Learning in the Field
A fun farming class took place in the fields! On Sept 15, Grade 7 students from Jinan No.34 Middle School, Shandong, went on a field trip. They learned about farming, reported Qilu News. At the grain base (粮食基地), teachers talked about grains with students and answered their questions. The students saw millet and soybeans (小米和大豆). They touched the wheat (小麦) and learned that people usually harvest (收获) the wheat at the end of September.
Young Reporters Put on a Show at School
Students at Johnson Middle School in US, are reporting their school’s news in their own news program. The students take turns to make the program. They set up a green screen, sit down and give their classmates the headlines (新闻提要) of the day. They include (包括) what’s going on in the school and news about future events. They share the lunch menu of the day. “The kids come in excitement. They love being on the news and sharing the news with other kids. They are eager (渴望) to know what’s happening around them.” said B.J. Burke, the school teacher.

On Nov 8, students from Nanjing Foreign Language School have a special class. During the class, they have a hands-on experience of making folk clothes. The students took on the challenge (挑战) making their own bags through tie-dyeing (扎染). It is a dyeing skill to make blue calico (印花布). The dye and the cotton material (材料) used to make blue calico all come from nature. “Tie-dyeing is a magical art. Everyone does it a bit differently, and you never know exactly how it will look in the end.” said Ma Qianyu, a grade 8 student, happy with her work. The students will later go to Nanjing Museum to get more knowledge about life in Jiangsu and the folk customs there.

3 . On February 21, 2023, giant (巨大的) panda Xiang Xiang left Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo in Japan to fly back to China, her home country. Next she will be sent (送去) to Bifengxia Giant Panda Base, the homeland (家乡) of giant pandas.
Xiang Xiang was born (出生) at Ueno Zoo in June 2017. She was the child of two giant pandas Shin Shin and Ri Ri from China. She planned (计划) to come back to China at the end of December, 2020, but the plan was delayed (推迟) many times because of her popularity (受欢迎) in Japan and the COVID-19.
Now Xiang Xiang is five years and eight months old and reached her breeding maturity (繁殖成熟期). She needs to find a good husband (丈夫) and have babies in China.

7 . Remember the story called The Thirsty Crow(口渴的乌鸦)? A smart thirsty crow succeeds in getting water by dropping stones in a bottle. A piece of news in Sweden turns out the story is true.
The news says a Swedish company called Corvid Cleaning is training wild crows to pick up cigarette butts(烟蒂)from the streets of Södertälje, a city not far from Stockholm.
Trash is bad for the environment in many ways. For example, animals (both on land and in the ocean) often mistake trash for food and eat it. Sometimes they even die because of that. Cigarettes are one of the most dangerous forms of trash.
________ Through a machine. The crows are trained to put the cigarette butts into the machine. If the machine makes sure the thing is a cigarette butt after scanning(扫描)it, the crows will get food from it as a reward(回报). Sounds interesting, right?
According to Christian Günther-Hanssen, the founder of the company, with crows’ help, they don’t need to spend so much on the cigarette butts cleanup. “Crows are known to be one of the smartest animals in the world. Giant panda Ya Ya was eating bamboo during a farewell (告别) party at Memphis Zoo in the US, on April 8, 2023. She will come back to China at the end of this month. About 500 people went to the party. They said goodbye to Ya Ya, signed (签名) letters, and watched cultural shows at the party.
Ya Ya was born at Beijing Zoo in 2000. She traveled to Memphis Zoo in 2003 as part of a giant panda protection and research program (项目) between China and the US. Along with the female (雌性的) panda, the male panda Le Le also joined the program. The first plan was that the pair would come back together. Sadly, Le Le died in February.
A giant panda can live for about 15 years in the wild. Ya Ya is now old in terms of giant panda years. Although she has a skin disease (皮肤病), the panda is still in good health now.
