Can laughing every day help keep the heart attack (心脏病) away? Maybe so. Laughter, along with an active sense of humor, may help protect people against the heart attack, according to a recent study from the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
“The old saying that ‘Laughter is the best medicine.’ seems to be true when it comes to protecting your heart,” said Michael Miller at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
In the study, researchers compared the humor responses (反应) of 300 people. Half of them had suffered a heart attack. The other 150 did not have heart disease. Researchers provided people from the first group with a series of multiple-choice (多选的) questions to find out how much or how little they laughed in certain situations. And the second group were given true or false questions to help researchers know more about anger.
Miller said the most important study finding was that “people with heart disease responded less humorously to everyday life situations” They generally laughed less, even in positive (乐观的) situations, and they showed more anger. “We know that exercising, no smoking and eating foods low in fat will help cut down on the risk of heart disease. Perhaps hearty laughter should be added to the list.” Miller said.
It may be possible to put laughter into our daily activities, just as we do with other heart-healthy activities, such as walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift. According to Miller, every one of us is supposed to read something humorous or watch a funny video, and try to find ways to take ourselves less seriously.

3 . Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence (智力) developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. In some degree, our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no education can make a talent out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in a rich environment. Therefore, the limits (极限) of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This point of view now is held by most experts.
It is easy to show that intelligence is something that we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. If we take two strangers by chance from the population, it seems that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we compare two twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory separately where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as birth plays an important role. This conclusion(结论) is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact(接触) with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
1. How is man's intelligence given?A.At birth. | B.Through education. |
C.Both at birth and through education. | D.Neither at birth nor through education. |
A.确定 | B.修理 | C.发展 | D.安排 |

5 . We spend hours, days and years of our lives in education. But how perfect do you think your school is? Imagine you could design(设计) your ideal(理想的) school. What would it be like? We wanted to find out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is some designing from four children of different countries.
Ma, China
My dream school would have an Olympicsize swimming pool, two football pitches and a golf course. It would also have a cinema, a gym, a restaurant and a shopping centre. My school has none of these and I think there should be more enjoyable things for pupils to do while they are studying.
Sonia, Italy
I'd like a room where we can go and relax and play computer games and chat with friends. Some older pupils in the school have this but I think there should be a place for everyone to go when they want to switch off (转换注意力) from the lessons.
Richard, USA
I think it would be great to have a day off every week, as well as the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. What fun! I also think school should start later, at about 10 o'clock, and finish earlier. We spend a lot of time at school doing nothing at all. I'm sure we could learn just as much in fewer hours.
Rebecca, Australia
My dream school would be big and roomy with a computer for every person in the school. I'd also like to have a music room where we can just go and play instruments when we want. We need a recording studio, too. I hope that teachers can respect(尊重) our opinions.

Are we alone in the space? People have always wondered whether there is(or was) life on other planets. Since the 1960s, NASA has been interested in finding out more about Mars(火星). In 1975, NASA sent two spacecraft(航天器)—Viking I and Viking 2—to Mars. It took the two spacecraft a year to land on Mars. The spacecraft sent pictures back to the Earth from the surface of the planet.
In 2001, NASA sent another spacecraft named Odyssey to Mars. Odyssey entered the orbit(轨道) of Mars on October 24, 2001. The spacecraft flew around the planet and sent pictures back to NASA scientists. Odyssey found that Mars has ice under its surface. That indicates that Mars used to have lakes and rivers. If there was water, there might also have been life.
On November 26, 2011, NASA sent another spacecraft called Curiosity to Mars. It landed on Mars on August 5, 2012. Curiosity's job is to check whether there has ever been life on Mars and study more about the planet. Curiosity has many instruments to help it complete its job. Since landing on the planet, Curiosity has sent a lot of information to NASA scientists. They now have further information to support the idea that there could have been life on Mars in the past.
NASA sent another spacecraft to Mars in July, 2020. The new spacecraft has better instruments to help it search for signs of Martian life. By 2020, NASA scientists hope finally answer the question—________.

9 . Rain was beating heavily against the window. I was trying to read but the sound was too loud. Anger filled my heart little by little. I wanted to be outside playing, but the rain was keeping me inside.
My mom had gone to the supermarket, and my dad was spending Saturday at the office. I had planned to spend the day hiking(徒步旅行), but Mother Nature decided that today was the perfect day for rain.
It meant I would have to find something to do. I spent most of the morning playing with my pet dog and reading. I was sitting next to the window looking out when I got a strange idea: why not go outside anyway?
I put on a big raincoat and stepped out into the wet world. It was raining hard but it wasn't cold. All I could hear were raindrops and the wind. I decided to go on my hike anyway.
I walked to the forest. My feet didn't make any sound on the wet ground and the forest seemed different. I went to my favorite place and sat down. In the summer, my best friend Ellen and I would come here and sit for hours. Suddenly, I heard someone calling me. I turned and saw Ellen walking up behind me.
"Oh! It's really you, Tina!" she said. "I can't believe that you are out here right now. I thought I would be the only person crazy enough to go for a walk in the rain."
I was very happy to have some company. We thought that hiking in the rain was just as fun as hiking in the sunshine. We planned to hike in the rain again.
