1 . People get truly happy and successful by trying to be themselves. Not on the outside—on the inside. It’s not about a brand(品牌)or a character. It’s about truth. Who you really are. It sounds simple, I know. The problem is , it’s very hard to do, it takes a lot of work, and it can take a lifetime to understand who you are.

Nothing worth doing in life is ever easy. If you want to do great work, it’s going to take a lot of hard work to do it. And you’re going to have to break out of your comfort zone(舒适区).

But you know, you can’t think of a better way to spend your life. I mean, what’s life for if not finding yourself and trying to become the best, the truest version(版本)of you that you can be?

That’s what Steve Jobs meant when he said this in a speech at Stanford University:

Your time is limited(有限的), so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don`t let the noise of others ‘opinions drown out your own inner voice. You have to trust that the points will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something—your heart, luck, life, whatever. This way has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.

Not only that, but what Jobs was talking about and what I’m talking about require focus and hard work, two things that are very hard to come by these days. Unless you take on the challenge and start up the road to self-discovery, or nothing will be achieved. Whatever you might discover, all you have to do is to start the journey.

2 . Welcome to Stuart’s Fruit Farm! This is a family-run farm in New York. Here you can pick fresh fruits along with your friends and families!

Seasonal directions

Mid-June-July

In mid-June, the fruit picking begins. Over nine acres (英亩) of cherries (樱桃) provide plenty of picking chances for everyone! Someone will take you from the parking lot up the hill to the cherries.

We grow three different kinds of sweet cherries. Our dark cherries are large and very sweet. The light cherries are large with golden yellow skin.

July-August

Yellow and white peaches (桃) come from about the last weekend of July and into August. We grow many types of peaches. Our white peaches are very sweet and loved by everyone. We have 12 acres of peaches, so there is enough for everyone to pick as many as they want!

September-October

As warm summer days give way to cool fall days, apples begin to appear. There are 15 acres of apples at Stuart’s Fruit Farm. With modern technology, we make apple trees grow short enough. This means that even the youngest children can reach for and pick their own apples.

3 . Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry.” This phrase has become such a common response(反应)that it has taken on a lot of meanings.

Saying “Sorry” means to apologize(道歉). This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.

But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man knocks into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.

It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy fight. So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.

Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter, “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, sorry doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.

5 . Traveling came naturally to me as part of family hobbies, and it was one of many good habits my father ever helped me develop when I was young. One old photo reminded me of a family trip in my early childhood.

It was a weekend in spring, my family went for mountain climbing. Though a little fat girl at that time, I enjoyed climbing mountains a lot. We started at six in the morning, took a rest every one hour or so. On our way up, my father told me to hold the breath and make it until the last moment. The last hundreds of stairs would be the most difficult. I was really tired, my legs couldn’t stand well, and the top of the mountain seemed so far away.

I just wanted to sit down and give up the climbing, and again my father said to me, “Look down the hill, it is just like a picture!” I suddenly noticed the beautiful view alongside was perfect. It was the time when you were in full communication with nature and all the tiredness seemed worth. We cheered each other up by chatting or singing, until we finally reached the top after five or six hours.

There’s actually no meaning in traveling; traveling is among the experiences adding joy to your way of life already there. So just enjoy it, body and soul.

1. Who helped the writer develop good habits?
A.A fat girl.B.Her family.C.Her teacher.D.Her father.
2. How did they spend the last difficult time of the climbing?
A.They slept for plenty of time.
B.They took a rest every one hour or so.
C.They cheered each other up by chatting or singing.
D.They held the breath and made it until the last moment.
3. What’s the best title for this passage?
A.How to develop good habits.B.Enjoy traveling, enjoy your life.
C.How to deal with difficulties.D.Beautiful nature, beautiful picture.

6 . When you spend three weeks reading a book, and a month later somebody asks you about it and you can’t remember anything you read. What’s your feeling? It makes you wonder why you wasted time on it.

There are some effective (有效的) ways to learn. And when I say “to learn effectively”, what I mean is to not just build up knowledge, but to be able to use that knowledge effectively. So I say, most of the courses people spend money on is not learning. Something is not truly learned until it changes you in some way.

●Memory is based on (基于) connections

One of my favorite online book clubs is Mentor Box. The club will send you books to read and study materials related (联系) to them. The materials can help you put what you’ve learnt into good use and make you remember things quickly.

