Miao Embroidery (刺绣) Shines at Milan Fashion Week

At Milan Fashion Week last September in Italy, people were amazed at the beautiful pictures on the models’ clothes. What were these? Italian embroidery? No. They were Chinese traditional Miao embroidery. Lots of viewers didn’t know it very well and confused (混淆) them.

About four months ago, some embroidery designers’ works were chosen to be displayed at Milan Fashion Week. Their beautiful embroidery showed the traditional artistry (工艺技术) of the Miao people. The Miao are one of China’s 56 ethnic groups (民族). Miao people have a habit of decorating clothes with beautiful pictures. They have got ideas for these pictures from nature and their ethnic history. As a result, people think that Miao embroidery is a “living fossil (活化石)” of Miao culture.

“I have never been to a foreign country, but my embroidery has,” Wang Rongbi said in excitement. Wang comes from Xiaogulong Village in Guizhou province. She is one of embroidery designers from the province.

Wang takes pride in where she comes from. In her pieces, she embroiders seals (印章) on different parts of clothes. In this way, she pays her great respect to the Siyin Miao, one branch (分支) of the Miao ethnic group. “Siyin” in Chinese means four seals.

Shi Chuanying is another Miao embroiderer from Guizhou. The 45-year-old was luckier than Wang. She had a front-row seat at the fashion week. In July, Shi received an invitation to attend Milan Fashion Week. On September 21, Shi left for Milan. She went there with two traditional costumes (服装) and ten embroidered pieces made for the catwalk.

The Miao people are happy to see the traditional costumes of their ethnic group on the international stage. This has increased their confidence in the development of Miao embroidery. “Traditional costumes can be very fashionable,” said an embroidery designer. “Hopefully, our ethnic culture has plenty of attraction from all over the world.”

The 1st Student (Youth) Games held its rock climbing competition from Nov. 8 to 11. The host Guangxi became the biggest winner in climbing, winning three golds, three silvers and one bronze (铜牌). All the medalists were from Mashan county in Nanning.

Mashan county was once poor because of its mountainous environment. But it has given the local climbers an advantage. Many students climb mountains and trees from an early age, building strong physical fitness. Among them is 15-year-old Huang Xinyi, who won the women’s speed climbing championship.

In 2017, the first “rock climbing characteristic town” in China was set up in Mashan county. “To bring the sport closer to more students, 23 primary and middle schools in the county have climbing spaces, and each school has one rock climbing class each week,” Huang Xujin, head of Mashan county’s Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Sports and Tourism, told Teens. “A group of professional climbers, including coaches from the national climbing team and excellent climbing athletes, have been hired to guide athletes in the school,” he added.

Huang Xinyi used to love climbing tees. When she was in the 5th grade of primary school, she became interested in rock climbing and decided to take part. At school, she usually trains from 6:30 to 9:00 in the evening.

For her, climbing is a window to a wider world. “Because of climbing, I stepped out of the mountains for the first time. Competing with climbers across the country helps me become a better athlete. I hope I can achieve even greater results in more countries,” she told Teens.

Mashan county has also set up a special educational pathway (路径) for children with skills in rock climbing. “Students with good rock climbing skills can directly enter the best middle school in the county,” Huang Xujin said.

Luo Yingjiu, 82, has run a small zoo in Enshi, Hubei Province on his own for 33 years.

Most of the animals in the zoo are old and weak, many of which were saved by Luo. The zoo’s lion and tiger died years ago, leaving only a bear, some monkeys, a Tibetan mastiff (藏獒), a wild boar (野猪), two raccoons (浣熊) and about 20 dogs. Luo has given names to all the animals in the zoo.

Although a ticket only costs 10 yuan per person, fewer and fewer people visit the zoo. Luo has found it much harder to run the zoo than before.

“Many people tell me to rest at this old age, but my wish is to run the zoo with all my heart until my last day,” said the former soldier. “I’m old in age, but young in mind. The zoo is my lifetime’s happiness.”

His retirement salary (退休工资) is about 5, 000 yuan per month, which is enough to lead a good life in a small place like Enshi. However, to feed these animals, he has spent all his savings and has even fallen into debt (债务).

Starting from January, Luo Wei, 22, the old man’s granddaughter, began to post short videos of him looking after these animals online. She hopes to give people a better understanding about her grandfather’s work. Some kind-hearted people sent animal feed (饲料) to the zoo after watching these touching videos. A special exhibition (展览会) titled Life Is a Song–Wan Tongshu and Xinjiang Uygur Muqam Art (木卡姆艺术) was held from August 23 to 27 in Aksu, Xinjiang.

Through objects, pictures, sounds and other forms, the exhibition was held to remember Chinese musician Wan Tongshu because he helped protect Uygur Muqam art. The exhibition was divided into two parts: “Wan Tongshu’s life story” and “Protection and inheritance of Xinjiang Uygur Muqam Art.”

Xinjiang Uygur Muqam mixes songs, dances and folk and classical music. Of these, the Twelve Muqam is known by the most people, with the largest spreading area and the most complete structure (结构).

In the thousands of years of its history, the Uygur Muqam had been passed on by word of mouth which made it difficult to be completely remembered. By the 1940s, there were very few folk artists who could sing the whole Twelve Muqam, and the art form had been brought to the danger of being lost. Government-organized protection work started in 1950. In 1951, Wan Tongshu and his wife went to Xinjiang to help with the collection of Twelve Muqam, and published the collection “Twelve Muqam”. The collection was helpful for the following research and spread. Over the years, experts and scholars (专家学者) have tried hard to protect Xinjiang Uygur Muqam together with local folk artists.

For its cultural value, Xinjiang Uygur Muqam art was included as one of UNESCO’s Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (人类口头和非物质遗产代表作) in 2005, and was listed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.
