文章大意:本文主要讲述了“心流”的精神状态。

1 . Have you ever lost yourself in doing something so that you lost track of time? Everything around you—from the ringing of phones to the people passing in the hallways—seemed to be away.

Most of us have had this experience at one time or another. This is a mental state called “flow”. When it happens, we completely focus on the task before us so that nothing else seems to matter. We feel energetic, even joyful, about what we are doing.

The idea of flow was introduced and first studied by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihályi. His flow model shows the emotional states, which we’re likely to experience when trying to complete a task, depend on the difficulty of the challenge and our skill levels. For example, if the task is low challenging and doesn’t require a lot of skills, we’re likely to feel apathy and bored towards it. But facing a challenging task without the required skills could easily result in worry and anxiety. To perform at our best, we need a task with a high difficulty level, and we believe we have well-developed skills to do it. This moves us to a position where we can experience “flow”.

________? During flow, people can improve performance and get better result, faster. For instance, artists who Csikszentmihályi interviewed, said that they were highly productive, and that their work was done perfectly “without putting in much effort” in the flow state. Flow can also make people more curious and creative because they have to seek new challenges and information to keep the state. With flow, people have greater levels of happiness and satisfaction in their activities.

Flow often happens during creative activities and sports activities. But flow states aren’t just something experienced by artists, writers, or sports persons. Flow can happen anytime a person is deeply engaged in a task, including during learning activities. Many people want to achieve flow more often in their daily lives. While doing a task, having clear plans, adding something challenge-able and giving and receiving feedback in time can help achieve flow. It’s more difficult to achieve flow if the focus is disturbed, so it’s necessary that smartphones, TV and other distractions get turned off.

1. When people are in flow, they ________.
A.need to dicuss on the phoneB.focus on the time often
C.give full attention to their tasksD.notice others passing by
2. According to Csikszentmihályi’s model, which part shows the flow state?
A.B.C.D.
3. Which of the following can be the best topic sentence of Paragraph 4?
A.Why is flow so enjoyableB.When can people experience flow
C.What advantages does flow bringD.How do people use the flow model
4. Who can most probably achieve flow according to the passage?
A.A writer who gets much advice after publishing a book.
B.An artist who is drawing an apple for his 10-year-old daughter.
C.A chess player who knows what to do before competitions.
D.A student who prefers doing homework while watching TV.

文章大意:本文通过虎鲸Kiska的经历来告诉人们应该多关心圈养的动物。
2 .

Kiska, the last captive killer whale in Canada—also known as “the loneliest whale in the world”—died in March, 2023.

In 1979, when Kiska was three years old, she was caught from the North Atlantic Ocean and taken to an aquarium in Iceland. She lived with four other young killer whales, including Keiko, the future star of the “Free Willy” movies. In the same year, she and Keiko were sold to a theme park in Canada called Marineland. The pair lived there together in the 1980s. Keiko was later saved and sent to the ocean near Iceland, but Kiska had to spend her whole life in Marineland.

Kiska suffered a lot while living in Marineland. She was trained to perform for the public for nearly thirty years, even in a bad health condition. Throughout her life in captivity, she gave birth to five babies. Sadly, all of them died at young ages. After that, Kiska lived alone in the pool. No family members swam by her side. No friends invited her to play. She really wanted to go back to the ocean, but she couldn’t.

Killer whales are able to feel deep emotions better than humans, so it is hard to imagine the trauma Kiska experienced. She spent her final years swimming in endless circles or simply floating lifelessly. Kiska even hit her head against the pool purposefully.

Videos of Kiska’s self-harm received over 229, 000 views online. What happened to her shows how cruel it is to keep animals in captivity. In 2019, Canada banned the captivity of whales. Hopefully there will be more ways to help as many captive animals as possible return to nature.

1. When was Kiska sent to Marineland, Canada?
A.In 1976.B.In 1979.C.In 1980.D.In 1982.
2. What can we learn about Kiska’s life in Marineland?
A.Her five babies died young.B.She refused to swim with family.
C.Keiko lived with her until she died.D.She needn’t perform when she was sick.
3. The underlined word “trauma” probably means ________ .
A.deep worryB.big dangerC.great painD.serious illness
4. The writer’s opinion is probably that ________ .
A.people should care more about captive animals
B.laws will be more useful in helping captive animals
C.theme parks need to look after captive animals better
D.better videos of captive animals should be shared online

3 .

