文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了中国古代的一些称谓和背后的故事。

1 . From different TV dramas or books about the ancient time, we can often hear titles (称谓) like “taoli” and “kaimo”. In fact, they are so popular that people regard them as part of ancient Chinese history and culture. What do these Chinese titles refer to? Have you ever wondered what the stories behind these ideas are?

Modesty and respect

Chinese people in the past or even sometimes today call their sons quanzi (犬子). They believe that dogs are humble (卑微的) animals. When Chinese parents use quanzi to refer to their sons, they are being modest. Although most parents do want them to be successful, they don’t usually talk about this in front of others. Instead, they try to play it down. This is similar to how even rich Chinese people call their big houses hanshe (寒舍), which means “my humble home”.

Although people are modest about themselves, they respect others a lot. They call their own sons quanzi, but call others’sons linglang (令郎), a respectful way to say “your son”.

Trees of character

In Chinese, kaimo (楷模) means “role model”. Both of these Chinese characters have a “木”on their left side. People believe that kai and mo might are two kinds of trees in ancient China. It was said that there were many kai trees growing near Confucius’ tomb (孔子墓). These trees were so straight that they made people think of Confucius’ character—straight and honest. People believed that the mo trees grew near the tomb of the Duke of Zhou (周公). The color of the mo tree’s leaves made the tree a symbol of integrity.

Since the kai and mo trees grew near the tombs of two respected people, kaimo was then used to refer to role models.

1. If Xiaoli needs to introduce his own son to others in a modest way, he may use the title “________”.

2. Which of the following about “kaimo” is NOT true?

C.We can use it to describe Confucius.D.We see it as a symbol of modesty.
3. The underlined word “integrity” probably means “________”.
A.being modest and humbleB.being successful and respectful
C.being straight and honestD.being pure and smart
4. You can infer from the passage that ________.
A.titles like “taoli” are part of Chinese traditional culture
B.trees are always a symbol of integrity
C.showing modesty and respect is important in ancient China

文章大意:本文主要介绍了淋浴的好处以及为什么有些人甚至是在淋浴时产生了有创意的想法。

2 . Taking a shower can always help relax our body. But did you know that it can also relax our mind? Some people even do their best thinking in the shower!

In a 2019 study, 87 scientists and 98 writers recorded their creative ideas each day. They also recorded what they were doing at the time. According to the results, most of their creative ideas appeared at work. But about 20 percent came when they were doing things like taking a shower or washing dishes.

Why did they get good ideas at these moments (时刻)? Well, this is called the “shower effect (效应)”. It is because of a brain pattern (模式) called the Default Mode Network (DMN,默认模式网络). It comes into play when you are relaxing or doing some simple tasks (任务). These tasks usually don’t need much thought.

“Even when you are not working on a problem, your brain still keeps working,” scientist Randy L. Buckner explained. “The DMN helps you mix things up in different ways in your mind and imagine what could happen.”

So, when you are stuck on a problem, try doing something mindless (无需动脑筋的)! Besides taking a shower, you can also do dishes or even just take a walk outside. You may come up with new ideas when you allow your mind to wander.

1. According to the “shower effect”, which of the following moment will you come up with a creative idea?
A.Sweeping the floor at home.B.Playing chess with your classmate.
C.Working on a math problem.D.Taking part in singing competition.
2. What does the underlined word “wander” probably mean in Chinese?

3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Our brain still works when we are having a rest.
B.Difficult tasks need much more thought than simple tasks.
C.Taking a shower can not only help relax our body, but also relax our mind.
D.Most of our creative ideas appeared when we are doing something mindless.
4. What is the best title for this passage?
A.How to become a creative person?B.What is the Default Mode Network?
C.Why do we think better in the shower?D.Which is the best way to relax yourself?

3 . Have you ever wondered why we say maidongxi instead of mainanbei, and shangcesuo rather than xiacesuo? These directional words in Chinese are very interesting. They are not only about giving directions but also carry a wealth of history and culture.

East/west or south/north

One theory says that in the Tang Dynasty, when shopping, people in Chang’an usually went to the East Market first, and then the West Market and these markets became more and more popular as time went by. Gradually, people started to describe shopping as maidongxi.

Left or right

In Chinese, we say yijian xiangzuo when we have different opinions. Why is it not yijian xiangyou?

Most people today are right-handed. They feel uncomfortable if they try to use their left hand to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. In ancient Chinese, “left” was related to being different, such as in yijian xiangzuo. If people don’t accept common beliefs or always use some non-traditional ways to achieve a goal or solve problems, we say they are following pangmenzuodao.

Up or down

We use shangcesuo to mean “go to the bathroom” and xiachufang to mean “go to the kitchen”. Why? In ancient times, houses were laid out in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeast of the house and the kitchen in the southeastern part. On map, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about north as shang and the south as xia. Therefore, people would say they were going “up” to the bathroom and “down” to the kitchen.

These directional words help us find our way and get a glimpse into the interesting history and culture of ancient China as well. Next time you use them, maybe you can think about the special meanings behind them and make your conversations much more fun.

1. How many popular markets were there in Chang’an in the Tang Dynasty?
A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.
2. Which is the right layout of the ancient house?
A.B.C.D.
3. In which of the following sentences can we fill the underlined phrase “get a glimpse into”?
A.It’s really fun to ________ camping outside, and we all love it so much.
B.Though you turn down our invitation, we still ________ your coming.
C.The trip to the museum made children ________ the development of science.
D.If you keep buying something expensive, you will ________ your money soon.
4. What is the best title of this passage?
A.Interesting Stories of Directional WordsB.Cultural Meanings of Directional Words
C.Main Differences of Directional WordsD.Historical Development of Directional Words

文章大意:本文是一些如何为停电做准备的建议。

9 . Electricity plays an important part in our daily life. Without electricity, people can’t work, cook, or watch TV. The traffic lights on the streets also stopped working.

Blackouts (停电) can happen at any time. So, it’s important to be prepared for a blackout. Here are a few tips for you.

◇Keep a flashlight and some batteries (电池) in every room of your home. Sure, your smartphone has a flashlight. However, if a blackout lasts for a few hours, you might want to save that phone charge for other use.

◇Keep some candles and matches, but be careful while using them. You can never be too careful with fire.

◇Keep some food that doesn’t need cooking and has a long shelf life (保质期). Canned food would work well here. Also, remember to keep some bottled water at home.

◇If your family has medicine that needs to be kept cold, make sure you have some ice packs ready. Put them along with the medicine in your fridge. When a blackout hits, only open your fridge when you need the medicine—the cold air inside escapes each time it’s opened.

◇Know your neighborhood well. During a blackout, your air conditioning (空调) will be out. Make sure you know the air-conditioned places (such as convenience stores). If it gets dangerously hot or cold, you can go there.