You can do this on your own. When you read something useful, write down its connections with something in your life—how you can use the idea, how it can help with your problems, etc.

●Read in a right way

People believe they have to read everything, line by line, one after another. This is not true. When you buy a book, you’re not buying the words, you’re buying the useful ideas. The point of a book is the information that is important to you. What matters is the key idea. Once you’ve received that idea, there’s no reason to feel obligated to sit there and read the rest.

●Ask the right questions

Everything you read should be questioned. You can question the writer’s ideas, whether they’re explaining information correctly. When reading something you agree with, you can ask yourself, “Is it possible that this could be wrong?” Asking the right questions will decide the depth of your knowledge and understanding, not the ability to remember a lot of facts and numbers.

1. According to the writer, effective learning ________.
A.is spending a long time reading a book
B.helps you get a good feeling after reading
C.happens when knowledge changes you in some way
D.is the main purpose of the courses people spend money on
2. What does the writer suggest when we want to remember something?
A.Joining our favorite online book club.B.Always writing down somethings useful.
C.Studying the reading materials carefully.D.Building connections between books and our life.

A.have critical spiritB.remember the details well
C.find the information quicklyD.use the knowledge effectively
4. What does the underlined word “obligated” mean?
A.worriedB.forcedC.relaxedD.surprised
5. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Become A Better LearnerB.How to Remember Things Effectively
C.Ways of Building Connections in Your LifeD.The Importance of Asking the Right Questions

7 . Everyone gets sick of hearing. “Put on your seat belt!”But it’s good advice. People who wear seat belts are 45 percent less likely to be killed while riding in the front seat of a car.

The US government wants more seat belt laws. It says children aged 4 to 15 are often killed in car accidents. In 2005, there were 1,627 children aged 4 to 15 killed in car accidents. More than 1,000 of those children were not wearing seat belts. If they had been wearing seat belts, 500 of those children could be alive today.

These children are too old to be in car seats, but they often sit in the back seat. Seat belt laws in many states, including Wisconsin, only require people in the front seat to wear seat belts. Children who aren’t wearing seat belts can be thrown from the car. The risk of dying in an accident is three times greater if the person is thrown from the car.

New laws could require children aged 4 to 8 to be in booster seats in the car. Booster seats help seat belts fit children properly. Right now, only 5 percent of children aged 4 to 8 are seated in booster seats (儿童座椅).

While parents have the choice of whether wearing seat belts or not, children are too young to make that choice. Even if you decide not to wear a seat belt, make sure your children are in seat belts and car seats. It’s the law and it will save their lives.

1. The underlined sentence “Everyone gets sick of hearing”in the first paragraph means“________”.
A.there is something wrong with everyone’s ears
B.all people fall ill when they hear something
C.many people don’t pay attention to wearing seat belts
D.none of the people knows it is a piece of good advice
2. More than two-third of 1,627 children were killed because ________.
A.they weren’t using seat belts
B.they were too careful when they walked on the road
C.they were not old enough to sit in the car
D.they wore seat belts
3. You must get your children to put on seat belts in order to ________.
A.keep them comfortable in the car seat
B.keep them safe
C.keep them awake in the car all the time
D.prevent all kinds of traffic accidents
4. What would be the best title of this passage?________
A.Children Should Put on Seat Belts
B.Too Many Traffic Accidents Happened Recently

8 . Everybody wants to succeed, but how can we be successful? We must keep working hard to achieve our goals and it always begins first with a baby step. Why do we call them baby steps?

Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith (信念). We see others stepping out and we want to show our ability to walk by following them. As we grow, we continue our development by taking extra (额外的) baby steps. Sometimes we fall; sometimes we fail. After that, all steps become an act of faith; we just become more practiced. If you say to yourself “I don’t want to make a fool of myself” or “I’d better be good at this”, you’ll probably never take the baby steps towards your goals and end up lying in your own self-pity.

As a culture, we focus on results. We think about every risk that must be taken to reach our goals. There are few people who are excellent performers of any tasks the first time they try them. They practice their skills and use their talents through baby steps before they are ready to prove (证明) them to the whole world.

