Can you cook by yourself? Do you like the homework of making a meal? These days, primary and middle school students are required to take the Practical Activity Class (实践活动课) at least one class hour every week. The topic of cooking is discussed mostly by parents and students. Learning practical skills plays an important role in shaping a person’s character for sure. Here are some students’ views and gains.

The tasks are common and simple in daily life, such as sweeping the floor, washing cups and cooking food. On holidays like Mother’s Day, students should prepare presents for their mothers. Huang Yixi, 14, has learned several life skills, including cooking. “I used to be afraid of fire.” she said. But she managed to overcome her fear and complete her cooking task. At the same time, she also learned how tired her mother gets after doing housework every day. Zhang Li, a 12-year-old boy from Sichuan, used to be lazy. He hardly did any housework. But now, things have changed. Washing dishes, cooking and making the bed…all of these have become part of his daily life.

This big change is the result of a new program at his school. Starting from last term, his school has made housework part of the students’ homework in order to improve their life skills.

At the beginning of each month, every student gets a list of housework to do every weekend. Their parents help keep an eye on their performance. They can do housework, such as cleaning out closets, washing cups and cooking food. On holidays like Mother’s Day, students are asked to prepare gifts for their mothers.

Wang Dan, 13, has learned several life skills through the program, including cooking. “I used to be afraid of fire,” she said. But she tried to overcome (克服) her fear and complete her cooking tasks.

At the same time, she also learned how tired her mother is after doing housework every day. On Mother’s Day, she made a cake for her mother to show her thanks. “I’ve begun to better understand my parents and want to help them more,” she said.

Other schools in Sichuan are also developing programs to teach their students life skills. On May 2, another middle school held a life skill competition. Students had to complete many tasks, including cooking and folding clothes. They showed their skills and proved (证明) that they are growing up.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了劳动教育。

4 . Do you often put down your phones and pads and pick up spatulas (锅铲) and brooms (扫帚)?

Labor education will become an important part of schooling. According to the new curriculum (课程) standard, primary and middle school students in China will find a new “practical activities” course in their schedule, with at least one class every week. The new course has three types of tasks: everyday chores (家务活), including cleaning, organizing, and cooking; productive labor, including traditional handicrafts (手工艺品) and experience of new technologies, such as 3D printing; and volunteer work.

Take cooking as an example. The first and second graders will be encouraged to take on basic tasks such as washing vegetables. The third and fourth graders will be taught to make some cold dishes and boil eggs. Students in the fifth grade will learn to cook two to three quick and easy dishes. Middle school students will be required to learn to cook three to four main dishes independently for lunch or dinner.

There are many benefits (益处) of learning cooking as a skill. As you learn to cook, you are getting a powerful tool to take control of your own health. You can also create lots of great memories in the kitchen, and feel a sense of achievement. More importantly, learning to cook prepares you for the future. If you can cook, you are able to live a healthier and more independent life.

Parents welcome the cooking courses with open arms. They believe that the courses will provide their children with a chance to experience life and develop necessary skills.

When cooking is about to become a compulsory (必修的) course, the kitchen safety is more important than labor skills.

Dear Sir,

I’m a Grade 8 student from No.1 Middle School. I began to help out with chores when I was in primary school. I think it’s very important for teenagers to do so, because teenagers these days need all-round development. We can learn a lot of living skills by doing chores. I live in the dormitory (宿舍) at school now. Those skills help me take good care of myself.

When I come back home on weekends, I always help my parents if they need my help. And I can not only cook the food I like, but also make a big meal for my parents.

I believe that doing chores helps to develop children’s independence.

Yours,

Nancy

文章大意:本文主要介绍孩子是否应该为做家务得到报酬。
8 . 请阅读下面短文,根据语篇内容,在方框内的缩写文章中,填入与短文意思最符合的单词。每空一词

Many kids do housework such as doing the dishes, making the bed, and folding the clothes. In return, they get some money or other computer time from their parents.

Paying kids for housework is one of the most popular topics, especially at a time when everyone is more careful about money. Some parents think we should pay kids for everyday housework because adults (成年人) are paid to do their jobs.

But some people don’t think kids should get rewards (报酬) for doing housework. Susie Walton, an expert, completely agrees. She believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't their job unless you get something in return. “Doing housework is a teamwork,” Walton said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to understand that everyone is fair in the house and we all have responsibilities (责任). Family members decide how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it clean and tidy.”

Other people believe that getting a reward encourages (鼓励) kids to do housework, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to get money. There are also apps that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed (兑现) either online or in the real world. “Our goal is to give kids lawful power so they can get rewards,” says Chris Bergman. “And kids need rewards to make them keep on doing housework.”

Should parents pay kids for doing housework? It is one of the most     1     topics. Some parents think they should pay kids some money or other computer time for everyday housework.     2     adults are paid to do their jobs. But some people don't think so.

An expert named Susie Walton     3     disagrees paying kids for housework. She thinks a home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to understand the idea of     4     and responsibility. Everyone in the house should do their part in keeping it clean and tidy. Others believe getting a reward can encourage kids to do housework. It also     5     them real world lessons. As Chris Bergman says, “Kids need rewards to make them keep on doing housework.”

Labor (劳动) education has become more and more important in recent years. It is very close to our lives.

As students, doing housework is really helpful for us. But some people think that students only need to study hard and should not waste time doing housework. I think this idea is wrong. Here are my reasons.

First, teachers often ask students to clean the classroom at school. This is because what the school teaches is not only knowledge (知识), but also how to adapt to (适应) society. The same is true for the family. Doing housework shows duty towards the family.

Second, doing housework can help us develop a hard-working spirit and help us learn some labor skills. In the future, these will be helpful to us.

Finally, the purpose (目的) of getting knowledge is to learn the skills we will need in the future. The more skills students have, the better they will be. No one wants to be useless in the society.

President Xi Jinping once said, “The people’s life lies in hard work, and hard work leads to prosperity (繁荣).” The same is true for students. Labor education is also the first test for students to enter society.
