1 . In the past, libraries mainly played the role of storing books. People used to go to a library to borrow books and get information. But today, libraries have been a place with well-equipped facilities (装备齐全的设施) and people can stay there comfortably for a whole day.
Liu, a third-year student at Guangdong Medical University, has been a regular visitor to her school library since her first year. “When I feel bored at home, I’ll check my phone. But it makes me more bored, while staying in the library is different. It offers a great study environment. It makes me calm and I can lose myself in study in the library.”
Tang, a student in Beijing, thinks the library is the only place where she can put her hear completely in her study. So since high school, She’s studied in libraries. “I felt I was facing pressure (压力). I was afraid of falling behind. I had no idea about how to relax. Accidentally I found peace in libraries.”
Libraries are also being visited by some people who lost their jobs. Zhong from Shanghai has visited a library since last year. “My family don’t know my situation, and I don’t want them to worry about me, so visiting the library is a way to conceal this from them,” Zhong said. Zhong visits the Pudong Library every weekday and plans to continue doing so until she finds a job again.
Now, libraries are not only a place of knowledge, but also a space which can offer users a platform for personal growth. Whoever you are, you can stay at libraries to read books, relax and reflect (反省).

The fourth Friday in November is super special, even more exciting than summer holidays or birthdays. Why? Because it’s Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days when you can find amazing deals on things you love. But what is Black Friday, and why is it so much fun?
It began in the US on the Friday after American Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday in November. The first people to use “Black Friday” were the Philadelphia (费城) police in the 1960s. On the day large numbers of people traveled there for Christmas shopping as well as an annual Army-Navy football game. The day was “black” because the police couldn’t take a day off after Thanksgiving, and instead had to work extra hard to control the crowds. It was in Philadelphia that stores first began to use this Friday as a good day for shopping, with some trying to call it “Big Friday”. But later the name “Black Friday” was widely used among people. In the end of the 1980s, it became an important shopping day across the US and, in time, around the world!
While in the past, videos would show crowds of people running into shops and fighting for the best prices, a lot of the buying now takes place online. Many companies now even begin their sales long before Black Friday itself, starting as early as the beginning of November, meaning there’s no need to line up as people did before.
Whether in stores or online, enjoy your Black Friday adventure to find great deals and have fun!

3 . ①Whenever you walk past a cafe, you might take interest in the coffee because of its delicious smell. But when you try this dark drink you will regret it, because it tastes like Chinese medicine. Our senses are mismatched because of the “second sense of smell” according to the Telegraph.
②“We have two senses of smell,” explained Barry Smith, professor of the University of London. “One is when you breathe (呼吸) in things from the environment, and the other is when the air comes up the nose and is breathed out through the nose.
③When we drink coffee, for example, the act of swallowing (吞咽) sends the smell up the back of our nose from inside the mouth. This wakes up the second sense of smell in our brain. As a result, it gives us a different feeling.
④In fact, the second sense of smell plays a big part in our eating experience. It may be common sense that we smell through our nose and taste using our tongue (舌头). But the truth is 80% of what we think of as taste actually reaches us through smell. Just hold your nose while eating and you will notice that your tongue can only catch a very small part of the flavor (味道).
⑤However, ____▲____. Durians(榴莲) and some cheeses are examples.“Think of a piece of cheese with an unpleasant smell,” Smith said.“It smells like the inside of a teenager’s training shoe. But once it’s in your mouth, and you are experiencing the smell through the nose in the other direction, it is delicious.

