3 . It is often said, “You can’t live only on air.” But now the Chinese scientists can tell you: Maybe you can.
Recently, some Chinese scientists have developed a new technique（技术）. They turned CO2, one of the main greenhouse gases, into starch（淀粉）.
Starch is the main part of flour（面粉）, rice and corn that we eat every day. Usually, it’s created by plants with CO2, water and sunlight.According to the team’s director Ma Yanhe, it takes the plants nearly 60 steps to produce starch. But now, the team, after six years of hard work, has found a simpler way to do this, with only 11 steps.
“Our study shows that creating something like starch is possible in a lab, and this technology may be helpful in many areas.” said Ma.
The scientists first turned CO2 and hydrogen（氢气）into methanol（甲醇）. Then they pieced（分解）these methanol molecules（分子）into bigger and more complex（复杂的）molecules. Finally the starch was produced.
This method makes it possible to produce food in factories, replacing traditional farming. This will not only help make plenty of food, but also save water and land. It may also help recycle CO2 to deal with climate（气候）change, according to China Daily.
The study can be helpful in space, too. Astronauts may no longer need to worry about their food as they travel in space. They may simply turn the CO2 they breathe out into the food they eat!

We sometimes say the lion is “the king of the jungle” because it is stronger and more dangerous than the other animals. Most other animals in the jungle run more slowly than the lion, so it can hunt better. The lion is the top animal in the land food chain.

Xian Xinghai is a very famous musician in China. He has written many great pieces of music. In his short life, he wrote nearly 300 songs and an opera.
Xian was born in Panyu, Guangzhou in 1905.Because his father died before he was born, Xian had to move from place to place with his mother. He began learning to play the violin when he was 20 years old. At first, his violin was so cheap and in a poor quality that he could not play it well. His friends laughed at him. However, Xian did not stop practicing and soon showed his talent. In 1934, he became the first Chinese student who studied in a special music school in Paris. Before he left, Xian became the school's best student and won several prizes for his talents.
The next year, be got back to China and helped fight against the Japanese army. Later, he came to Yan’an to teach music at a college. Although there were no pianos in Yan’an at that time, Xian still wrote some of his most important music there, including The Yellow River Chorus, his most famous work.
In May 1940, Xian Xinghai went to the Soviet Union (苏联) to write music for movies. Life there was so hard that he got very sick. Later he died of a lung illness on October 30, 1945, aged only 40.
Xian Xinghai is such a great man and his music will live on in people’s hearts forever.

The Communist Youth League of China (CYLC中国共产主义青年团) was born in May 1922. It is 100 years old this year. Almost every year in May, hundreds of teenagers get together at Tuanyida Square in Guangzhou. It is the place which the CYLC was born in.
In 1932, a special school opened in a small village of Ruijin, Jiangxi. It’s the first school of the CYLC. Its first 124 students arrived in December. They were between 14 and 25 in age. They learned about history, politics (政治), geography and other skills. Every night, the students read books and newspapers. They not only learned knowledge, but also put what they learned into practice.
At that time, the young people who wanted to join the CYLC made the application form (申请书) by themselves. They needed to write why they wanted to be a CYLC member and how they would do it. Now the application form is printed in a standard form. The form might be different over time. However, the spirit of the CYLC has never changed.

When you visit a foreign country, it is important to know how to ask for help politely.