The science fiction movie The Wandering Earth Ⅱ has been quite popular since its release on Jan 22. The space elevators in the movie are quite impressive—elevator cars travel quickly between the cables hat connect Earth’s surface and the space station. This device may not only be imagined in the future.

Early in 1895, Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was inspired by the Eiffel Tower. He pointed out that if humans could build a tower high enough to reach space, people would be able to travel by space elevators. However, such a tower is impossible because no matter how large its base is, it would not be able to support the whole system.

Scientists then considered the idea in a different way. Earth’s satellites, about 36, 000 kilometers high in the sky, appear to be fixed in space. They rotate around Earth once every day. According to Scientific American, if such a satellite could drop cables towards Earth, and the cables could be fixed to Earth’ surface, then the whole system would rotate along with Earth.

This seems possible, but one of the challenges that stop engineers from building the elevators is the cables’ material. According to an article by the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a carbon nanotube might be the most proper material. It weighs 1. 6 grams and it can hold more than 800 tons which is about the weight of 160 elephants. Since its discovery in 1991, scientists have been trying to create a carbon nanotube as long as possible. However, the longest carbon nanotube with a perfect structure was only about half a meter. It was developed by a team at Tsinghua University in 2013.

Space elevators require far less energy and money than rockets. With space elevators, space tasks would be carried out more easily and more frequently. Although scientists have not solved the key problem, they will continue doing research on carbon nanotubes. Maybe one day the space elevator will enter our life.

3. The key problem of space elevators at present is ________.
A.how to create carbon nanotubes faster
B.how to make carbon nanotubes lighter
C.how to develop longer carbon nanotubes
D.how to discover more carbon nanotubes
4. What is the best title of the passage? ________
A.Space Elevators:A Widely Used Invention
B.Space Elevators:A New Device on the Way
C.Space Elevators:A Science Project in China

4 .

You might not know Giorgio Morandi (1890—1964), the Italian painter. But you might know the Morandi colors, which are named after him. And these years, Morandi and his art have got popular all around the world.

The Morandi colors are not bright. They look like they’re covered with a layer of gray. Morandi made the colors himself. He mixed gray and white with each color so that they became less bright. Morandi colors are quiet and give people a peaceful feeling. They appear in everything from fashion design to daily crafts.

Besides these special colors, Morandi is well-known for drawing small, still objects and scenery from daily life. He would often paint the same group of objects again and again. They include bottles, cups, vases, flowers, and things outside his window. He once said that the feelings and pictures around us were very difficult to express, because they were decided by form, color, space and light. So he drew things in different situations to show their colors and shapes.

Morandi had many books about traditional Chinese art. Did he learn from it? We don’t know. But some people compare the stillness of Morandi’s works with the peaceful feeling of Song Dynasty paintings. They show the same feeling in some way.

Morandi and his art help us to relearn how to look at things we didn’t see, and how to look at the objects we thought to be meaningless before. Morandi influenced a lot of artists and led to the birth of minimalism, a kind of modern art which shows the simplification of form and color.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了eVTOL飞机。
6 .

A common helicopter is a VTOL, as it takes off up-and-down vertically, rather than landing like a plane. If we power it with electricity, then it’s an eVTOL. Some might call eVTOLs “flying cars”, but they’re more exactly called electric helicopters.

Thanks to the progress in electric research and the growing need for new transport, this technology has developed. What makes them suitable for use in cities? First of all, an electric transportation is better for the environment than a fuel-powered one. For this to be true, the electricity will need to come from a renewable source. Besides, it has been tested that a two-hour ride by car through traffic rush hours would be shortened to an 18-minute ride by eVTOL aircraft. Moreover, eVTOL aircraft have been reported as being 100 times quieter than common aircraft. As for price, travelling by eVTOL aircraft will cost almost the same as common rideshare services that we have nowadays every mile.

_________. Presently, there are still no rules which are offered to guide the use of eVTOL aircraft, but they will need laws before they can start to fly. Besides, eVTOL aircraft aren’t designed for less-than-perfect weather conditions. Wind speed, rain, and air temperature all will affect their performance. What’s more, the battery is still a big problem for longer trips and larger aircraft. The road to improve eVTOL technology is still very long.

