1 . About 38,500 kinds of animals in the world are in danger. Now, you can learn about them and help them by playing a card game.
Jackson Mann is 15 years old. He is the starter of the card game called “SOS: Save Our Species (物种)”. He hopes that people can do something for endangered (濒危的) species after playing the game.
In the game, players need to collect endangered species and match (匹配) them with their right habitats (栖息地). The more endangered the species are, the more points (得分) players can get. The game finishes when there are no more cards. And the player with the most points wins the game.
Jackson had the idea for the game on a family trip to Central America three years ago. “We saw lots of wildlife and played lots of card games,” said Jackson. “I thought that it would be great if people could play cards and learn about endangered species at the same time.”
Jackson’s card games began to sell from July 8, 2022. So far, he has made over £11,700 to help save animals in danger.

Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) are not only social animals living in communities and work together, but they are smart in many different ways. People have been studying chimps both in the wild and in captivity (圈养) for over 40 years.
In 1960, a researcher named Jane Goodall began to live with and study wild chimpanzees in Africa. She learned that they are highly intelligent animals that communicate with gestures and physical contact. They make tools to find food and they make choices about which groups to join and what foods to eat. In captivity, where they live in zoos and science centers, they can be found in 21 different African countries, living in forests. Chimpanzees are able to adapt (适应) to changes in their environment. They can move to a new place, make new nests, and find new foods. There have even been experiments which show that a few chimpanzees have learned to use computers and to play games! Some scientists argue that chimpanzees can show emotions such as happiness or sadness.
Although chimpanzees are impressive and intelligent animals, they are in danger now and people are destroying their natural habitats. By cutting down trees for firewood and using the space to build houses, humans leave chimpanzees with smaller areas to live in. Fortunately many organizations and researchers have started to take steps to protect them. Everyone should be aware of their work and it is important to help these amazing animals.
1. How long have people been studying chimpanzees both in the wild and in captivity?2. What did the researcher, Jane Goodall, learn about chimpanzees?
3. How do chimpanzees adapt to changes in their environment?
4. Have all chimpanzees learned to use computers or to play games?
5. According to the passage, why should everyone help chimpanzees?
A crested ibis (朱鹮) is a white bird with a red head. East Asia is its only home. People thought they had already died out in China in the 1970s.
At the same time crested ibises, which are regarded as the national bird in Japan, were also on their way to dying out. Their population was going down sharply. So Japan set up the first ibis protection centre in Asia in 1967. Still the last Japanese crested ibis died in 2003.
In 1982 some farmers in Yangxian, Shaanxi reported to the local government they had seen a few white birds with red head. Bird experts (专家) hurried to Yangxian. They carefully compared the birds with the pictures they brought from Beijing Zoo. To their excitement, these big white birds were really crested ibises.
This news brought excitement to the world. Japan first sent a group of bird experts to help China study and protect the endangered (濒危的) birds. After careful study, they believed there were altogether seven crested ibises in China in the early 1980s.
China set up its ibis protection area in 1983. This has played the key role in increasing the population of ibises. In the late 1980s, ibises largely stayed away from dying out. Later, China began to give crested ibises to Japan and Korea as national gifts. Now there are all together more than 2000 crested ibises in China and its wild population has reached 1500.

4 . Sunshine, beaches and coconuts (椰子) —these are why people usually go to Hainan. But more than a good place for travelers and foodies, it’s also a wonderland of plants and animals.
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park in the south-central part of Hainan Island, has the most and well-kept tropical rain forests in China. President Xi Jinping visited it in April, 2023. The national park covers 4, 269 square kilometers, or one-seventh of the island. More than 95percent of the park is virgin (原始的) forest and is home to 3,653 species (种类) of vascular plants and 540 species of terrestrial vertebrates.
The park is the only home of the world’s most endangered primate (灵长类动物)—the Hainan gibbon. It’s an uncommon species. They look like monkeys, but have no tails. They live in the trees their whole life. Every morning, they whistle loudly to mark their territory (领地) . They eat fruits and leaves from more than 130 plants. The number of Hainan gibbons has become larger from fewer than 10 in the 1980s to 36 in 2022. This shows China’s achievements in environmental protection.
Not just a sweet home to animals, the park is a “live museum” of amazing plants. More than 400 kinds of plants grow only in Hainan. Cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) is a wild plant native to the island. With feather-like leaves, this plant can live to be 200 years old. If it lives in the Yangtze River Basin and North China, it grows almost without flowers or fruit. But in Hainan, cycas hainanensis plants over 10 years old blossom (开花) and have fruit almost every year, thanks to the warm and wet weather.
With so many plants and animals, the biodiversity index (指数) of the park—a number to rate species diversity—is as high as 6.28. It is comparable (可比较的) to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. That’s why people call the park a treasure for both China and the world.

Construction Workers Every November, near the start of summer in Antarctica (南极洲), chinstrap penguins begin an activity you see in a lot of cities. Pairs of chinstrap penguins use stones to build nests (巢). Like houses in many human neighborhoods, the nests are built side by side for safety. Rock Stars Known as Fiordland penguins, these birds don’t live in Antarctica but the rain forests of New Zealand. They are also known for their funny looks and sounds of singing that can be easily noticed. The birds can shake their crests (冠) —like rock stars shake their hair on the stage—to show off their plumage (羽毛) to interest mates. Parents in Turn A mother emperor penguin lays one egg then leaves! Each penguin’s father covers it with his brood pouch (育儿袋). There the father stands, for about 65 days, through icy temperatures and cold winds. Finally, the mothers return and feed the hatched (孵化的) baby penguins. The fathers then leave for fishing, and the mothers take care of the babies. |
