Bob and Mary from NO.3 Middle School give up several hours each week to help others.

Bob loves animals and wants to be an animal doctor. He volunteers at an animal hospital every Saturday morning. Mario believes it can help him to get his future dream job. “It’s hard work,” he says, “but I want to learn more about how to care for animals. I feel satisfied when I see the animals get better and the look of joy on their owners’ faces.

Mary is a book lover. She could read by herself at the age of four. Last year, she decided to try out for a volunteer after-school reading program. She still works there once a week to help kids learn to read. “The kids are sitting in the library, but you can see in their eyes that they’re going on a different journey with each new book. Volunteering here is a dream come true for me. I can do what I love to do and help others at the same time.

The year 2020 is unforgettable (难忘的) for everyone. We are at home for     1     long time because of the COVID-19 (新冠肺炎). But many people still go out     2     (help) people in need. Zhong Nanshan is one of     3     (they). This year, we can always hear his name on TV and on the radio. On August 11th (共和国勋章) to thank him for his hard work.

One Sunday morning, I took my dog Ben to the park to have a walk. Reaching the end of one street, Ben pulled (拉) me into a garden (花园) with lots of colorful flowers. At first, I tried to pull Ben back to the street, feeling worried that there might be something dangerous inside the garden. However, every time I tried to get Ben out of the garden, he pulled harder. Then I decided to follow Ben in.

Several minutes later, I heard some sounds. Then I followed the sounds to a vegetable patch (一块菜地). A group of people were busy with all kinds of work there. I asked them who the owner of the garden was. To my surprise, they all shook their heads. In the end, they told me it was a community garden and they were all volunteers. They come to help every Sunday morning to make sure everything is growing well in the garden. The following Sunday morning, I didn’t give Ben a walk. I had a new plan. I would go to volunteer in the community garden.

It has been one year since (自从) my first visit to the garden. I still love coming back every Sunday morning to get my hands dirty. It is not easy work, but I feel very happy seeing everything in the garden grow well.

Two students in the UK     1     to do some volunteer work during the school holidays. They wrote the following reports.

Mark: There are many homeless children. My mother and I visited nine of these children. We played     2     with them and taught them to tell stories.
