4 . When I was 5 years old, I lived with my family in my Grandma’s old house. It was very old and not in great shape, but we were happy there. We didn’t have a lot of money, but we grew our own food and made our own clothes. Every day after school, I would play outside and wait for my dad to come home from work. He worked hard all day and would come home tired with oil on his hands and clothes.
When he got home, he would clean up and sit in his old chair while my mom and Grandma were making dinner. I loved climbing onto his back and watching TV together. His hands were rough and strong, and I always felt safe and loved.
Now I am 55 years old and the oldest person in my family. I have wrinkles (皱纹) and some health problems, but I still remember those happy times with my dad. I wish I could go back and sit with him in that old chair one more time, just to tell him how much I love him and thank him for making me feel so happy and loved as a child.

5 . In your spare time, do you help your parents with chores around the house? Can you cook for your family?
In order to stress (强调) the importance of hard-working spirit education (劳动教育) among students of different ages, the government made a guideline (指导方针).
The guideline calls for students to respect labor work. Students should learn life skills and develop good working habits through such education.
The government has been trying to stress the importance of hard-working spirit education. But this has been overlooked (忽视) in recent years. Many teenagers don’t think working hard is important and aren’t interested in doing so. According to a study, only 22% of students help with everyday chores around the house.
“Families and schools play an important role in teaching students about the advantages of working hard,” the guideline says.
As children’s first teachers, parents could encourage children to learn how to do chores at home. Students should learn one or two life skills every year. These skills can include cooking, washing their own clothes, and tidying their rooms.
Schools should provide students with hard-working spirit classes every week, according to the guideline. Schools can also hold activities to give students real-world work experience.

7 . According to a new research, kids can improve their brainpower by cooking, gardening and cleaning around the house.
It’s a study of 207 children. Scientists have found that housework like making meals and caring for plants had something to do with planning, self-controlling and remembering things.
Collected from children aged 5 to 13 in mid-2020, the results showed 86 percent of kids put their dirty clothes in the right place and cleaned up after playing. But only 59 percent made their own beds, just 26 percent sorted clothes after washing and 10 percent helped cooking.
Older children are more likely to do housework than younger ones. Girls do more housework than boys. For example, only 49 percent of boys but 70 percent of girls made their own beds. Around 60 percent of kids, including 50 percent of boys and 61 percent of girls, helped do the dishes. Only 34 percent of kids aged five to seven did this, but 64 percent of those aged 11 to 13 helped.
“Children who often cook a family meal may be more likely to be good at other ways of life-like schoolwork or problem-solving,” the lead researcher of the study, Ms. Tepper said.

They don’t like getting up early. They do chores, too. Grace sweeps the floor and waters the plants. Sometimes she helps me take the clothes out of the washing machine and hang (挂) them out. Tom feeds our dogs, brushes them and takes them for walks. The dogs love Tom and he’s very patient (有耐心的) with them. He also takes out the rubbish in the evening. He doesn’t like this job!