4 . ①The word “zhiyin”, which means close friends, comes from the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi in the Warring States Period.
②Boya was good at playing the guqin. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi, a woodcutter (樵夫) who happened to pass by, could understand exactly what he wanted to express through his music. After a long talk, they became good friends. Before Boya had to return to his state, they agreed to meet again in the following year.
③The following year, Boya took his guqin to the place where they met for the first time. It was an exciting date for him to meet Ziqi. He waited for a long time, but Ziqi didn’t appear. Unfortunately, when visiting Ziqi’s father, Boya heard that his good friend had died from a disease. Boya was so sad and in front of Ziqi’s tomb (墓), he played again the music he had played when they first met. The feeling of the music was so strong that it was as if the rivers and the mountains were crying. When finishing playing, Boya broke his guqin into pieces. From then on, Boya never played again.
④People in the Song Dynasty built the Guqin Tai in Hanyang to the memory of the deep friendship between Boya and Ziqi. It became an important part of the local culture.
⑤Zhiyin culture has new development in the new period. The famous ancient Chinese classical music piece Gaoshan Liushui was performed during the G2.0 Summit (峰会) in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in 2016. Good evening, everyone! My name is Wang Linghui. I’m glad to give a speech in the school hall. My topic is “Say ‘No’ to junk food”.
Do you like fried chicken, hamburgers or ice cream? You may answer, “Yes, I like them very much. They are delicious!” But if I tell you these foods are all junk food, do you believe it? Yes, they are really junk food. They are not healthy food. If we often eat them, we may become unhealthy and even ill. But I find many students in our school like eating junk food. I don’t think it’s a good eating habit so we should give it up.
In order to keep healthy, we shouldn’t eat junk food. We should eat more healthy food, for example, eggs, meat, fruit and vegetables. Only healthy food can help us keep healthy and have a good life. Let’s eat more healthy food. To junk food, we should say “No”!
1. Where does the speaker give the speech?2. Why do students like junk food?
3. What can help us keep healthy and have a good life?
4. The underlined word “them” refers to(指的是)
5. Do you like eating junk food? Why or why not?(不超过20个词)
6 . So, it’s exam time again. Have you done the necessary work to get good marks? Sleeping with the textbook under the pillow(枕头)doesn’t work. The best way is to space your practice out, rather than cram(塞)it all together. Just as a scientist called Tom Stafford advises, if you organize five hours of study into one hour a day, you’ll remember more than if you study for five hours on one day.
△ Get pens and paper and start working! Students who can test themselves earlier will be better at retrieving the knowledge from the memory and keep it in the long run. John Dunlosky, a professor in the US, suggests that “you start by reading a textbook with your favorite pens and colors, and then write down the important ideas on small cards while doing so you actually try to test yourselves on them.”
Good revision(复习)should give you confidence, but if you are still worried, it’s not harmful to follow some special customs. In Japan it seems to be a tradition for students to eat Katsudon before a test. This is a bowl of rice with egg and pork pieces. The name of the dish makes people think of the word “Katsu”, meaning “winning”. For some students in South Korea, the key to success is not washing their hair before an exam, because they believe they could wash all the knowledge out of their heads. And in different parts of the world, there are always those who believe in their “lucky underwear”.
The bottom line is that you need to study, eat a good meal, sleep well on the eve of the test, and believe that your efforts will pay off.
Good luck in your exam!

7 . Everybody knows that football is one of the most popular sports in the world. However, there are many other kinds. Which would you like to try?
Foot fireball (Kade, Indonesia)
Both men and women play foot fireball in Indonesia. It’s like normal (正常的) football, but the ball is on fire! People watch in amazement (惊愕) when players kick the burning ball. There is a goal (球门), but no goalkeeper because it is too dangerous to pick up the ball. We celebrate special days by playing the game, and more and more visitors come to watch it.
Rollersoccer (Max, Holland)
Rollersoccer is football played on skates. It’s played like normal football, but it’s faster and more exciting. Imagine kicking a football while you are wearing skates! It sounds like a crazy idea to many people, but players say that it’s actually easy to learn. I also think it’s safer than other sports because players can wear protective pads (防护垫). I play in a rollersoccer club and I want to play in the World Cup one day because I’m good at both football and skating.
Swamp soccer (Matilda, Finland)
If you like getting dirty, swamp soccer could be the game for you. Finland held its first tournament (锦标赛) in 1997 and now it has become a big soccer competition around the world. The rules are similar (类似的) to those for normal soccer, but the six players on each team can be men or women.
Bossaball (Luis, Brazil)
If you want to try something completely different, how about playing bossaball? It has rules similar to volleyball, but players can play the ball with any part of their body. You must think a computer is the best thing in the world, right? You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything? Well, it’s not! In fact, the brain is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First, your eyes check out what’s going on, then tell your brain, and your brain decides how quickly you need to react(反应), and then your muscles(肌肉) go into action. That is just from your brain. No computers could ever come close to that!
The brain weighs just 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ(器官). There are about 100 billion tiny, tiny little cells(细胞) in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all!
Your brain stops growing when you’re 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won’t be able to fool them! Believe it or not, your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long-term memory establishment(建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.
So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.