So, take those baby steps to reach the goals. As you become more experienced, your baby steps become a walk, then a jump, and finally a sprint. That’s how our baby steps lead us through the marathon (马拉松) of life.

1. What does the writer mainly discuss in the passage?
A.The importance of baby steps.B.The power of faith in our life.
C.The abilities to achieve success.D.The cause of cultural differences.
2. Which of the following is the most important in taking baby steps?
A.Aim.B.Support.C.Faith.D.Practice.
3. What does the writer want to express in the third paragraph?
A.We can’t expect to succeed without working hard at first.
B.Adults should learn from babies in dealing with hard tasks.
C.We must make full use of our skills in order to get rewards.
D.Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith.
4. What does the underlined word “sprint” probably mean?
A.Long jump.B.Sudden stop.C.Hard climb.D.Fast run.
5. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Life GoalsB.Baby StepsC.How to SucceedD.Practice Makes Perfect

9 . As populations keep increasing in cities, city planners look under their feet for answers. With space in cities so limited, often the only choice for those who can afford to expand their property is to go underground.

One idea, which hasn’t been realized yet, is the ‘Earthscraper’ mentioned for Mexico City. This 65-storey inverted (倒置的) pyramid has been suggested as a way to provide office, shopping and living space without having to tear down the city’s historic buildings or break its 8-storey height requirement.

Many questions remain to be discussed, however, such as how you provide light, remove waste and protect people from fire or floods. Some of them have been answered with the construction (建设) of the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel in China. This 336-room resort was built into the rock face of an 88m-deep, disused quarry (采石场) .

The island city-state of Singapore is also exploring its underground choices. Not only are its Jurong Rock Caverns being turned into an underground storage facility (装备) for the nation’s oil reserves, but there are also plans to build an ‘Underground Science City’ for 4,200 scientists to carry out research.

In New York, the Lowline Project is turning a disused subway station into a park. Expected to open in 2021, it uses a system of above-ground light-collection dishes to provide enough light to grow plants, trees and grass.

1. What’s the reason for people to explore the underground space?
A.People who explore the underground space can afford to expand their property.
B.Scientists have new discoveries when they are exploring the underground space.
C.The population in cities is growing and the space in cities is too small to live in.
D.People explore the underground space because they want new places to live in.
2. Which is NOT the requirement of the buildings in Mexico?
A.People cannot tear down the city’s historic buildings.
B.People should have enough living space in the city.
C.People can have buildings over the height of 65 storeys.
D.People should have buildings within the height requirement.
3. What does the word “them” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.questionsB.light and wasteC.peopleD.fire or floods
4. What can you infer from Paragraph 4?
A.Singapore is building Jurong Rock Caverns and Underground Science City.
B.Singapore is planning its underground buildings because of its small size.
C.Singaporean scientists like underground buildings very much.
D.Jurong Rock Caverns is built to satisfy people’s shopping needs.
5. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Cities are building wonderful hotels like Shanghai.
B.Cities are suffering from many problems.
C.Underground cities can grow plants and trees.
D.Underground cities will be the choice of future.

10 . British and American culture has the same source(源头) between the two countries. They have common historical background of education. Education in the United States carried on the ancient tradition of education in Europe, but developed to its own characteristics(特点). So the difference between the two counties is still very large.

USA

There is no general educational system(系统) in the USA — instead, each of the 50 states has its own system.

In most states, however, children go to school from about the age of six until at least age sixteen. Each year of school is called “grade”. All American students must successfully complete 12th Grade.

Generally speaking, a student attends seven years of primary(小学) education, which is often divided into four years of Elementary(初级的) school(Grade 1-4) and three years of Middle school(Grades 5-7). This is followed by secondary school, which is Junior High(Grades 8-9) and Senior High(Grades 10-12).

After finishing Senior High, if they choose to continue learning, they can then go on to higher education at college or university.

UK

In the UK, all children must go to school from age five to age sixteen. They go to primary school for seven years and secondary school for five years.

Primary school may be divided into Infant(幼儿) school (3 years) and Junior school (4 years). There are different kinds of secondary schools, but all pupils follow the same national curriculum.

After age 16, British students can choose to leave school, or — if their school results are good enough — they can go on to attend Sixth Form for a further two years. At the end of this time, they take “A” (Advanced) Level exams to go to college or university.

1. Why are there many similar points between British and American education?
