Bob Smith, a National Teacher Award Winner

What does it take to win the hearts and minds of Grade 10 students? Ask Jenny Fitchette, Grade 10 student at Lester Pearson High, and you will get a warm reply: “The number one thing is a good teacher.”

Jenny should know this well. Look at her timetable and you will find that she is studying the usual subjects of maths, English, biology and art this term. It’s not so much the subjects that keep her coining to school each day. It’s her biology teacher, Mr. Smith, who keeps her eager and ready to learn. So Jenny recently found time to finish a 1000-word paper in which she nominated (提名)her teacher, Mr. Bob Smith for the Teacher of the Year Award. Only students may nominate someone for the award.

“I can’t really say why Mr. Smith is such a good teacher.” says Jenny. “But we always enjoy the time when Mr. Smith stays with us. I mean, the little fish really help us in our biology studies. We can actually watch the fish growing and study them in the classroom. It’s hands-on, which makes his class special. Mr. Smith always tells us that we learn best when we get in there and work with things.”

Mr. Smith says he was very surprised and honoured when he heard that Jenny had nominated him for the award. “It’s really the students who should be getting the award,” he says. “It’s my job to bring meaningful and interesting things for them to study. It’s not I, but the students who are showing excellence.”

When asked what makes his students love school so much, Mr. Smith stops and thinks deeply. I think it comes down to respect. I respect my students and I see my job as serving them in a way. I work for them to help them open up their minds and discover things that matter to them.”

Jenny says that you never know what to expect from day to day in her biology class. One day, Mr. Smith might bring his electric guitar, and for the whole class, explain and show the effects of music on plant growth. He never allows anyone any time to be lazy.

Do you ever worry about math when you’re at school? One important thing is to sit up straight when you’re taking your math exams, according to the scientists. Good posture can help people feel more positive and careful. Sportsmen, musicians and public speakers can all get advantages from good posture.

We all know air pollution is bad for our health. But it can also harm us in other ways. Scientists have found that air pollution may lead to more crimes. According to a study of 86 million peoplein the US, the worse the air pollution was, the more violent (暴力的) crime there was. Scientists think the small pieces and toxic gas (毒气) in air may affect people’s brains. This might make them more violent.

Can AI read our minds? This might not be far away. Scientists from Australia and Germany have developed a type of AI that can guess people’s feelings by tracking(跟踪) and studying their eye movements. This finding could make robots and computers better at understanding humans.

Believe it or not, sportsmen tend to have worse teeth. A study shows that half of the top athletes have tooth problems. This seems strange. The Red Cliff

We dig out broken halberds buried in the sand,

And wash and rub these relics of an ancient war.

Had the east wind refused to give a helping hand,

Southern beauties would have been captives on northern shore.

(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)

Historical poems are never just about things that happened in the past. They make people think about their own situation in the present. In this poem, for example, the poet Du Mu (803-852) used a historical story to show how upset he felt at the time, as he never had a chance to achieve his political (政治的) goals.

The story is about the Battle of the Red Cliff, one of the best-known battles of the Three Kingdoms period (220-280). In the first two lines, Du tells us that he finds a weapon (武器) buried (掩埋) deep in the sand. After cleaning it, he realizes that it’s from the Battle of the Red Cliff. Then he starts to recall the story.

“East wind” was the godsend (天赐的) wind that helped General Zhou Yu win. The wind fanned a fire that damaged Cao Cao’s fleet. If adviser Zhuge Liang had not guessed the direction of the wind, Zhou would not have won the battle. His wife and sister-in-law would be captured by Cao.

The poet admires Zhuge Liang’s important role in the battle, but also feels sad about his own situation. Du had military dreams himself, but never got a chance to show his talent.

In the hopes of having a better government, he often wrote letters to the royal court (朝廷). The letters criticized (批评) policies and military strategies (策略) of that time. However, they made little difference. About 50 years after Du’s death, the Tang Dynasty came to an end.

1. The followings are true except that   ________.
A.Du Mu wrote about the weapon and then recalled about the battle
B.Cao Cao captured Zhou’s wife and finally won the battle
C.Zhuge Liang was a great role in the battle in Du Mu’s mind
D.Du Mu’s criticism on policies and military strategies was paid little attention to
2. In the poem, which sentence stresses the need for talented people to catch the right moment?
A.We dig out broken halberds buried in the sand.
B.And wash and rub these relics of an ancient war.
C.Had the east wind refused to give a helping hand.
D.Southern beauties would have been captives on northern shore.
3. Du Mu wrote the poem in order to ________.
A.tell people about the past
B.inform others about the meaning of life
C.help people think about what they do now
D.express his feelings about his unsuccessful political life
4. We can infer from the story that ________.
A.the Tang Dynasty finally became better government after the poet’s death
B.though Zhuge Liang was a success in the battle, but he was not happy about his own situation
C.Du Mu was a man with military ambition and wanted to help the government
D.Zhuge Liang was Zhou Yu’s enemy

Scrooge was a cold, greedy, mean, old man. Scrooge and Marley were business partners for years. Scrooge was his only friend and his only mourner when Marley died. He lived in Jacob Marley’s old apartment. It was very rundown.

That evening, the fog and frost hung over the black gateway to the house. And the yard was so dark that Scrooge had to feel his way along with his hands. To his surprise, Scrooge saw Marley’s face instead of the knocker(门环)when Scrooge put his key in the lock. Scrooge looked at the door knocker for several moments, and then it changed back to being a door knocker again.

Scrooge was quite scared. He quickly closed the door and then he went up to his room. It was very dark because Scrooge only had a candle. But darkness didn’t worry Scrooge, because darkness is cheap. And Scrooge liked cheap things.

Suddenly he heard a loud clanking sound. It came from downstairs. Somebody was pulling a heavy chain over the barrels in the wine merchant’s cellar. It was coming straight towards his room.

The face was the same. It was Marley, he was dragging a chain. Scrooge stared at the ghost of Marley as it stood there before him. But still he didn’t believe it was really there.

“Who are you?” asked Scrooge, calmly.

“In life I was your partner. Jacob Marley.”

“Why are you carrying that chain?” asked Scrooge, trembling.

Scrooge was trying very hard not to be scared. The Ghosts voice scared him and its cold eyes frightened him.

“I wear the chain that I made in life,” replied the Ghost. “I made it link by link, and metre to by metre. I wound it around myself. Does it look strange to you?”

“I had the opportunity to be kind and do good in life. But I did nothing. Now I’m dead. I regret that,” cried the Ghost. “I’m here tonight to warn you. You can still escape my fate(命运). I’m giving you a chance... ”

Tea is the leaf of an evergreen shrub which grows in many parts of the world, such as China, Japan and India. The tea plant has green leaves and white flowers.
At certain seasons the young leaves are gathered. They are then dried, rolled, and packed in boxes.
