, you feel like time is flying. Either way, you’d better be careful with your brain when it comes to your experience of time. It may lie.
