3 . Swifts (雨燕) live mostly in the air. These small birds are among the fastest animals on Earth. In fact, swifts can go two or three days without touching the ground! To get used to life in the sky, swifts use their speed and the saliva (唾液) in their mouths.
Swifts can fly faster than 100 miles per hour. That’s because their wings are like boomerangs (回力镖). This shape of the wings helps them to fly much faster. They can also move one wing faster than the other, which allows them to make sharp turns without slowing down. Making fast, sharp turns helps swifts catch flying bugs to eat.
The saliva helps swifts catch bugs to feed their young. It is sticky, like glue. Swifts often fly into clouds of bugs such as mosquitoes and open their wide mouths to catch as many insects as they can. The bird collects as many insects as they can. The bird collects insects in its mouth gradually (逐渐地) and holds the insects in a sticky ball of saliva. One food ball can contain nearly 1,000 bugs.
Swifts also use their saliva as glue to build their nests. The birds catch feathers in the air and stick the feathers together to build a strong nest. Swifts’ short feet are not good for walking or standing on land for long. But their sharp claws allow them to stick to rocks and walls so they can take a short rest before returning to their lives in the sky.

It saw a dying flower smile happily and asked, “You’re dying. Why are you still happy?” “I’ll have my dream come true,” said the flower. “What’s it?” the bird asked. “I want to make fruit,” answered the flower. Then the little bird saw it: happiness is hope in the heart.
The bird went on flying and saw a lame (瘸的) duck sing a song happily. “You’re unlucky. How could you be happy?” asked the bird. “I helped a little duck stand up”, said the lame duck. So the bird saw it: happiness is love in the heart.
The bird kept flying and saw a spider climb a wall excitedly. It fell off the wall a few times, but didn’t give up. The bird asked in surprise, “You failed many times. Don’t you feel sad?” The spider replied, “If I keep on trying, I’m sure to climb up the wall. Thinking of that, I’m happy.” The bird saw it: happiness is faith in the heart. In the end, the bird knew that happiness is not in far places but in our own hearts.

5 . Jacob lived at the foot of the mountains. There was a thick forest, and the boy loved it very much. He knew the birds and other animals there very well.
One day, while he was playing in the forest, Jacob found an eaglet (幼鹰) with a broken wing (翅膀). It fell off a tall tree. Jacob picked it up and then took it home. He cleaned its wing with warm water. Then he carefully put the medicine on the wing. And he made a bed for the little bird to lie on.
Jacob fed the eaglet with fresh milk every day. As the bird got stronger, it started to follow Jacob everywhere. Jacob knew he couldn’t keep it for long. It was time to set the eaglet free.
Early one morning, Jacob took the eaglet high up a hill. He then let it go. The bird flew into the sky happily. But soon, it seemed to remember something. It flew down again and followed Jacob all day. It was getting dark. Jacob had to do something. He ran to a nearby cave (洞穴) so that it couldn’t find him.

6 . Dolphins are not fish. They are mammals (哺乳动物). They live in groups and speak to each other in their own language. But they are quite different from almost all land animals. Their brain is as big as men’s and they live a long life—at least 20 or 30 years.
Like some animals, dolphins use sounds to help them find their way around. They also use these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. They do not use their ears to receive sounds, but use the jaw — the lower part of the mouth.
It is strange that dolphins are friendly to men, and for thousands of years, there are many stories about dolphins and men. In the 19th century, in a dangerous part of the sea near New Zealand, there was a dolphin. The seamen liked him very much and gave him a very good name, Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. In 1903 a passenger on a boat with the name of “The Penguin” shot and hurt Jack. Luckily the dolphin didn’t die, and after a long time he was well again. He guides the boats through the area for nine more years, but he refused to help the boat “The Penguin”.
Today, some people still kill dolphins, but many countries in the world now protect them. In these places, people are not allowed to kill them.

7 . Pandas are very popular in China. People around the world like this black and white animal very much, too. Ya Ya is among them. Now let’s know more about Ya Ya.
When Ya Ya was born in the Beijing Zoo, she weighed about 0.14 kilos. For a research and protection plan, she was taken to the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee in 2003. But there was something wrong with her fur in 2006. Her health condition became worse in 2014. Experts at the Memphis Zoo and in China tried many ways but couldn’t solve the problems. On April 27, Ya Ya returned to China after staying for 20 years in America. The panda was then quarantined (隔离) in Shanghai Zoo before moving to Beijing. On May 29, Ya Ya arrived at its home, the Beijing Zoo.
The Beijing Zoo has prepared a special feeding place for Ya Ya as well as feeding plans, care and medical support, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. As she is old, she needs to rest and adapt (适应) to the new environment. So she will not be visited for a short period of time. The zoo will tell the public about Ya Ya’s health condition through its official Weibo account, according to the administration (管理部门).
A lot of people pay much attention to Ya Ya. They hope she will get better soon.

8 . Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable (不可思议的) sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply (仅仅) turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

9 . Scientists in Europe have discovered (发现) that magpies (喜鹊) and crows (乌鸦) are using an unusual material (原料) to build their nests (巢)—spikes (尖刺) designed to keep birds away from buildings. The birds appear to be removing (移除) the spikes from buildings and adding them to their own nests.
Auke-Florian Hiemstra is a Dutch scientist who studies how wild animals use materials made by humans. He has seen nests that include some pretty unusual materials—things like plastic flowers, sunglasses. “Almost anything can become part of a bird nest,” he says.
But he was surprised when someone at a hospital in Antwerp, Belgium sent him a picture of a magpie nest. The top of the nest had thin metal spikes all over. The metal spikes were “anti-bird spikes”. They come in strips (条状) and are usually placed on buildings to stop birds from landing. But this time, the birds used the strips of spikes to make a nest.
The scientists learned about some other nests in Europe that also used anti-bird spikes. Some were magpie nests; others were made by crows. “These are the craziest bird nests I’ve ever seen,” says Mr Hiemstra.
