文章大意:本文主要介绍了在西澳大利亚州鲨鱼湾的巨大海草草甸。

2 . A huge seagrass meadow (草甸) has just been thought as the “world’s largest single living organism (生物)”.

The seagrass meadow lies in Shark Bay, in Western Australia. It covers 77 square miles—an area of about 28,000 soccer fields! Before this discovery, the record was held by a 3.7-square-mile mushroom (蘑菇) in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon, USA.

Based on its size and growth speed, the meadow is about 4,500 years old. Old as it is, it is not record-breaking. The record holder is a seagrass plant in the western Mediterranean, which covers about 9.3 square miles. It’s believed to be over 100,000 years old!

Researchers from the University of Western Australia and Flinders University discovered the huge plant unexpectedly while they were studying the genes of Shark Bay’s seagrass. The team studied seagrass samples (样本) from ten meadows across Shark Bay. To their surprise, they found the samples were all the same in gene, meaning they all belonged to one plant. Later studies showed that the seagrass does come from a single plant.

The huge plant also has another quality. Most seagrasses receive half of each parent’s DNA. However, the Shark Bay seagrass carries all the genes of each parent.

The scientists reported their findings in the magazine Proceedings of the Royal Society on May 31, 2022. Now they plan to do experiments to see how the seagrass continue s to grow in Shark Bay’s terrible conditions.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了作物的种子是如何进入“种子银行”的以及“种子银行”对国家粮食安全的重要性。

3 . Did you know that a seed (种子) can have its own “ID card”? The “card” shows that the seed is at the national crop germplasm bank (国家作物种质库) in Beijing, known as China’s seed bank.

A seed’s journey to the seed bank starts with a census (普查). China’s latest census of seeds started in 2021 and ended in 2023, reported CCTV News. Workers collected more than 139,000 new seeds from all over the country. They then arrived at the seed bank.

When seeds first come in, they each get a number for their “physical examination”. For example, workers put all kinds of corns from different farms together. Then they put them into groups according to the seeds’ look or taste.

Next, workers check the seeds to make sure they’re healthy and all the unhealthy ones are given up. A worker at the seed bank showed CCTV News a seed that had a large insect (虫子) inside it, “A seed like this should not be saved,” he said.

With the bad seeds gone, workers then test the good ones to see how likely they are to grow. The seed bank has a quick, smart way of doing this: Workers test the seeds and use the information they get to predict (预测) their growth. Workers dry and weigh the best seeds after several tests. Then, they’re stored in fridge at -18℃.

China’s seed bank keeps all the seed information safe and helps people learn about them. This can help develop new plants that can grow better and deal well with hard environments, ensuring (确保) the food safety of the country.

文章大意:本文介绍了植物在室内环境中发挥的重要作用。

5 . ①Plants are more than just pretty to look at. They give us fruits, vegetables and food we eat. Some plants even provide materials for medicine or building things. But do you know that plants can do something even more amazing? They can make our homes, schools and workplaces much healthier. We spend a large part of our day indoors. Unluckily, the air inside buildings can often be full of a chemicals (化学物质) from many things around us. This poor air quality (质量) can make us feel sick, cause eye problems, and even make it hard for us to breathe (呼吸). When the air inside buildings gets really bad, people even call them “sick buildings”.

②The good news is that plants are like nature’s super heroes. They have a magic power fighting against bad air. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide (CO₂) and breathe out oxygen (O₂) which we humans need to live. They can also add moisture (水分) to the air if it’s too dry, making it more comfortable for us to breathe.

Scientists have discovered that plants have the ability to take in harmful chemicals, making the air around us safer to breathe. They set up a completely closed building called “bio-home” for experiments. Before they added plants, the air inside was full of chemicals and people found it hard to breathe. Then scientists added different kinds of plants in it. After a while, they used a special machine to test the air quality. The air got much cleaner and it became easier to breathe. People could go inside   without feeling unwell. Scientists found out the building wasn’t a “sick building” any more.

④So you see, plants are incredible! They are not only beautiful to look at, but they also provide us with food, help create materials and play an important role in our health. I am sure you all know how important recycling is. Recycling is to collect the litter to produce useful things which can be     1     again. Even though it takes energy to recycle, it is actually worth doing it. Do you know     2     it works? Collecting things that can be recycled is the first step you have to do. Only some materials can be recycled. They are made of paper, metal (金属), glass and plastic. Can you think of everyday things made of these materials? Some bottles are a good     3    . They are made of glass. Magazines and newspapers are made of     4    . Let’s get back to the steps of recycling. Once you put all your things in a recycling bin, a truck comes to pick     5     up. Everything goes to a recycling company. There, these things are reused to make     6     products.

Now let’s take a closer look at how old paper is changed. First, the old paper is made into     7     pieces. Then a special kind of water with chemicals (化学制品) is put into them. And     8    , new paper is created! There are things written on the old paper,     9     they can’t be seen through this way.

7 . ① Some people are very careful about everything they do. However, some people are risk-takers — they usually do things without thinking too much about the results. For example, teenagers are especially likely to take more risks than others. Why is this?

② Van, a professor at Leiden University in the Netherlands, uses computer games to find out why some people are more impulsive (容易冲动的) than others. In one test, players are asked to click on a balloon on a computer screen. Every time they click, the balloon gets bigger. The bigger the balloon is at the end of the test, the higher their prize will be. But if the balloon gets too big, it’ll blow off and the player will get nothing.

③ Van found that when teenagers plays game, a part of their brain which is called the striatum (纹状体) would become much more active. It makes teenagers want to win. On the other hand, another part of the brain, the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质), helps them control their decision-making process (步骤).

④ It shows that young people have more active striatums and less active prefrontal cortexes which influence their ability to make careful decisions. You might have already guessed that teenagers would blow off more balloons during the test than adults—mainly because they are more likely to take risks and don’t take the time to think carefully.

⑤ “The brain of teenagers is like a car with a very strong engine,” Van said. “Its brakes just don’t work well enough to stop them quickly.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了剑桥大学的科学家使用两种不同的机器人健康教练进行的一项研究。

8 . Recently, University of Cambridge scientists carried out a study using two different robot health coaches. In four weeks, 26 participants (参与者) were guided through health exercises by one of two robots: either the QT or the Misty. QT is about 90 cm tall and looks like a child while Misty is a 36 cm tall toy-like robot. Both robots have the same voices, expressions, and way of talking.

The scientists found that how the robots looked like had a great influence on how people communicated with them. Those who did their health exercises with Misty said they felt more of a connection with their “coach” than people who worked with QT.

The researchers said that people’s expectations of robots are influenced by popular culture. For example, in films robots are so smart that they are able to do anything you can imagine. But when you face a robot in the real world, it often fails to match your expectations.

According to the researchers, since the toy-like robot looks simpler, people may have had lower expectations. So they find the robot easier to talk to and connect with. However, when people work with the human-like robot, they find it doesn’t match their expectations. “The robot was not able to have interactive (互动的) communication,” they said.

“It could be that since the Misty robot is more toy-like, it matched their expectations,” said Dr. Micol Spitale, a scientist of the study. “But since QT looks more like humans, they expected it to behave like a human. This may be why participants who worked with QT were not very interested. It’s a challenge to create a robot that can have natural conversations with people.”

1. What can we know about the two robots?
A.They look the same.B.They have different voices.C.They talk in the same way.
2. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

4. Why didn’t participants show much interest in QT?
A.They didn’t like what QT taught.
B.Their expectations of QT were too high.
C.QT was not good at doing health exercises.
5. Where does the passage probably come from?
A.A storybook.B.A travel guide.C.A science magazine.
