Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and     1     these cars, and the technology is there.

So how do they work? The cars have sensors (传感器) all around which can find other cars and     2     on the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when     3    , so the car knows how far it is from the stone or other parked cars. Road signs are read by cameras, and GPS is used so the car knows where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address!     4    , a central computer system takes in all the information it receives from the sensors and cameras and work out when to speed up, turn and stop.

Sound     5     your idea of heaven? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while “driving” would be     6     with this new technology. You wouldn’t have to worry about remembering directions where you’re going. In addition, computers are generally better     7     than humans. They would also drive     8     than people — they don’t listen to music or talk with friends, they would follow the speed limit and they have quicker reaction times if something bad happens.

However, there are many downsides of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulty     9     ethical(道德的) decisions; if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and kill the car’s passengers? There would also be many legal decisions to be made — should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by     10    ? Or would there need to be a responsible(有责任的) adult with a driver’s licence in the car at all times?

3 . Artificial intelligence(人工智能), or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.

AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition(识别) is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals(罪犯). Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. It also checks the ID of ride-hailing(网约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.

AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don't have this ability. Carmakers are testing a light signal system to help them "speak" to humans. The system can show what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driverless car is yielding(让路), it will flash two white lights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up.

Service Robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this—you come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers.

AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even replace us in many jobs.

5 . A British supermarket became the first in the world to let customers pay by using just the veins(静脉) in their fingers in September, 2017.

Customers at the Costcutter store, at Brunel University in London, can now pay by using their vein map.

The company behind the technology, Sthaler, said it was in “serious talks” with other big British supermarkets to use high-technology finger vein scanners(扫描器).

It works by using infrared(红外线) to scan people's finger veins and then connects this map with their bank cards.Customers' bank details are then stored with payment provider Worldpay, in the same way you can store your card details when shopping online.Shoppers can then go to the supermarket with nothing on them but their own hands and use it to make payments in just three seconds. It requires the person to be alive. It means that if a criminal cuts off someone's finger, it would not work.

It's reported that fingerprint recognition(指纹识别),used widely on mobile phones now,is unsafe and can be copied even from finger smears(指纹残留) left on phone screens. But vein technology is safer as it cannot be copied or stolen.

Sthaler said nearly fifty students were already using the system and it expected 3,000 students out of 13, 000 to have signed up by November.

Simon Binns, commercial director of Sthaler, told The Daily Telegraph, “This makes payments so much easier for customers. This is the safest form.”

There are a lot of things in our schoolbags, i    3     pencils, rulers, books and so on. None of them grow in the field. People make them in factories. They look common today, but hundreds of years ago no one knew about them. Who invented them? Where were they invented? We aren't sure. However, we should thank the inventors. Their inventions are so important to us. We couldn't e    4    such a wonderful life without their inventions.

Some of the inventions have changed not only our life but also the w    5    world, such as the telephone, the TV and the computer. We use them every day, but most of us don't know the names of the inventors. Should we remember the inventors? We can remember so many movie stars and pop stars. Why don't we pay more attention to the scientists and inventors? We should look on them as stars in our eyes!
