1 . What are your parents like? Do they have any strict family rules for you? Do they make you feel stressed? Recently, a mother’s unique idea about her kids’ playtime has caught people’s attention online.
Jessi Meeks says every day, her three kids get an hour where they get to do “whatever” they want. She calls it “whatever-makes-you-happy hour”.
Meeks’ idea arose naturally from one of her kids’ suggestions. “One afternoon, the kids were outside painting and my husband and I were trying to talk and carry on a conversation. My oldest son Cannon looked at me and asked, “Can I paint my hands? And I was like, ‘Whatever makes you happy. You all just do it and be quiet so Mommy and Daddy can talk to each other,’ ” Meeks recalls. “And from then on, around that same time of the day, they would ask if they could do something and we’d be like, ‘Sure, whatever makes you happy.’”
But Meeks also sets necessary boundaries (界限). “If they start hurting themselves or hurting each other, we step in,” she adds,“And we don’t let them watch TV.”
Meeks believes the hour of free playtime has been beneficial for her kids. If they make a big mess, she thinks it’s a good chance to teach little ones the practice of tidying up. At the same time, it’s also a great way to allow time for them to explore and play the way they want.
“Even though the kids make a mess at times, it has worked out well for everyone in my family,” Meeks says. She views “whatever-makes-you-happy hour” as a daily period to make new memories and build a good family relationship.

2 . Have you ever used the Post-it Note? The Post-it Note is a common object that is of great use in our everyday life. It is not only helpful for students but also a necessary office supply (用品).
The start of the Post-it Note can date back to the 1970s when it was accidentally invented by a scientist named George Little. One day, while George Little was working in his laboratory, he developed a special adhesive (粘合剂) by accident that was very sticky but could be easily peeled off without leaving any residue (残留物). Interested in this discovery, he began doing tests with different materials and designs to create a writable, sticky note that could be easily stuck to and taken off from different surfaces. After having tried several months and failed, he finally came up with the design for the Post-it Note.
The new invention was made of a kind of yellow, writable paper that was covered with the special adhesive. When the Post-it Note was first introduced to the public, it was a quick hit. People quickly realized it could be used in many ways and it brought them great convenience. So the Post-it Note quickly became a popular office supply. Now it has already become an indispensable object in homes and offices around the world. No other object can take its place.

Near the hometown of the giant pandas sits the Leshan Giant Buddha, which is one of the most popular places for tourists at home and abroad.
The building of the giant Buddha started in 713. At that time, floods (洪水) often happened in Leshan area where Min River, Qingyi River and Dad u River ran together. Chinese monk (僧侣) Haitong decided to lead people to build a Buddha sculpture to deal with the waters that did harm to the boats traveling down the rivers. It was a super project in ancient times, which required lots of money.
Haitong went to many places to raise money, and after years, he finally raised enough money to start the project. When he got back to Leshan, the officials wanted to force Haitong to hand in the money. Haitong refused even though the officials sent soldiers (士兵) many times. He gouged (挖) his own eyes out to show his sincerity (真诚), scaring the soldiers away.
In the year 713, Haitong started the building of the Buddha, but he passed away when the giant Buddha was built to shoulders. Because of the death of Haitong, the building of the giant Buddha was forced to stop. Later, after many difficulties it was finally completed in 803.

Jet lag is a special period of time when your internal (内部的) clock doesn’t fin in your present time zone. It often happens when you cross different time zones in a very short amount of time. For example, you take a direct flight from Tokyo to Las Vegas and land in Las Vegas at 7 p.m., your body might still be on Tokyo time, which is about 17 hours earlier than local Las Vegas time.
For many people, jet lag can leave them feeling uncomfortable. Ninety percent of them mention experiencing slower thinking, worse mood and especially worse sleep. Here are some tips to help manage the discomfort from jet lag.
Rest up beforehand. Take enough rest as possible ahead of your journey, but don’t force it if you’re not sleepy. You might feel less stressed, even if you end up with a sleepless night after you land.
Change your schedule. Gradually change your schedule toward your target time zone before you leave. You can start heading to bed (and getting up) 15 to 30 minutes earlier or later each day, you will find your sleep time getting closer to your target time zone. You can use jet lag apps like Time Shifter to create a new schedule.
Be careful with coffee. You could choose to have some coffee on the flight to help you stay up, if you arrive in day time. Avoid it if you land during the night, so hopefully you’ll be sleepy enough to fall asleep naturally.