Anyway, many companies are interested in this technology, including Airbus and Boeing. They actively joined in eVTOL development. Airbus has its single-seat eVTOL named Vahana and four-seat City Airbus in the works. Boeing is also working with carmaker Porsche to develop a better eVTOL transport.

Actually, the eVTOL which makes air transportation easier, is expected to be used for many purposes in addition to transporting people. For example, it can be used for transporting food and water. And it could also serve as a mobile cell tower in places under natural disasters.

1. It can be learnt from the passage that eVTOL aircraft _______.
A.land just like planesB.are powered by electricity
C.can’t take off verticallyD.are the same as electric cars
2. How did the writer show the advantages of eVTOL aircraft in Paragraph 2?
A.By telling stories.B.By comparing facts.
C.By drawing pictures.D.By giving examples.
3. Which sentence can be put in the “________” in Paragraph 3?
A.eVTOLs are very great for people to use to travel in cities.
B.Different weather will have a serious influence on eVTOLs.
C.Scientists have solved many problems in developing eVTOLs.
D.eVTOLs still face many difficulties before entering the market.
4. What might be the writer’s opinion?
A.eVTOLs will have a bright future.B.eVTOLs are useless for most time.
C.eVTOLs will be much cheaper soon.D.eVTOLs won’t get much attention.

Vanuatu is a nation of small islands in the South Pacific. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. But for those interested in adventure sports, it’s a perfect place. Vanuatu’s islands offer visitors two of the most exciting and dangerous activities in the world: volcano surfing and land diving*.

Volcano Surfing

On Tanna Island, Yasur is one of Vanuatu’s few active volcanoes. It erupts almost every day, sometimes several times a day. For centuries, both locals and tourists have climbed it to visit the top. Recently, people have also started climbing Yasur to surf the volcano. In some ways, volcano surfing is like surfing in the sea, but in other ways, it’s very different. A volcano surfer tries to escape the erupting volcano—without being hit by flying rocks! It’s fast, fun, and dangerous.

Land Diving

Most people are familiar with bungee jumping, one of the most exciting and dangerous sports. But did you know that bungee jumping started on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu almost 15 centuries ago? The activity called land diving is part of a special ceremony. A man ties two tree vines* around his feet. He then climbs a wooden tower around 20 to 30 meters high, crosses his arms, and jumps headfirst. He tries to touch the earth with the top of his head—without breaking the vines or hitting the ground hard. Every spring, local boys and men still perform this amazing test of bravery. Women are not allowed to dive, but they support the divers by dancing and singing at the bottom of the tower. Many tourists come to the island every year to watch this ancient tradition.

1. According to the passage Vanuatu is________.
A.famous for adventure sportsB.a place with the smallest island
C.a big country in Pacific OceanD.too dangerous for people to visit
2. From Paragraph 2, we can see Picture________is volcano surfing.

Underwater farm

We grow vegetables on land and in space. How about underwater?

Look at Nemo’s garden in Italy. It’s the world’s first underwater green house. The garden is made up of six to nine big plastic bubbles*. They stay about 4.5 to 11 meters under the sea. Each can hold 2000 litre of air. Scientists grow over 100 different kinds of vegetables there, including tomatoes and beans.

How to grow vegetables underwater
①Water the vegetables

Sunlight goes through the water and warms the wet air in each bubble. Salt goes out. Fresh water is left and waters the plants.

②Watch the vegetables

There are sensors* in the bubble to check conditions for the growth of plants.

③Pick the vegetables

People swim inside the bubble. They put plants in clean plastic bags and bring them on land.

Did you know?

Underwater vegetables are richer in nutrition* than those grown on land. They may help to solve future food problems in places without enough fresh water and land.

1. Nemo’s garden in Italy is ________ .
A.a big famous garden on landB.a green house in the water
C.planted with different flowersD.formed with over ten bubbles
2. When we plant vegetables underwater, ________ .

文章大意:本文是一篇科普文章,主要讲述了科学家们在寻找让人类冬眠的方法,研究人员已经发现了冬眠背后的秘密:“Q神经元”,动物大脑中的这些神经元可以使它们进入冬眠状态。

9 . As the days are getting colder, you might wish you could magically turn into a bear and spend the winter sleeping. In fact, scientists are looking for ways to let humans hibernate, too!

