When I was a little girl, my mom used to cook dinner for my dad and me.
One night, she cooked dinner for us after a long, hard day at work. Maybe because she was too tired, the food she cooked wasn’t so good. She placed a plate of eggs and burned toast (烤面包片) in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! But all my dad did was to pick up his toast, smile at my mom, and ask me how my day was at school. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him put butter (黄油) on that toast and eat it up! When I got up from the table that evening, I heard my mom say sorry to my dad for burning the toast. And I’ll never forget what he said, “Baby, I love burned toast.”
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night, and I asked him if he really liked the burned toast. He said, “Debbie, your mom had a hard day at work today and she’s really tired. Burned toast never hurts anyone. You know, life isn’t always perfect.”