World Sleep Day fell on March 21 this year. And the theme was “Sleep equality for all people’s health”.
Chinese people sleep less than 7 hours every night, according to the result reported by the Chinese Sleep Research Society. Also, many Chinese people can’t sleep well.
What should we do? First, try to use an alarm with softer and lower sounds because it is never fun for people to be woken up by a ringing alarm. Second, sleep early and get up early. Some young people may go to bed late at 2 am and get up at 10 am. They think that as long as they have 8 hours of sleep, everything will be fine. But in fact, our bodies can tell time. They use light and temperature to do so. If we wake up too late, our bodies might feel stuck (困于) between sleep and being awake. That’s why we sometimes feel even more tired after oversleeping. So go to bed early and get up early. This is good for our health.
1. Over 38.2% of Chinese people have deep sleep according to the survey.2. If you have 8 hours of sleep, you will keep healthy.

7 . What subject do you worry about most at school? Many students worry about math. Some students can’t sleep well the day before a math exam. Others may feel very nervous during the exam. But there might be a way to make the subject less stressful .
“For people who are worried about math, posture (姿势) makes a big difference,” Erik Peper from San Francisco State University told the Daily Mail. That’s right—sitting up straight can help you do better on math exams.
Scientists tested 125 college students. They asked them to do a simple math exam while sitting in a slumped-over (趴倒的) posture, or sitting up straight. After the test, 56 percent of students said the exam was easier to do if they were sitting up straight.
“Slumping over is a defensive (戒备的) posture. It can bring about bad memories in the body and brain. This can stop you from thinking clearly,” Peper said.
Students who were not nervous about taking the math exam did not necessarily benefit (受益) from better posture. But they did find that doing math while slumping over was more difficult, Science Daily reported. Good posture isn’t just helpful for taking math exams. Sportspeople, musicians and public speakers can all benefit from better posture. When you feel stressed out, you can also try to sit up straight or stand tall. It can help you feel more positive and focus better.

Have you ever heard of over-processed foods? They are actually foods made in factories with long lists of additives (添加剂) and you can hardly recreate them in your own kitchen. Things that you like, including chips, cookies and ice-cream are typical examples of such foods.
According to a recent study in the British Medical Journal, over-processed foods are loved all over the world and many people are even addicted (成瘾的) to them. The study found that in some cases, if people stop eating over-processed food, they easily feel sad.
But how does that happen? Usually, natural foods are either high in carbohydrates or fat. Over-processed foods, however, are high in both. So, they have much more calories than natural foods. Also, our body breaks down natural foods slowly while over-processed foods work in the opposite way. Chemicals from over-processed foods break down as soon as they reach the stomach. Our brain catches such a message almost at the same time. As a result, we will feel happier and want to eat more.
Research has shown that about 14% of adults and 12% of children are addicted to over-processed foods. What’s worse, people who love eating over-processed foods easily become over-weight, have high blood pressure or develop heart illnesses.
Scientists call for more attention to over-processed foods. Governments worldwide are taking action. As many as 103 countries have already put taxes (税收) on some major kinds of over-processed foods, which means people need to pay more to buy them. There are also laws to order producers to add nutrition labels (营养标签) to these over-processed foods so that buyers can make wiser choices when deciding whether or not to buy them. In some developed countries, certain additives are not allowed to come into these over-processed foods any more.

9 . Noise pollution is a serious problem in big cities. A study shows that Guangzhou has the worst noise pollution, followed by Delhi in India. Beijing comes sixth. To help follow and control noise pollution, a noise map has been developed by the Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences (环境科学研究院). It allows people to “see” noise.
On the map, there are 12 colors which mean 12 noise levels. For example, purple means noise between 30 and 35 decibels (分贝) while dark green means noise between 40 and 45 decibels. The place where the noise is between 50 and 65 decibels is shown in bright red. Blue means noise between 75 and 80 decibels. Roads along busy elevated (高架的) ways are often red or blue, while neighborhoods and parks are usually quieter, showing a color of green or purple.
In fact, years earlier, some countries in Europe have been required by the EU (欧盟) to make noise maps for cities with a population of over 250, 000. Some cities in Japan, South Korea and the US also have noise maps. Most of these countries don’t update their maps often, but the noise map of Shanghai gets updated every 20 minutes, giving researchers an idea of how the noise level changes with time in certain areas. For example, noise levels may rise as a car comes near, and fall again after it has passed. Weather and season also make a difference to noise levels. The noise map will be used to help reduce noise in cities. It can also be helpful if you’re looking for a quiet neighborhood to live in.
