1 . Bamboo is one of the nature’s most surprising plants. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass.
Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist recorded one bamboo plant that grew almost 1.5 meters in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe. There are more than 1,000 kinds of bamboo that grow around the world on both mountains and plains (平原).
Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters(厘米) wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimeters across. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to black to green.
Many Asian countries have been using bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for building new buildings. As a matter of fact, the cables (绳索) that hold up the hanging bridge across the Min River in Sichuan are made of bamboo. The bridge has been in use for more than 1,000 years, and is still holding strong.
In Africa, engineers are teaching poor farmers how to use bamboo to find water. These African countries need cheap ways to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. It seems that bamboo is one of the best things they can use. Bamboo pipes and drills (钻) can help to make the poor thirsty fields be watered.

2 . In order to get away from the busy life in the big city, two young men decided to spend a holiday in the countryside. They enjoyed the beautiful scenery and fresh air there. One day, while taking a walk together, they crossed a large field.
“Look out!” one of the young men shouted, because a bull(公牛) appeared and began to chase(追赶)them. The bull looked like a monster and made a terrible roar(咆哮), rolling its big eyes. They were very scared. They ran as fast as they could, but the bull kept running after them.
Finally, one of the men climbed up a tree. The other jumped into a hole, but soon he came out of it. And then the bull chased him back into the hole.
“Stay there!” his friend shouted, but soon the man came out again, and again the bull chased him right back.
The same thing went on another three times.
At last, the man in the tree got angry and shouted to his friend, “How foolish you are! I have told you to stay in the hole for a while! Why are you always coming out?”
“It's easy for you to say,” the other man said more angrily. “But there is a bear in the hole!”
So you see, sometimes things are not what they appear to be. We should always try to stand in others' shoes and look from there.

We need animals. Every animal has its place in the balance (平衡) of nature. We should try to help save the animals.
Some people think zoos are good places. The zoos give the animals the comfortable and safe living places. If the animals get hurt or ill, people will take care of them. The zoo is a good place to know the rules in the wild world. We can be much closer to nature. We can know more about the animals in the zoos by watching, listening even smelling instead of just looking at the pictures in books.
Some people don’t think animals feel happy in the zoos. Animals like pandas, wolves and bears usually live in the wild. They play and find food by themselves. They are free and happy in the wild. If they are in the zoos, food is enough and rooms are comfortable. They do not need to do their best to find food to eat or places to stay in. They just walk around, sleep day and night, but they are not free at all.
I think we should build national parks as wild life nature reserves to protect animals. If we do nothing, animals will get fewer and fewer.

6 . A video of a hungry and thin polar bear in Canada’s wilderness has gone popular on the Internet. The video shows the bear is in search of food, walking across land with no snow or ice. It is all skin and bones. The bear is looking for food in waste containers. It is at times too weak to support its own body weight and difficult to stand. Paul Nicklen, the photographer who took the video, said the polar bear’s trouble was a clear sign of the surprising effect of climate change. He said filming the animal made them sad. He explain his team members were “holding their tears and emotions(情感) while recording this dying polar bear”.
Mr. Nicklen is part of the environmental group Sea Legacy. His team was on Canada’s Baffin Island to get a documentary on conservation. He said the bear they filmed was not old and probably died within hours. He said, “This is what hunger looks like. The muscles weaken. No energy. It’s a slow, painful death.” he blamed the bear’s sad trouble on global warming. He said, “As temperatures rise and sea ice melts, polar bears lose the main food of their diets-seals.” Climate change is the biggest threat to the world’s 26,000 polar bears. The video explains that bears are “hungry, and running out of energy” and are “forced to walk into human living places for any food”.

8 . When we talk of plants, most of us will think of things that grow from the ground and have green leaves, but there are plants that do not look or act like other plants. Some of these belong to a special class of plants called fungi.
Fungi may appear almost everywhere. ①________________________Because fungi do not have green leaves to make their own food, fungi must take their food from animals, other plants or water. Some fungi live on dead or rotting wood, while others grow on living trees or in dirt or moss(苔藓). Mushrooms(蘑菇) are the best-known fungi.
②___________________For example, cauliflower mushrooms are found in forests from July to October. They can grow to be as heavy as fifty pounds! They grow at the foot of trees. Squirrels can easily eat them or carry them off to their hole to eat later.