During hibernation, an animal’s heart rate and breathing slow down. They can save energy when there is little food in the winter months.

Japanese researchers have found the secret behind hibernation—the “Q neurons”. These neurons in animals’ brains can put them into a hibernation state. The researchers also did operations on mice after turning on the mice’s “Q neurons”. It turned out that during hibernation, the operations do less harm to the mice.

According to the team, humans’ “O neurons”cannot be turned on and off as easily as the mice’s. But they are confident in copying the mice’s hibernation in humans. That means we could let people “hibernate”when having operations, causing less damage to their bodies.

In recent years, more scientists are getting to realize the benefits of hibernation. US scientist Katherine Grabek found that when the thirteen-lined ground squirrel hibernates, it cleans out harmful brain plaques that are related to Alzheimer’s in humans. They hope to design some medicine for humans based on this finding. Besides, some studies in bats show that, during hibernation, their bodies age more slowly. This also provides new ideas for making humans live longer in the future, according to New Scientist magazine.

At the same time, scientists have found a lot of fun facts on animals. For example, a bat’s heart rate drops to 25 beats per minute during hibernation—down from 400 when it’s awake. Its breathing slows so much that it might not take a breath for up to an hour! Also, a black bear can go without eating, drinking or going to the bathroom for 100 days. During hibernation, their wounds even heal perfectly.

1. Paragraph 2 introduces _________.
A.what is needed for hibernationB.where animals usually hibernate
C.what kind of animals hibernateD.what happens during hibernation
2. What have Japanese researchers found?
A.Humans don’t have “Q neurons” as mice do.
B.It’s difficult to turn on the mice’s “Q neurons”.
C.It’s impossible for humans to copy the hibernation.
D.Doing operations in the hibernation state is less harmful.
3. What will happen in the future based on the scientists’ findings?
A.People can hibernate whenever they like.
B.People may hibernate to slow down aging.
C.People may use animals to create new medicine.
D.People can go without eating or drinking for 100 days.
4. The passage is written to _________.
A.share some findings on hibernationB.introduce fun facts on hibernation
C.show the achievements in operationsD.present a new way of doing operations

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了中国的甲骨文,甲骨文不仅告诉了我们中国古代的文化,也是我们理解汉语书面形式和发展的关键。

10 . How do we know about things that happened thousands of years ago, when there were no videos or photos? One answer is written records. The earliest written records of Chinese culture and history are known as oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文).

More than 3,000 years ago, people in the Shang Dynasty(c. 16th—11th century BC)liked to ask fortune tellers (占卜师 ) about the future. For example, what will the weather be like next week? Where should I go to make money? Will my wife give birth to a boy or a girl? From work to love, people asked questions about many topics. The fortune teller would write the question on an oracle bone, heat it up, and then read the cracks (裂纹) in it to find an answer. That’s how oracle bone inscriptions started.

Tens of thousands of oracle bones have been found so far. They can tell us a great deal about how people lived during the Shang Dynasty. “They help us understand the origins of Chinese philosophy and thought, and find out where our culture comes from,” Song Zhenhao, a leading oracle bone expert, told China Daily.

In addition to telling us about ancient Chinese culture, the oracle bones are also key to understanding the growth and development of the written form of the Chinese language. Many of the characters we use today are similar to those used 3,000 years ago. “The oracle bone inscriptions, as the earliest-known mature (成熟的)form of Chinese characters, show the beauty of a language that has been passed down years after years,” said Chen Nan, a professor at Tsinghua University.

In 2017, UNESCO added oracle bone inscriptions to its Memory of the World Register. They are indeed a valuable memory of ancient China.

1. According to Paragraph 1, one way to study ancient China is through _________.
A.videosB.photosC.charactersD.experts
2. What does the underlined word “origins” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.birthsB.interestsC.resultsD.goals
3. What can we learn from the oracle bones?
a. culture of the ancient Chinese                  b. future life told by fortune tellers
c. beauty of the Chinese language               d. changes of the Chinese language
A.abcB.abdC.acdD.bcd
4. From the passage, we learn that oracle bone inscriptions _________.
A.are difficult to find at the momentB.cost experts a lot of money to study
C.first came out during the Shang DynastyD.are totally different from the characters today
