2 . The most basic and powerful way to connect with another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our full attention.

When people are talking, there is no need to do anything but listen to their words. Just take them in. Listen to what they are saying. Care about it. Caring is even more important than understanding. It has taken me a long time to believe in the importance of saying “I’m so sorry” when someone is in trouble.

One of my friends told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often broke in to tell her that something similar happened to them. For some reason or other, her trouble became a story about them. In the end, she stopped talking to most people. She was just too lonely. We connect through listening. When we interrupt (打断) someone to let them know that we understand, we move attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care.

It’s not that easy to learn to listen. It certainly went against everything that I was taught. I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has more importance to help and to connect than the kindest words.

For a long time, people used tea as a kind of herbal medicine(草药). During Tang Dynasty, tea was first sent to European countries through the Silk Road. Tea made Chinese culture spread over in the Western countries. The first book about tea was The Classic of Tea by Lu Yu in Tang Dynasty. In the book, he described the tea culture such as growth areas for tea trees, skills for processing and tasting of tea, and the history of Chinese tea.

However, tea didn’t always play a good role in Chinese history. In Song Dynasty, many people spent too much time on tea instead of thinking about the safety of the country. Between the end of Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, many people paid more attention to tea. People thought of it as the symbol of the spirit.

There are many benefits(益处) of Chinese tea. It can help people lose weight and it is good for people’s skin and health. According to the study, some kind of tea is effective in losing weight. What’s more, it has become an international drink. Lots of Chinese and foreigners regard tea as one of the most popular presents to give others during important festivals.

6 . Do you know Pleasure of Farmhouse (农家乐)? It’s a new way for holidays in China. Now, more and more people are interested in it, especially young people.

Every weekend, thousands of people drive to the countryside. The farmers invite them to their farms even homes. Many people help the farmers work on the farms, such as fishing, watering the crops or picking apples.

7 . Usually when a movie comes out, the actors get all the glory (荣誉). But they are only a small part of the movie-making process (过程). Thousands of people work behind the scenes to make a great movie. Without them, movies would not be possible.

Director: Movie directors direct the movies. They are like the top managers in an office or a factory. The directors choose the actors and tell them how to perform their roles. They work with almost everyone in the movie, telling them what to do and how to do it.

Camera operator: Camera operators are experts at using movie cameras. They work long hours, making sure the pictures and actors look really good in every scene.

Costume designer: Costume designers are responsible for designing or making costumes. Sometimes costume designers have to work late into the night so that actors can have their clothes ready for the next day of filming.

Sound operator: Sound operators are responsible for production sound. They record the dialogue between the actors on the movie set. Later, in production, they add sound effects. They also mix music into the movie.

Set designer: A movie set is the place where all the action happens in a movie. Set designers work hard to build sets for the movie. Without them, movies would not look as real.

8 . The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th of the first month of the lunar calendar. This day is always the first full moon in the New Year. Ancient people also called it Shangyuan Festival. Celebrations and traditions on this day began from the Han Dynasty and became popular in the Tang Dynasty.

Watching the red lanterns is one of the main traditions. Lanterns of different shapes and sizes are usually put on trees, or along river banks on show. It is said that sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming to ask for help when he was in trouble. Today, when the lanterns slowly rise into the air, people make wishes.

Another tradition is guessing lantern riddles. The riddles are usually short, wise, and sometimes humorous. The answer to a riddle can be a Chinese character(汉字), a famous person’s name, or a place name.

The most important thing is to eat sweet dumplings with different tastes. In northern China, they are called yuanxiao while in southern part they’re named tangyuan. Because making sweet dumplings is like a game or an activity, they are usually done happily by a group of friends or family members.

In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic(浪漫的). Watching lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty shows this:

Hundreds and thousands of times I searched for her in the crowd. Suddenly I turned, and there she stood, in the dim(昏暗的) light.

9 . We do eye exercises. We wear sunglasses. We do lots of things to protect our eyes. But we usually forget another important part of our body — the ears. Ears help us hear the world. But many things, such as loud noises, can hurt our ears, even make us deaf. Once this happens, it’s hard to get your hearing back. March 3rd is Ear Care Day. So how can we protect our ears? Let’s take a look together.

Keep your ears dry and warm

Dry your ears with a towel (毛巾) after swimming or taking a shower. If you feel water in your ear, shake your head a little bit. This can help you get the water out of your ear. Also, when the sun is shining, wear some sunscreen (防晒霜) on your ears. During the winter, protect your ears with a hat or a scarf.

How to clean your ears

Usually, our ears clean themselves. The earwax (耳垢) builds up, dries out, and then comes out of the ear along with some dirt. Don’t clean your ears with anything sharp (尖锐的), or it may make the earwax go too deep into your ears and hurt them. But if your ears start to hurt, you can go to a doctor for help.

How to use earphones

Don’t listen to loud music on your earphones for a long time. Follow the “60 Rule”: listen to music for no more than 60 minutes a day. Over-ear (头戴式) better than in-ear ones. It will do a better job of stopping outside noise. So you can listen at a lower volume.

10 . We all know that some pollution problems are still serious in the world. Everybody is worried about the change of the climate. But few of us realize that noise pollution is doing harm to our health seriously now. Noise has a direct effect on us, but we seldom notice its harm. More and more students enjoy listening to music with an earphone on their ears. When they listen to the music, they like to turn up the volume(音量), while watching TV, they often turn up the sound of the TV to the top. They haven’t realized that the noise is weakening their hearing.

Noise pollution is a source of increasing sadness to people in our society. Noise can be said as a kind of unwanted sound. If people are often disturbed by it, they may feel uneasy or annoyed. What’s worse, the noise can make some people mad. If a worker works in a printing factory for long, his hearing loss is much faster than a common person working in a quiet environment. So everybody must pay more attention to the noise pollution. Generally speaking, the following four types of noise should be watched out for:
