A team of scientists at Boston University has been working with NASA to study Earth’s green vegetation (植被). They used a special NASA camera and found that global leaf area had increased by 5 percent since the early 2000s. And according to the study, China was responsible for 25 percent of that gain (收获). That’s about one-quarter of the size of the entire Amazon rainforest (亚马逊热带雨林).

The growth mainly came from China’s forest protection programs, NASA said. For example, since1962, China has been planting trees in Saihanba, Hebei Province. It was once a desert. But now, China has turned the area into the country’s largest man-made forest.

The Chinese public has also joined in these activities recently. Ant Forest (蚂蚁森林) gives users points for doing eco-friendly things. 8 . The 32nd Summer Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan in 2021. The organizers have shown the medals(奖牌)to be presented at the Games. Though the design(设计)of the medals is simple, they look shiny from any direction. And do you know that these medals were made from old smartphones and other electronics(电子产品)?

The idea was first introduced in 2016 by a group of young Japanese environmentalists. They wanted people to pay attention to the amount of e-waste created by the country’s tech-loving people who change their electronics very often. To protect the environment, the Organizing Committee started the “Everyone’s Medal” program in April 2017. The program encouraged people to drop used electronics in certain places. By the time the collection ended in March 2019, 78.985 tons of used smartphones and other small electronics had been collected. The program finally got enough metals to make every medal.

The Olympic Committee hopes the 2021 Tokyo medals will draw people’s attention to the fast increase in e-waste, not just in Japan, but in the world.

Though Japan is the first Olympic host country to make all the medals by using metals from used electronics, it is not the only one to come up with the idea. Brazil made 30% of the silver and bronze medals by using recycled materials for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

9 . The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (联盟)in America every year. The champion of the National Football Conference ( NFC) competes against the champion of the American Football Conference ( AFC) to decide which is the best team in the country. Super Bowl is far more than a sporting event. The mix of America’s biggest institutions (体系):sports, TV, food consumption (消费),advertising (广告)and entertainment makes the Super Bowl an American cultural phenomemon.

The Super Bowl is usually held on the last Sunday of January or the first Sunday of February. That day is called Super Bowl Sunday. For years, it has been the most watched one-day sporting event and it gradually has become an unofficial national holiday.

Super Bowl Sunday sees more parties than any other day during the year. Young people gather to watch the game on TV. The Super Bowl is the third biggest eating day in America—behind Christmas and Thanksgiving. Fans host Super Bowl parties by filling their living rooms with junk food and drinks. Guests may arrive dressed in their team's T-shirt and carrying beer to share.

Knowing that the Super Bowl has the attention of millions of Americans, companies pay big money for game-time advertising. In 2019, the advertising cost set a record— $5.3 million for 30 seconds. The Super Bowl has developed to a TV selling season sandwiched between after-Christmas sales and Valentine's Day (情人节).

Another tradition of the Super Bowl is the Halftime Show, which presents at the halftime break between the second and third quarters. The Super Bowl Halftime Show is the most-watched musical event of the year. So it is also called the Americans’ Spring Festival Gala (春晚).Non-football fans tune (调台)into the Super Bowl for the most famous musicians’ performances during halftime. The show represents a link between American football and pop culture and helps broaden the television audience and nationwide interest.
