1 . Every year, between 100 million and 1, 000 million birds die from crashing into buildings, especially windows. When hearing the news, you may feel sad. Scientists have come up with a simple idea that could help save birds: Turn off the lights.
In the fall, more than 8, 000 million birds migrate (迁徙) from North America to warmer places. During daylight hours, glass reflects (反射) the outside world. That makes the birds think what they see is the real world. At night, the bright lights in tall buildings look like stars. That makes the birds mistake them for stars that show them the way. These finally result in birds crashing into windows and losing their lives.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology (the study of birds) advises producing man-made lights as little as possible during the migration season. They advise turning off lights outside that are not important to your life and turning off or dimming lights inside.
In 1999, the National Audubon Society which protects birds, began the Lights Out Network. It is a national action to provide safe airspace for migrating birds. Now some big US cities, like Dallas, Philadelphia and New York, turn off the lights at night to protect birds. If we pull together to protect birds, they will have a better living environment.

2 . There are many places to see lovely pandas in China. But where is the best place to go for a special trip? When is the best time to go?
The best place to see and hug pandas is in Chengdu. Visitors can also take part in volunteer to take care of pandas. If you just want to see pandas, we advise you to go to Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Base (基地). You can see pandas at different ages, from the oldest to the newborns. This base is huge but usually crowded. If you want to experience more, consider (考虑) a one-day volunteer program at Dujiangyan Panda Base, or longer programs in Wolong Panda Center and Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base.
Pandas don’t hibernate, so you can visit them in all four seasons. Spring and autumn are the best times to see pandas when they are the most active and temperatures are the most comfortable. But if you visit between August and November, you will probably see lovely panda babies. Pandas spend almost half their days sleeping. So if you want to see them walking or climbing, it’s important to know their rest time. They usually sleep around noon, any time from around 10:00 am to around 2:00 pm. We suggest you get to a panda base as early as possible (8:00 to 10:00 am is the best), because it is less-crowded and the pandas are at their most active.

3 . A harbor seal (斑海豹) was recently seen in the waters near Sanya, Hainan Province. Since it was first seen near Wuzhizhou Island, divers (潜水人员) have come across it several times and filmed it swimming in the sea or resting on the water surface.
Harbor seals mainly swim by using the back of their body. They love diving and can make more than 30 dives a day. They can dive as deep as 300 meters and stay underwater for over 20 minutes. When swimming on the surface, harbor seals can achieve speeds of up to 27 kilometers an hour. However, harbor seals look silly and cute on land because they can only use their upper body to move. They are loved by many people and are called “sea pandas”.
Wang Aimin, an expert in the Wuzhizhou Island Marine Ranch National Demonstration Zone, said, “The recent survey shows that the number of fish in this area has doubled over the past ten years. It shows the environment here is more suitable for living, which may draw the lovely guest.”
Someone said online, “Animals are the most important part of life on earth. If we humans destroy animals’ homes, we hurt animals, and we hurt ourselves.”

7 . To fight against climate change, scientists have suggested whales as a solution. It turns out that whales are excellent at controlling CO₂.
Whales remove (清除) CO₂ from the air in two ways. First, they move nutrients (养分) from their eating areas deep in the ocean back to the surface, where they let go of them in their waste. Those nutrients help the growth of plants which take in CO₂ from the air. Second, whales themselves collect CO₂ in their bodies when they eat other animals. The total amount of the gas adds up to about 33 tons over a whale’s lifetime. When whales die, they take all that CO₂ with them down to the ocean floor.
At one time, millions of whales were in the world's oceans. Unluckily, whaling brought many whales to death. Though many whales have been saved nowadays, they still face serious dangers. They are influenced by pollution from chemicals (化学品), noise, and lots of plastics that end up in the oceans.
Whales are important to the future health of our planet. If whale populations increased to what they were before whaling, whales could take in about 1.7 billion tons of CO₂ each year. Compare this to the high costs needed to plant forests, and you will see why whales might be an amazing solution. It might be difficult to realize, but it’s worth fighting for.
1. Why have scientists suggested whales as a solution?A.Because whales are facing great dangers. |

8 . Do you know what birds use to build their nests (巢)? You may say that birds usually build their nests with sticks, leaves or grass. But do you know that birds are also building their nests with rubbish these years? The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
A group of European scientists looked into about 35, 000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth. Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have special smell, so they can keep insects away to protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a study. To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net (渔网) may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the baby birds eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our bird friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment.
