2 . 15 year-old Maddi went to an evening party with some boys without parental permission, playing late into the night. So her dad gave her a choice---either handing over her phone for a month, or giving him right to use her social media for two weeks. She chose the latter, giving Dad the keyword to her TikTok, and the Internet is so appreciative.

Maddi’s dad began to take over her social media early in November, so her followers could expect “some amazing posts, photos and short videos from her dad”. On November 11, Larry, Maddi’s dad, had already begun his funny performance to embarrass his teen daughter, by posting a selfie(自拍), titled “Felt cute. Might delete later”. But that was only the beginning, and by her dad's third post, the teen was already begging him to take away her phone for a month.

“After the first day, Maddi changed her mind and wanted to choose the one month,” the girl’s mother Tawnya couldn’t help laughing when interviewed by TODAY.com. “Larry told her, ‘No. I’m too fascinated. I have too many ideas. We’re sticking with the two weeks.’ He’s loving it. I think he’s gonna make his own TikTok account(账号) when this is over.”

From posing in a tight top and wearing a blonde wig(假发), to ballet dance, it seemed like there was nothing the 43-year-old daddy wouldn’t do to entertain, and Maddi’s friends and social media followers were attracted.

Over the two weeks, Madddi’s Instagram fans jumped from around 2,700 to 12,700, at the time of this writing, so she should probably thank her dad for the punishment. The only question is, can she continue Dad’s style? She’ll have to try, as many of her social media followers are already asking her to “bring Dad back”.

“We’re always down to embarrass our kids!” Tawnya Ford said; adding that her husband often picks up their kids from school dressed as Donald Duck.

1. Why did Maddi let her dad use her TikTok?
A.She wanted to share with him.
B.She wanted to amaze her fans.
C.She had wasted too much time.
D.She had broken the family rule.
2. What made Maddi change her mind after the first day?
A.Her fans, expectation.
B.Her mother’s words.
C.Her dad’s funny posts.
D.Her addiction to the Internet.
3. How did Maddi’s mother sound when speaking to the interviewer?
A.Stressed and serious.B.Excited and Proud.
C.Nervous and anxious.D.Relaxed and amused.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Result of Dad’s Punishment
B.Maddi’s Two -Week Offline Life
C.Dad Helps Daughter Gain Fans

3 . Dougan’s mum, Patricia, has lived at Dundonald House for two years and has had dementia(痴呆)for nine years. She has lost most of her speech. But the French course was something she and her husband could do together and the whole family has noticed a change in her.

“I think Dad decided he’d take Mum just for her benefit (好处),” says Mari Dougan. “But he loved it just as much as she did. After they did the French course, they did Italian. Mum knows she’s there and she sometimes answers with a word or two — that’s amazing. She has been much more active since she started the classes.”

Courses in French, Italian, German and Spanish last for ten weeks for an hour a week. The classes are the idea of Robbie Norval, who started Lingo Flamingo in 2015 to give lessons to older adults. Lingo Flamingo has 35 teachers who work in care homes and community centres in Scotland. So far, it has worked with more than 800 people.

Thomas Bak is a psychologist from the University of Edinburgh. His research into dementia over 20 years has found that people who are bilingual (双语的) get dementia up to four years later than those who are monolingual (只说一种语言的).

Even for people who aren’t bilingual, learning a language in later life has benefits, Bak says. He has found improvements (改善) in attention and memory among older adults. He believes it is never too late to learn a language. “In fact, it becomes more important with age,” he says. He adds that what is really good about language learning is the variety of tasks you have to do. “You have to learn to tell the difference between different sounds. You have to learn new ideas that might be very different from your mother tongue. You have to learn grammar and how to use words in a conversation,” he says. Bak says doing a sudoku puzzle is not as useful — it is like going to the gym and spending all your time on a single machine.

“We’ve also found learning a language really increases well-being and self-confidence,” Norval says. “If an adult with dementia can learn a couple of words, they think to themselves, ‘I can learn new things.’ They don’t fear dementia as much. They realise they’re not forgetting everything, which is a really important message.”

1. What has changed about Dougan’s mum after she started learning new languages?
A.She always talks to herself.
B.She is willing to go outside.
C.She can remember everything.
D.She can communicate with others.
2. What’s the attitude of Dougan’s dad to her mum learning a new language?
A.Amazed.B.Worried.C.Uncaring.D.Supportive.
3. What can we learn about Lingo Flamingo’s lessons?
A.They are only held in care homes.
B.They are mainly open to the elderly.
C.They include five different languages.
D.They are designed by the University of Edinburgh.
4. What does Thomas Bak think of language learning?
A.It is good for the brain.
B.It is not easy for older adults.
C.It is like doing work with a machine.
D.It is as hard as doing a sudoku puzzle.

5 . As a middle schooler, one of my life goals was the Presidential Fitness Award-an honor given to those who passed a series of gin-class tests that included doing a number of pull ups, running a mile, and, among other things, the sit and reach(another version of toe touching). That's where things went wrong for me. I could never reach quite far enough.

Toe touching is an easy way to begin or end any sort of workout, For most people, it is among the easiest stretching exercises to do. But for me(and any of my classmate)it's complete suffering. Why? “The two biggest factors are the flexibility of your hamstrings(腿筋) and the range of motion of your hip(髋) joints,” says Jeffrey Jenkins, a physiologist at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. “But another big factor is the relative length of your arms and your torso(躯干) to your legs, which unfortunately can't be changed.”

