1 . Do you know Lao She? He is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the t    1     century. He wrote many plays, novels and short stories about the lives of c    2     people.

2 . Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is a city full of special sights. The tall glass shopping centres in the city look very modern. 3 . Last winter holiday, I visited a village with only 11 houses. T    1     the village was very small, I s    2    a whole day in it.

The village became well-known because of Grandpa Huang's hard work. He bought a house there over 30 years ago, but in 2010 the village was to be pulled down. In o     3    to save the old village, Grandpa Huang painted on the walls of his own house and other houses. He painted things that he liked. In the village, there were many paintings of animals, such as cats and birds. The most p    4    paintings for visitors were famous people. One of them was a picture of Andy Lau, my favourite singer. I liked him very much. It is said that Grandpa Huang painted the super singers because he is also a great fan of them.

4 . The Great Wall in China is k    1     to people all over the world. It is called the Ten-Thousand-Li Great Wall in Chinese. Do you know the famous Chinese saying "He who does not reach the Great Wall is n    2     a true man."?

The Great Wall is the l    3     wall in the world. It is m    4     than 6,000 kilometres long, and b    5     four and five metres wide. In most places it is wide enough for five horses or ten m    6     to walk side by side along the top. It was very difficult to build such a great wall w    7     our modern machines. All the work had to be done by hand. Many people were made to work on the wall away from t    8     homes. Thousands of them d    9     and were buried（埋葬） under the wall. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but also of the flesh and blood（血肉）of m    10     of men.

5 . Huge squares, great buildings and countless treasure — this year, the world’s largest   wooden palace, the Forbidden City, is 600 years old! It lived t    1     fires and wars. But it still stands at the heart of Beijing today. And it never f    2     to catch its visitors’ eyes.

Have you ever wondered who made this marvel(奇迹)?

In 1406, when the third Ming Emperor Yongle d    3     to move the country’s capital from Nanjing to Beijing, he started to build a palace at the heart of Beijing. His vision(愿景) was big. It took a million workers 14 years to finish it.

People sent materials from all over China to Beijing. Nanmu, the rarest of all Chinese woods, was used to make huge wooden pillars(柱子). People can only find it deep in those warm forests over 1,800 km away from Beijing. Workers had to float(漂浮) the wood on rivers all the way n    4     to Beijing.

Stones were also transported to the palace. The h    5     stone in the Forbidden City is 250 tons. It was found 80 km west of Beijing. Because of its w    6    , people could only move it during winter. They poured water onto the road to create ice. Then t    7    of workers in front kept pulling the stone on the ice to the palace.

The project even changed the local landscape(地貌). While building a river around the palace, workers dug up soil and piled it on a hill behind the Forbidden City. That’s e    8     where Jingshan came from.

The palace also holds many stories about ancient Chinese c    9     that still stays with us today. For example, there are mythical(神话的) animals s    10     on the palace’s roofs. The number of animals shows the status of a building — the more animals there are, the greater the building is.

6 . More people like living in a city now, especially young people who like new and modern things. Most people think it is much     1     （更容易的）to find a job in a city. They think there are a lot of     2     （有乐趣的）things to do and places to see in the city. There are also many     3     （选择）of public transport.     4     （当……时候）they are in the city, they can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, go to cinemas or go to parks.

When they feel tired, they can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, go to cinemas and go to parks.
