1 . ①Around the world, people are more and more worried about the environment. Many people now prefer products and companies (公司) that care about the earth and cause less pollution. This need for green products has led large companies to change their business.

②Before, customers used cheap plastic bags, and then threw them away. But now most supermarkets and stores usually provide reusable shopping bags for them. This causes less waste. They also offer more local products, because less energy is needed for carrying them from one place to another.

③To help lower air pollution, big car factories are looking for other ways to control the amount of oil. Cars that use much less oil are very popular. Many companies are developing fully electric cars, too. They produce no air pollution at all. Both kinds of cars have another advantage: They are cheaper to run and people don’t need to worry about oil prices.

④The airline companies face an even greater green challenge. Airplanes use much more oil than cars. So many airlines are now developing planes that can run on some other kinds of oil. They create less pollution and cost less. The companies are also developing a new kind of planes, and some of them use only solar panels (太阳能板) to fly!

⑤Green businesses used to be popular with only a small group of people. But now, more and more companies have to show they care about the environment. Many products are marked “green” in order to look nice. However, people still have to be careful when choosing green products. It’s important to make sure the products are as environmentally friendly as the businessmen say.

2 . China sent a new X-ray astronomical satellite in space, Einstein Probe, on Jan. 9, 2024.

According to Yuan Weimin, a researcher of the satellite project, the satellite is expected to find the first light from supernova explosions (超新星爆炸) in the universe, monitor high-energy transient (瞬态) objects in the universe, which are now poorly understood by scientists.

When developing the satellite, a new generation of detection equipment (探测设备) with large fields of view and high sensitivity (灵敏度) was needed. But the important question was how to make such equipment.

Lobsters (龙虾) are a kind of sea animal which can be found around the world. Scientists discovered early on that lobsters’ eyes are different from other animals’. Lobsters’ eyes are made up of lots of tiny square tubes, pointing to the same center, which allows light from all directions to reflect in the tubes and meet on the retina (视网膜), which gives lobsters a large field of view. Scientists then simulated (模仿) the lobsters’ eyes to create a telescope to catch X-rays in space.

Through working together with other organizations, the X-ray Imaging Laboratory began the research and development work on lobster-eye X-ray imaging technology in 2010 and finally made a breakthrough.

“Thanks to the lobster-eye telescope technology, the Einstein Probe is able to monitor the poorly known soft X-ray band with a large field of view and high sensitivity,” Yuan said.

1. What is Einstein Probe?
A.A newly-found planet.
B.A newly-built space station.
C.A new X-ray astronomical satellite.
2. Why was Einstein Probe sent in space?
A.To enlarge the field of view.
B.To catch the supernova explosion.
C.To monitor the sensitivity of objects.
3. How did scientists create the telescope technology?
A.By simulating the lobsters’ eyes.
B.By observing lobsters’ movement.
C.By doing experiments on sea animals.
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The new detection equipment looked like a lobster.
B.China is the first country to send Einstein Probe into space.
C.The lobster-eye telescope technology leads to Einstein Probe’s success.

“Going for a walk” is a popular pastime (消遣,娱乐) among older and younger generations alike because of its well-known benefits for our physical and mental health. But you may be surprised to hear that walking through pretty streets or hiking along mountainous ridges have not always been considered leisure activities (休闲活动), according to Daniel Gale, a researcher of pedestrianism (徒步主义).

He says that in Britain, walking for fun “wasn’t really a thing” until the 1780s. Before that, it was just something people did when necessary, and some people even connected it with criminal activity. But for Charles Dickens, the famous English 19th Century author, walking through London streets and long distance walking around the countryside was a big part of the creative process; a time to think about what was going on around him. He walked at an impressive speed of four miles per hour, according to his biography by Peter Ackroyd.

But if speed-walking isn’t your thing, perhaps you can learn from another big-thinking wanderer—19th Century American writer Henry David Thoreau. He took a slower way, preferring to hang out over hills, fields and through the woods. He said that he could not keep his health and spirits, unless he spent four hours a day walking at least.