Ienkins says that although there are sore unjust aspects, overall the toe touch is not the worst measure of flexibility. But if you are flexibility clumsy like me, there are some things you can do to improve the flexibility of the body you have. Whenever you stretch then, your muscles contract, tighten, and resist the force to be stretched, resulting in that annoyingly painful feeling that most of us get when we first reach down to touch our toes or attempt to stretch other muscles. However, Jenkins says, if you are patient, this too shall pass.

If you hold the stretch for a minimum of six seconds, you can actually overcome the re flex (反射). In fact, Jenkins says, there's some evidence that holding still stretches for 30 seconds results in greater improvement in flexibility than holding it for 15 seconds, and just as much improvement as 60 seconds. But for some people, the pain that accompanies those sixty seconds is just too severe. If you can get past that pain, then you can probably improve your flexibility However, Jenkins cautions against tolerating too much pain; you could be tearing a muscle.

6 . New England holds some special museums. They are devoted largely or entirely to the work of just one person. And they are the artists’ birthplaces or onetime homes. Here are four examples of such museums.

Cyrus E. Dallin Art Museum

The name Cyrus E. Dallin (1861-1944) might not be familiar, but several of the artist’s sculptures (雕塑) are, especially those related to Native Americans. The museum is in the Jefferson Cutter House, an 1830 Greek styled building.

Norman Rockwell Museum

Rockwell (1894-1978) was America’s well-known artist. The museum, founded in 1969, moved into its present location, Robert A.M. Stern-designed building in 1993. Its 998 paintings and drawings are the largest single collection of Rockwell's artworks.

7 . After his father was rushed to the hospital, Yanatha Desouvre began to panic. So he did the one thing he knew would calm himself: He wrote. Over the next few weeks, Desouvre filled several notebooks, writing about his worry as well as his happy memories with his dad. “Writing allowed me to face my fear,” says Desouvre, “My pen was a tool to process the pain.”

He is in good company. An extensive body of research shows benefits to writing about a traumatic (创伤) experience in a manner that psychologists refer to as “expressive writing.”James Pennebaker, a psychology professor, says that studies have looked at the potential benefits of expressive writing and found that it can strengthen the immune system, including for people with illnesses such as cancer, depression, and PTSD(创伤后应激障碍). It can also help reduce chronic pain(慢性痛), and improve mood, sleep, and memory. And it may even help reduce symptoms of depression and PTSD.

Expressive writing works because it allows you to make meaning out of a painful experience, experts say. It can be a powerful coping tool for many, in large part because it helps reduce the secrecy people often feel about a trauma, as well as their reluctance to face emotions. The mere act of labeling a feeling—of putting words to an emotion—can hold back the neural activity in the threat area of the brain. Writing can increase someone’s acceptance of their experience, and acceptance is calming.

Recognizing that something is bothering you is an important first step. Translating that experience into language forces you to organize your thoughts. And creating a narrative gives you a sense of control.

1. Why is Desouvre’s story mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To bring up the topic.
B.To make a comparison.
C.To tell readers a real story.
D.To explore the key to writing.
2. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The results traumatic experience causes.
B.The benefits that expressive writing brings.
C.The symptoms traumatic experience shows.
D.The ways expressive writing strengthens immunity.
3. What can we conclude about expressive writing?
A.It contributes to better writing.
B.It lets us know how people obtain pain.
C.It can help face miserable experience.
D.It has been used widely in the daily life.
4. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A.A text book.
B.A news report.
C.A writing guide.
D.A medical magazine.

8 . Matt Haig, the best-selling author of the novel “The Midnight”, recommends some books that offer wisdom or comfort in difficult times.

Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Rilke (1929). This is the ultimate comfort read. The book is what the title suggests: letters from an older poet to a younger one. The great thing about Rilke’s advice is that it acknowledges the darkness and suffering of existence, yet manages despite that—or maybe even because of that—to inspire.

When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön(1996). I read this book during the first lockdown, and it was the perfect read for uncertain times. Chödrön is a Buddhist, but the advice and philosophy in these relatively few pages speaks universally. It’s a great book about embracing life in its totality, about seeing hope and suffering as part of a whole.

The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne(1928). The Winnie-the-Pooh stories really speak to people going through tough times. In many ways, each of the characters reflects a different mental state: Eeyore is depressed, Tigger is hyper-active, Piglet is anxious, and Pooh reflects a hope and optimism much needed in recovery. I reread this book when I was ill with a panic disorder, and it soothed me.

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (1994). In my opinion, this is the greatest book about writing ever written. But like Rilke, Lamott is offering far more than writing advice. She is offering wisdom on life and how to embrace its imperfect nature.

1. Which book came out first?
A.Bird by Bird.
B.The Midnight.
C.Letters to a Young Poet.
D.The House at Pooh Corner.
2. What can readers learn from When Things Fall Apart?
A.The tough times are everywhere.
B.Life consists of hope and suffering.
C.People have a variety of mental states.
D.The undesirable things of life can be ignored.
3. What do the four books have in common?
A.All contain inspiring advice.
B.They are based on true facts.
C.Matt Haig instructed their novelists.
D.Writing will be improved by reading them.
