1 . I waved goodbye to my senior high school life just six months ago and now I am a college freshman. However, my memory of high school life is so fresh that I feel as if it were only yesterday.
My senior high school is called Yantai No. 1 Middle School with a long history, which can date back to 1931. When I recall my memorable high school life, I feel blissful and impressed.
To be honest, my senior high school life was very tiring but I really enjoyed it. I was asked to put study in the first place all the time by both my parents and my teachers. At that time, I got up at 5:30 a.m. and went to bed late in order to have more study time to review what I had learned in the day. In addition to study, I also took part in some activities like English speech contests, calligraphy competitions and so on.
Our class was like a big family. I got along well with my classmates. We always discussed issues of all kinds after class. I made many friends in the family and we still keep in touch with each other after we graduated. Luckily, my teachers were also very enthusiastic and friendly. We were seen as their children. They not only taught us knowledge but told us how to do better.
What’s more, dormitory life is also worth mentioning. Living far away from my home, I became quite independent by the end of the first semester at senior high. My roommates and I worked as a team to do some cleaning every day. We had a good time living as a family together, and my social skills were gradually improved.
This is my high school life, busy but fulfilling. I will never forget it.

4 . A great earthquake happened in southwestern China on May 12,2008, killing thousands of people. The quake struck Wenchuan and other parts of Sichuan Province in the middle of the afternoon and a number of school buildings, shops and homes were destroyed. The number of the dead and missing rose as rescue workers dug through flattened (夷为平地的) schools and homes to find survivors. It was reported that many people were still buried under the ruins in and around Mianyang, a city about 60 miles east of the epicenter (震中). People there spent a second night sleeping outside in the rain. The government ordered people not to return to their homes for safety concerns. Few lights were on in the city, and people ate and chatted by candlelight.
Rescue teams brought people to Mianyang's stadium for food and shelter. Outside the railway station, the police shouted in megaphones (扩音器) telling people where they could get free food. Buses carrying survivors left Beichuan, which is in the northeast of the epicenter and was also flattened by the quake. 1,000 students and teachers were killed or missing at a fallen high school in Beichuan County. At another school in the town of Juyuan, 900 students were buried under the ruins. There was little hope that many survivors would be found under the rubble. But officials asked the people not to give up hope. 20,000 soldiers arrived in the disaster area on the way by plane, train and truck and even on foot.
Thirty-one British tourists who were panda-watching in Wolong National Nature Reserve were safe. And the pandas were reported safe, too.

5 . There are so many expressions in American English that sound good but actually are not.
“Face the music” is a good example. When someone says they have to face the music, it does not mean they are going to a musical show or a concert. To “face the music” means accepting the bad results of behavior.
Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I’m away. But please do not drive it. It is a very fast car and you are not on the insurance (保险).” But you do not listen. You want to show it to some friends and pretend (假装) the car is yours. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. The damage is serious. When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and “face the music”. The “music” here is the result of your behavior. It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the “music” is, you must face it.
There are other American expressions that mean the same as “face the music”.
“Take your medicine” means accepting the results of something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it.” He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results, or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!
“Pay the piper” also means the same as “face the music”. But that expression has its own very interesting beginning. We will talk about that in the next Words and Their Stories.
1. What’s the main idea of this passage?A.To invite a friend to go to a musical performance. |
B.To tell people how to deal with a bad situation. |

7 . The invention of the 1D barcodes revolutionized supermarkets and general market management. But shortly after their introduction, their disadvantages were clear. There was an instant demand to be able to encode (编码) more than 20 alphanumeric characters (字符) that the traditional barcodes could hold.
Denso Wave, a Japanese company, at the time, was in the business of manufacturing 1D barcode scanners. Listening to feedback from users of the 1D barcode scanners they were selling, they put together a development team to come up with a solution.
One of the key targets was to ensure that no matter what barcode they designed, it can be scanned very fast. It took the team nearly 18 months, and eventually they came up with a barcode that could hold up to 7,000 alphanumerical characters and could be scanned up to 10 times faster than any other code at the time. In 1994, the QR Code was born.
The QR Code quickly spread outside of Japan and were approved for many standards globally. But that wasn’t the end of the development of the QR Code. After all, nothing is perfect at its beginning and people soon began to present more requirements to Denso Wave. The variations (变体) of the QR Code were soon developed.
One of the biggest reasons why the QR Code has been able to be used widely is that Denso Wave made the decision to make the QR Code publicly available. This means anyone can use it without paying any fees. Denso Wave do hold a patent for the QR Code, but have declared that they have no intention to exercise it.
It wasn’t until 2002 that the first smartphones came to market with the QR Code scanner, and this really accelerated the technology. Once widespread on phones, almost anyone can read these codes and doesn’t require expensive hardware to do so. It is believed that Nokia is the first to bring this technology to a mobile device.

8 . Making friends is a skill like many other skills. It improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some actions. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home alone. Join a club or a group. Talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activities. Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all, meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are and try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.
Try to act self-confidently even if you don’t feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile.
If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.
Just meeting someone new does not mean that you will make friends with that person. Friendship is based on real liking and “give and take”. It takes time and effort to develop.
1. Which of the following can’t help us make friends?A.Staying at home. | B.Joining a group. |
C.Taking part in activities. | D.Talking with others. |

9 . After taking part in 53 rescue operations (救援行动), saving a dozen lives and finding over 40 bodies in disaster zones (灾区), Frida, the beautiful and brave 65-pound and 10-year-old yellow Labrador rescue dog has retired from active duty(现役)in the Mexican Navy.
The Mexican Navy celebrated the dog’s contributions (贡献) by honoring her in a ceremony on Monday, as part of the International Rescuers Day. “Her bark (吠声) always gave hope, and in moments of pain and uncertainty she brought comfort,” said Deputy Naval Minister Eduardo Redondo. The postal service honored three search-and-rescue dogs, Frida, Evil and Ecko, in a stamp, showing them wearing protectors.
As a local hero, her professional and tireless work won the love, support and respect of the people of Mexico. Mexico also put her painted picture on a huge advertising board. Frida’s stop board can also be seen on the roads of Mexico. A cartoon book and toy dolls are also designed for her.
The Mexican Navy said in July that Frida was a veteran of more than 9 years of rescue efforts across Mexico, Guatemala, Haiti, and Ecuador Frida helped with rescue efforts after the deadly earthquake in Port-au-Prince in 2010. But it wasn’t until September 2017 that she gained more international attention on social media after the Mexican Navy shared a video of her. Frida went with the first Search and Rescue team to look for the children reported missing in a school in Mexico City during the strong earthquake. The images traveled the world and became a hot topic to the point that famous actor Chris Evans shared the video saying, “What did we do to deserve (应得) dogs?”
Today, her protectors which she had worn to carry out tasks in Mexico and abroad were taken down and sent to EIBorcegu Shoe Museum Collection for exhibition.
