Little Jim lived in a poor village with his mother. One summer day, Jim’s mother ______ him to the field to find some dried wood for the fire.

Motuo lies in the south of the Himalayas in Tibet. It is known as the “Natural Museum of Tibet”. It is home to all kinds of mountains, rivers, waterfalls, plants and animals its special geographic location (地理位置) makes it a beautiful place. It was one of the hardest places to reach and was the last city in China without a highway.

The construction (施工) of the first highway to Motuo started in the 1960s. However, it was no completed until over 50 years later. In 2014, the construction of its second highway—the Paimo Highway started. In October 2022, the construction of the main body of the highway was completed.

They are great engineering projects. In this area, earthquakes and heavy rains happened very often. There could be falling rocks or even landslides (滑坡). People must build many walls and nets to protect the two highways. Another challenge was the snow. Plenty of snow sometimes destroyed rocks and roads. As a result, the construction of the highways to Motuo was stopped several times. To solve this problem, people built a tunnel (隧道) that goes through the mountain area.

The two highways stand for the Chinese spirit of “never giving up”. They are ways to connect Motuo to the outside world and show how China cares about people in the far areas.

Since the age of 5, Laura Lee has had a strange habit—she collects cardboard toilet-paper rolls (厕所卷纸筒). She didn’t know this habit would one day become a recycling movement.

In 2018, Lee set up a goal to collect 1,000 kilograms of these rolls. She was then a 16-year-old student at Nanyang Girls High School in Singapore. By February 2021, she had collected 860kg. She received an Ecofriend Award for protecting the environment from the Singapore government.

Why did she choose toilet rolls? “They are convenient to collect and also one of the purest forms of waste to recycle because they are made of only one material,” Lee told Singapore Today.

She organized “toilet roll challenge” within her school and worked with cleaners to collect used toilet rolls. She gave speeches about what she was doing at local schools. She also raises awareness (意识) about different social causes (公益) through her Live (直播), “On A Roll”.

The waste management firm (废物管理公司) Veolia gave her money for every kilogram of toilet rolls. Then Lee will give away the money collected to a social cause focused on community health.

In order to get away from the busy life in the big city, two young men decided to spend a holiday in the countryside. They enjoyed the beautiful scenery and fresh air there. One day, while taking a walk together, they crossed a large field.

“Look out!” one of the young men shouted, because a bull（公牛） appeared and began to chase（追赶）them. The bull looked like a monster and made a terrible roar（咆哮）, rolling its big eyes. They were very scared. They ran as fast as they could, but the bull kept running after them.

Finally, one of the men climbed up a tree. The other jumped into a hole, but soon he came out of it. And then the bull chased him back into the hole.

“Stay there!” his friend shouted, but soon the man came out again, and again the bull chased him right back.

The same thing went on another three times.

At last, the man in the tree got angry and shouted to his friend, “How foolish you are! I have told you to stay in the hole for a while! Why are you always coming out?”

“It's easy for you to say,” the other man said more angrily. “But there is a bear in the hole!”

So you see, sometimes things are not what they appear to be. We should always try to stand in others' shoes and look from there.
