2 . What do black holes look like? Human beings have wanted to know about it for a long time. In 2019, we finally got the answer: They look like dark circles with a bright ring around the outside.
Scientists took the world’s first photo of a black hole. Scientists didn’t use a camera to take the picture. They used eight radio telescopes (射电望远镜) in different places around the world. The telescopes got signals (信号) from the black hole. Scientists used computers to process the signals. It took them two years to get the final picture.
The black hole is very far from Earth—about 55 million light-years away. One light-year is the distance that light travels in one year. One light-year is about 9 trillion (万亿) kilometers.
This is not the only black hole in the universe (字宙). Actually, scientists believe every large galaxy (星系) has a big black hole at its center. The one in our galaxy is called Sagittarius A.
Black holes are some of the most mysterious things in the universe. This photo can help us learn more about them.

4 . Harry and Annie lived a mile from town, but they walked there to school every day. It was a pleasant walk around the pond on their way to school. In winter, when the ice was thick and firm (坚固的), they went across the pond. But their mother did not like them to do this unless someone was with them.
“Don’t go across the pond today, children,” she said, as she kissed them goodbye one morning. “It is beginning to thaw.”
“All right, mother,” said Harry, not very happy, for he was very fond of running and sliding on the ice.
When they came to the pond, the ice looked hard and safe.
“There,” Harry said to his sister, “let’s slide over it.”
“But you promised mother,” said Annie. “No, I didn’t, I only said ‘All right’, and it is all right.”
“I didn’t say anything, so I can do as I like.” said Annie.
So they stepped on the ice and started to go across the pond.
They had not gone far before the ice gave way, and suddenly they fell into the water.
A man who was at work near the pond heard the crying of the children and rushed into the water to save them.
Harry managed to get out without any help, but poor Annie was nearly drowned (溺死) before the man could reach her.
They went home almost frozen (冻僵的) and learned a lesson they would remember for a lifetime.

5 . The FIFA World Cup is upon us in Qatar and excitement is truly kicking in.
World Cup is the biggest international soccer game and also the most-watched sporting event in the world. There are 32 teams competing to win. This year’s game looks to be particularly unique (独特的).
It’s the first time the game has been held in the Middle East. It’s also the first time in history the game is happening in winter, from Nov. 20 to Dec.18, 2022. That’s because Qatar is a desert country and in summer the temperature can be as high as 42℃. That’s way too hot to play outdoor sports. But it will still be pretty warm in winter. The temperature in the stadium is expected to be around 20℃ to 30℃.
Qatar is also the smallest nation by area to host the cup. They’ll be playing the first match of the game, facing Ecuador (厄瓜多尔). It’s Qatar’s first ever FIFA World Cup game. This makes them the first county to host their debut (首次露面) game since Italy in 1934!
There may be new challenges for many players too. Aside from the climate (天气), for European teams like England, France, Germany and Spain, it’s only just over a year since their last big international game, the UEFA Champions League (欧联杯).
According to FIFA’s rankings, the favorites to win the game this year are Brazil, followed by Argentina and France.
