2 . Every day, the world uses about a thousand million tons of water. Water is a human right and everyone should have their share. Yet more than 700 million people around the world have trouble getting clean, safe water.

Then desalination businesses come in. More than 19,000 factories have been built around the world, mostly in coastal(海岸的)countries. They process(加工)more than 92 million tons of salty water every day. But the technology they use requires a lot of energy.

3 . Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while—then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us develop more slowly but then become lifelong feelings, reaching deeply into both families. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be happier if we accept their hospitality(友好) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they treat us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts(主人), will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to   our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily life. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.

We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for only business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

5 . Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not so necessary , however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she does his or her best. Here are some tips to help you.

Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a plan of your time. First, design your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then, decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment(娱乐). A weekly plan may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials(资料). No games, radios, or televisions! When sitting down to study, pay enough attention to the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Be an active listener during your class. Avoid distraction. Listening carefully can help you take better notes, understand the material, and remember it at a later date.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to teach the next day, to read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be too worried.

There are other methods that might help you with your study. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

9 . How can you change negative thoughts? Many people suggest changing your attitude by thinking of something bright and happy.

However, scientists from Queen’s University in Canada said that there might be another way: by walking like a happy person.

“It is not surprising that our mood and the way we feel affects(影响)how we walk, but we want to see whether the way we move also affects how we feel,” explained Nikolaus Troje, the lead scientist, to The Independent.

Scientists believed that the way we remember emotional(令人动情的)messages is affected by our mood. Those who feel sad remember negative information far more easily than active messages, especially when the information is about them.

In order to prove this, Troje and his team used cameras to observe 47 people walking on the treadmill(跑步机). Half of the people were encouraged to mimic(模仿)a depressive walking style, while the other half moved like a happy person. Walking speed was kept equal for both groups.

During the time on the treadmill, the scientists read out a list of active and negative words, asking people to decide whether or not each word described them well. Afterwards, people were asked to recite as many of the words as they could remember.

As expected, those who had been mimicking a depressed walk remembered more negative words than those that had been walking in a happy manner.

This finding means that our walk influences the way we treat information. And the scientists believe that using a happy walking style could help with treatment for depression.

10 . The way we spend our time can be divided into three "bottles". These are the necessary tasks bottle, the voluntary tasks bottle and the happiness bottle.

Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks bottle with useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another bottle with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do for others, but we may not enjoy them. This bottle gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and washing clothes for family. Those bottles are very important. If we don't fill them each day, our family won't run properly.

However, we often forget to fill the third bottle—the happiness bottle that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness bottle sometimes empty at the end of the day? Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by, and before we know it, it is time for bed. We all have days like that.

This is why each day we have to make an effort to fill our happiness bottle. I fill mine by going to the dancing class. And I always leave classes more happily than when I enter. This week, I had the pleasure of taking part in a guitar practice in my neighborhood. We show our musical talent and practice music for charity. It was a time of fun, friendship and music-making. At the end of the evening, my happiness bottle was filled to top.

Make sure to fill all the three bottles. Will your activities bring joy to your life? Or are the other two tasks eating up all your time? Try to find ways to achieve a balance between how you fill your three bottles. At the end of the day, hopefully we've done all we can to make sure that our happiness bottle is filled.

1. Which activity belongs to a voluntary task according to the passage?
A.Making money.B.Doing housework.
C.Making more friends.D.Cooking family meals.
2. What does Paragraph Three mainly tell us?
A.Necessary and voluntary tasks are less important.
B.We need time to do something to make ourselves happy.
C.All the three bottles are filled to top at the end of the day.
D.We require enough time to fill the necessary tasks bottle.
3. How did the writer fill the happiness "bottle" this week?
A.By practicing music for charity.B.By staying with children.
C.By listening to some nice music.D.By buying delicious food.
4. What does the underlined word "balance" in the passage probably mean?
A.right directionB.same importance
C.successful experienceD.enough attention
5. What can we know from the passage?
A.Why to find more ways to get happiness.B.Why to make an effort to finish our tasks.
C.How to improve the way we spend our time.D.How to join the activities to show our talents.