This idea of taking a walk to make your mind clear has continued to the 21st century, but has the etiquette of pedestrians (步行者) remained the same? An article in 1780 for the London Magazine advised pedestrians to avoid things like hanging around while talking and getting in the way of people behind you. Nowadays, we could probably add distracted (思想不集中的) phone-users to that list.

In this modern age, when many of us are tied to our desks and to our screens, the simple act of stepping out onto the city sidewalks, or getting lost in nature, may make all the difference to our well-being. Whether you see yourself more as a casual walker or a purposeful pedestrian, why not develop a habit out of it?

1. Why is going for a walk a popular pastime?

4 . In Lulea, a city in northern Sweden, people are asked to say “hello” to each other more often. The new campaign (活动) is called Sag hej! meaning “say hello”. It is a simple way to connect people, but a very big step for the city.

Swedish culture values privacy (隐私) and interpersonal distance so much that it has caused loneliness especially in Lulea where the sun only shines around three hours a day in the winter months. People usually like to stay warm at home alone. While most people believe that loneliness is the commonest among the elderly who usually live alone, the opposite is true. It is actually rising in young people and it has a bad influence on their mental and physical health. A study about Lulea found that 45% of 16-to 29-year-olds were experiencing problems because of loneliness.

Asa Koski, who works for the city, came up with the idea of the Sag hej! campaign. “The city is developing fast and more people are coming. We don’t just want Lulea to grow to be a big city. We also want it to be a safe, friendly and happy place where there’s culture, relaxing activities, and sports,” Koski said. “Greeting people makes them feel like they belong. Research shows that it has a good effect on health and makes people want to help each other. If you say hi to your neighbors, you are more likely to help them,” Koski said.

The activity is now being encouraged on buses and in schools. There are even workshops on how to greet one another. Many people agree that saying hello should be encouraged and believe that the more international the city becomes, the friendlier people will become. “It’s really good that people say hello to each other, 61-year-old Pontus Wikstrom, said.” It means that people who meet without knowing each other become a little bit happier.

1. What do we know about the people in Lulea?
A.The elderly are the loneliest.
B.Many young people live alone.
C.The cold weather makes them lonelier.
2. Koski started the campaign of Sag hej/ to ________.
A.create a better environment for people
B.encourage people to stay healthy
C.let more people know about the city
3. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Helping each other.B.Greeting people.C.Taking part in activities.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.A new campaign brings people together
B.Lonelines s has become a big problem in Lulea
C.People’s way of life in Lulea needs to be changed

5 . There are many colors in nature. But do you know if a color has weight? I think you’ll say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment.

First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the box. Third, wrap one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. OK. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.

Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colors have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind and their order is the same. The heaviest color is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white. The scientist told us that colors also have smell. Can you smell the color? Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so? That is because every color stands for a kind of light with a certain wave length. It reaches our brain through sense organs (器官).

According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. For example, if you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only an hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change with different colors.

1. The purpose of the second paragraph is to tell us ________.
A.a red box is heavier than a white one
B.a colour has weight in one’s mind
C.you can know the weight of a colour by holding it
2. Lucy wants to go to a party this weekend, what dress can she wear to make her thinner?
A.A red dress.B.An orange dress.C.A white dress.
3. Why did the scientist say colors have smell?
A.Because we can smell colors with our nose.
B.Because people can sense the light from colors.
C.Because every colour can give off light of the same length.
4. Which one is true according to the text?
A.Colors can affect our mood and health.
B.Colors can change the weight of an object.
C.People would stay longer in a room with red windows.

9 . Earthquakes usually come without warning. What should you do if this happens to you? An earthquake is dangerous, but there are still things you can do to protect yourself.

Stay calm as the earth begins to shake. Your chances of survival in an earthquake go up if you can keep calm. Staying calm is not easy, but it can save your life.

If you are inside when the earthquake starts, get under a table or a bed. You need to have something strong around you to protect you from falling objects. Do not stand near walls and windows and stay out of the kitchen. The kitchen is dangerous because of many glass objects.

If you are outside, get to an open area as fast as you can. Stay away from buildings and trees. If you are in a car, pull over to a place where there are no trees or tall buildings and stay in the car. If you are close to the sea, try to get as far away from the water as possible. Earthquakes can cause huge waves (浪) that can really harm the people nearby.
