2 .

Though we often see some cat lovers online call themselves as “cat slaves (猫奴)” publicly to show their love, most people still hold the view that cats don’t seem very friendly. Unlike dogs, they don’t often play with people and they stay alone for hours. But a new study shows that cats like people just as much as dogs.

Researchers at Oregon State University, USA, studied cats’ relationships with their owners. They invited the owners of 117 cats to take a test. In this six-minute test, cat owners walked into a new room with their pets. After two minutes, the owners left the room, leaving the cats alone. This made the cats feel stressed. When the owners came back two minutes later, the researchers wanted to see what the cats would do. About two-thirds of the cats came to greet their owners right away when they returned. The cats then went back to look around in the room but still returned to their owners now and then.

These cats, the researchers said, saw their owners as a source (来源) of safety in a new place. The findings are similar to those found in a study on dogs. “The idea that cats like to stay alone or don’t really care about people isn’t holding up,” said Kristyn Vitale, a scientist who worked on the study. “The more we find out about cats, the more we are seeing that they are social animals.”

文章大意:本文主要讲了为什么斑马有黑白条纹。
6 . 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,完成下列各题。

Have you ever wanted to know why zebras are black and white? Surely, the zebra is not the animal that only has one color, but it is black and white striped (有条纹的). Why? It’s a question that scientists have been researching for a long time. And the following reasons may make sense.

Zebras use the stripes to protect themselves from lions. The horse-like animal has lots of enemies who feed on them, and the lion is one of them. Luckily, lions are color blind. So the black and white stripes help zebras hide in the grass so that the lions can hardly find them.

Stripes can keep both big animals and little insects away from zebras. Flies usually like to lay their eggs in water. It is said that they prefer to lay their eggs on black things too, as black reflects (反射) the light in the same direction as water. In a certain way, white stripes save the zebras.

According to scientists, stripes can also be a symbol of the zebra. Just like humans, we can find people of the same kind from their eyes, hair or language. Zebras can easily find their own kind from others by the stripes. No other animals have the same stripes like them.

1. Why do lions have difficulty in finding the zebras in the grass?
Because the lions are ________.
2. Where do flies probably lay their eggs?
Flies prefer to lay their eggs in water or ________.
3. Which color of stripes can keep flies from zebras?

文章大意:本文讲述了鲸鱼不适合在淡水中长期生活。
8 .

As we all know, whales are the biggest animal living in oceans. However, how long whales can live in fresh water has become a matter of some discussion because of several visits of whales to fresh water (淡水). The interest in this matter first became hottest in 1985 when Humphrey, the name of a humpback whale (座头鲸), succeeded living in the fresh water of the Sacramento River for several weeks before finally returning to the Pacific Ocean. The matter happened again in May of 2007, when a mother whale and her baby whale entered the Sacramento River.

Some experts say that it is uncommon to see whales in fresh water for more than a few weeks because most whales are built for saltwater environments. Scientists are not quite sure how long whales can live in fresh water because they can’t get the food they usually have in the sea. Besides, small cuts, for example, are easily cured (治愈) in salt water. Fresh water environments do not have the materials (材料) which are good for cuts.

Fresh water environments are also not natural for a whale’s swimming and other activities. Most whales swim in water that is at least 20 feet (6.1m) deep. Fresh water rivers may be only a few feet deeper than the girth (围度) of a whale’s body. This makes it more possible for them to be beached.

Many whales are migratory (迁徙的) animals by habit. Because they are not used to the route they take, whales can easily get lost. That’s probably why we have the chance to see whales in fresh water. Although it may be interesting to see whales in fresh water, whale lovers actually worry about the matter.

1. Why does the writer mention (提及) Humphrey in Paragraph 1?
A.To ask people to keep an eye on the protection of whales.
B.To tell when people became interested in the matter.
C.To give an example of the visits of whales to fresh water.
2. What does the underlined word “route” in the Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.路线B.方式C.饮食
3. Why can’t whales live in fresh water for a long time?
① Because whales can’t get the food they want in fresh water.
② Because fresh water can’t help whales cure their cuts.
③ Because fresh water environments are not big enough for whales.
④ Because whales are easy to get lost in fresh water.
A.①②③B.②③④C.①③④
4. What would the writer probably write about after the last paragraph?
A.The things people can do to see whales in fresh water.
B.The study on how long whales can live in fresh water.
C.The ways to help whales return to the oceans.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了世界上最长寿的狗Bobi,以及他长寿的秘诀。

9 . Bobi, the world’s oldest dog, just celebrated his 31st birthday on May 11th, 2023.

A party was held on Saturday at his home in a Portuguese (葡萄牙的) village. More than 100 people attended the party. Local meat and fish were served to the guests and Bobi, who only eats human food.

Mr. Costa owned several old-aged dogs in the past, but he never imagined any of his dogs would reach their 30s. What has helped Bobi’s long life? Mr. Costa believes the “quiet and peaceful environment” in which Bobi lives matters. Also Bobi has enjoyed a free and happy life in the nearby forest. But he thinks the most important reason is that the “very active” dog has never been lonely.

Now in Bobi’s older years, he finds it difficult to walk. Just like old-aged humans, Bobi sleeps a lot. He lies down in bed at once after eating, although on cold days he chooses to take a short sleep by the fire. He refuses to walk in the forest. Instead he prefers to hang out at home in the yard. Only little Costa, Mr. Costa’s son, can ask him for a walk outside.

Mr. Costa, now 38, was only 8 years old when Bobi was born. “Bobi is special because looking at him is like remembering the family members who have already left this world, like my grandparents,” Mr. Costa said.

文章大意:本文中Emily Levine博士阐述狗和人的关系,我们要注意她的肢体语言蓝知道它的需求。
10 .

Some things seem perfect together: Milk and bread. Summer and watermelon. And... dogs and petting (抚摸), right? Maybe it’s not all right. We learnt something new when we recently chatted with Dr. Emily Levine, a scientist who studies animals and the owner of Animal Behavior hospital of New Jersey.

“Many dogs really don’t find being petted, hugged or kissed very nice — they just don’t enjoy it very much,” she told us. “There are some dogs that love jumping and running when they haven’t seen you in a while, because they’re so excited to see you. Some dogs may hide how they really feel about it. But when you really watch a dog’s body language when they’re hanging out and doing their own thing, most of them are just standing being petted, some of them get so angry that they start to shout and say ‘Hey, please, back off! I’m really not enjoying this.’”

Of course lots of furry animals do seem to enjoy being hugged, but if we hug a dog who doesn’t seem very like it, what should we do? “That clearly makes them worried or they’re showing their angry,” Dr. Levine said. “We should pay attention to the early signs.”

Dr. Levine noted that hugging can make dogs feel difficult to breathe, so she suggested, “You can pet the cheek (脸颊) and the chin (下巴), try not to go along down the back, but you can keep it for a short while,” she said. “It’s a relationship we have with our dogs.” Dr. Levine advised that our best choice to find out its need is to look at their body language.

1. What do we learn from paragraph 2?
A.All the dogs like being hugged and kissed.
B.Few dogs can stand being petted if they don’t like.
C.The dogs will jump and run when they haven’t seen you in a while.
2. What is Dr. Levine’s opinion of finding out dog’s need?
A.Petting its cheek and chin.
B.Hugging it for a long time.
C.Watching its body language.
3. In which part of a magazine can we read the passage?
A.Sports.B.Science.C.Environment.
