Humans have kept animals for thousands of years. Today, kids still like to go to the zoo. But do you think it’s right to keep animals in the zoo? Come and tell us how you think! | |
Mary | People do not have a right to catch and keep other animals—even if they are endangered (濒危的). Being an endangered animal doesn’t mean fewer rights. Besides, if people want to learn about animals, they can go to the nature or go online. |
Sophia | Animals sometimes run out of their enclosures (围栏), putting themselves as well as people in danger. People getting too close to animals can also lead to something terrible. For example, a 17-year-old gorilla (大猩猩) was killed in 2016 when a kid fell into his enclosure. What a pity! |
Jackie | Zoos help endangered animals a lot. In the nature, these animals might have trouble finding mates and having babies. So many zoos have breeding programs for endangered animals. Under the zoo keepers’ help, some endangered animals even go back to the nature again after learning how to catch food. |
Li Ming | In a good zoo, the animals are never bored and they have plenty of space. People take good care of them. Zoos are also a good place to visit for a whole family. By watching the animals together, the family become close together, and it also helps to teach kids how important it is to save the animals! |

2 . There is a saying in American English, “Every dog has its day.” It means that everyone sees success at some time in their lives.
At one American museum, though, every dog has its day — every day.
That museum — American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog — returned to New York, after being open for about 30 years near St. Louis, Missouri.
Visitors to the museum will find pictures of royal and presidential (总统的) dogs and posters of dog stars such as Lassie and Beethoven. They will also find dog fossils. They can even “train” a virtual (虚拟的) dog. What’s more, there’s a library with around 15,000 books inside the museum. Visitors can read about different kinds of dogs there.
The museum first opened in New York in 1982. It moved to St. Louis in 1987. Now, the new museum, which is close to New York’s busy Grand Central Terminal, hopes to see 100,000 visitors this year.

3 . Jeff Corwin is a scientist and author. He does these jobs with one life goal: to help save animals and their habitats. His latest book, 100 Heartbeats: The Race to Save Earth’s Most Endangered Species, is a collection of stories about animals on the edge(边缘) of extinction. Corwin recently talked to TFK kid reporter Sarah Horbace.
Reporter: How would you describe your job?
Corwin: My job is to travel around, look at animals and tell their stories.
Reporter: When did you know this is what you wanted to do?
Corwin: I knew that when I was 6 years old. My dad was a police officer, and we lived in the city. I really enjoyed the time when I could go to the quiet countryside. The day that I saw my very first wild snake, I knew that’s what I would do for the rest of my life. I didn’t know if I would be a teacher or a zookeeper, but I know I would have a life connected with(与……有关) nature.
Reporter: Why did you write the book?
Corwin: We’re losing species(物种) very fast. I wanted to show people that while we are in a very serious situation, we are not at the point of no return. If we make big changes, we may have the chance to save what remains.
Reporter: Is it true that humans are the reason that many of these animals are in danger?
Corwin: Human beings have a powerful effect on every other living thing. The challenge is to make that effect a positive one.
