4 . What’s the difference between a fear (恐惧) and a phobia (恐惧症)? You might have a fear of dogs if you were hurt by one. However, if you try not to walk down streets where you think there might be a dog, you may have a phobia. Phobia is a strong unnatural fear. If the fear starts to change a person’s life, he or she probably has a phobia. It’s reported that about 80 percent of us have at least one phobia.
Let’s talk about what the most “popular” phobias are. Flying may be the safest way to travel, but many people are afraid of doing it. Fear of heights is also very common. For example, the Spiderman actor Tobey Maquire can’t stand high places. However, he is not afraid of spiders. Rupert Grint, who acts in the Harry Potters movies, is afraid of spiders. “In one scene of the movie, we come into the large spider’s home, and there we meet a spider as big as an elephant. It’s really scary because it has hairs!” he said.

5 . In a few hours Sam would fly to Germany. We looked at each other but no sound broke the silence (寂静) of our beach-side house.
Such a moment (时刻) was not the first time for us. I hardly found a quiet moment to tell him what he meant to me, or what he might face in the future.
Sam was weak when he was born (出生) but grew into a strong boy. Then he became the best baseball player in high school. I was sorry he gave up his sports talent, but proud that later he chose English literature (文学). One day, I told Sam I regretted (后悔) never traveling to other countries to know better about the world before working. Sam decided to learn German in Berlin, even though his friends thought it meaningless.
What does it matter if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him? But when I stood before Sam, I knew it did matter. My father and I loved each other. However, I always regretted never hearing him put his feelings into words.
“Sam, if I could pick, I would pick you.” I said, and that was all I could say. I wasn’t sure if he understood what I meant. Sam came over to me and threw his arms around me, saying “Thank you.” My eyes misted over (模糊). Then, the moment ended, and Sam left home.
Thousands of miles away Sam might be busy walking in the street of Berlin.

6 . Rick was one of my third-grade students. 35 students were well behaved (表现好), but he was one in one million. Rick liked talking in class, so he was a real chatterbox. Many years later, I got a call from Rick’s parents and learned of his death. And then I received a wallet with two pieces of notebook paper. I realized that the pieces of paper were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Rick’s classmates had said about him. My eyes were full of tears.
