2 . Waiting for the bus every morning and going to school has never been better for Ryder Killam, a 5-year-old boy in a wheelchair. He no longer has to wait for the school bus in the open air thanks to Westerly High School students
The goal of the boy’s father, Tim Killam, was to keep his little kid protected from the bad weather while waiting for the bus every morning. He asked for an unused bus shelter on Facebook. After not being able to find a suitable one, he decided to contact the high school which had already performed several building projects for the community.
The students from Westerly High School construction class quickly put their hands to work. The bus stop was designed by pupil Mason Heald. The construction class, led by Dan McKenna, teaches its members basic building skills and is part of the high school Career and Technical Education program. More people from the local community helped make the project happen. Dillon Helbig transported the shelter from the high school to the Killams’address with his truck. And another neighbor lent his backhoe (反铲挖机) to properly position the shelter by the bus stop.
Not only did Ryder’s daily life improve, but the students also learnt an unforgettable life lesson. They saw that with their skills and knowledge they can make a real difference in someone else’s life

3 . Students at West Side Elementary School in California, with the help of their art teacher, created a telephone hotline to offer cheerful advice during difficult times. In just days, the hotline began getting thousands of calls an hour. The hotline, available in English and Spanish, offers the happy voices of children of different ages sharing positive messages.
Most people agree that with concerns like Covid-19, extreme weather, and the climate crisis, the last years have been stressful.
“To hear the pure joy from kids is extremely comforting in these difficult times,” art teacher Jessica Martin says.
Ms. Martin called the project “Pep Talk”, which later changed to “PepToc” to draw an ad for the hotline. The project had two parts, one the hotline, and the other creating encouraging posters. Along with artist Asherah, she worked with students from kindergarten to sixth grade. Students working on the hotline thought of what they would like to say. When they were ready, Ms. Martin recorded each one. Later, she sorted out the recordings into the different parts of the telephone hotline. For example, pressing 2 results in words of encouragement and life advice. This includes messages like: “The world is a better place with you in it.” and “You are okay!” Pressing 4, you hear the sounds of children laughing — a sound certain to bring a smile to anyone’s face. Other students took part in making encouraging posters to hang up around the town. Many posters had strips of paper that people passing by could tear off and take with them.
Ms. Martin thought the project would attract interest from people near the school. But word of the hotline spread quickly on social media. The hotline has become popular with stressed adults, patients in hospitals, older people in homes, and others to beat stress by hearing the happy voices of children.

4 . Sports can help us a lot. Taking exercises can make us strong. In collective sports like basketball, volleyball or football, we will learn the importance of cooperation. And sports can also help us relax after work or study.
However, as the saying goes, “there are two sides of everything.” Sometimes we may hurt other players or ourselves if we are not careful enough when participating in sports activities. What’s more, too much or hard practice can be bad for our health.
Sports can make us healthy both physically and psychologically. It is also a good way for people to know each other and can improve friendship between people. So long as we are careful enough, sports can do us nothing but good.

6 . Nowadays, schools still focus on traditional subjects more than modern subjects. Many subjects can not meet the needs of the future jobs. I completely agree with the statement that schools too much concentrate on traditional subjects.
To begin with, schools must be more flexible in the education because every student will choose and follow the different ways. So they need a different knowledge’s source. For example, the technology development is becoming a vital part in modern society which demands a number of skilled workforce (劳动力). As a result, if students are skilled in using computer or machine, they will achieve success in their career.
In addition, the traditional subjects always teach a lot of theories than skills. That is the reason why many students feel bored when studying them, such as history, literature or geography. But people can ignore them because all the subjects are concerned about culture and the society’s problems. So the education system should be improved. Instead of researching lessons in class or books, we need to hold the meeting or game shows to exchange knowledge and skills between students. Besides, schools have to add some soft skill subjects.
In conclusion, the traditional subjects are still being concentrated too much, Schools should improve systems so that students can acquire many new things and meet the needs in the world of work.

7 . When it comes to medical care, many patients and doctors believe “more is better”. But what they do not realize is that over-treatment-too many scans too many blood tests too many procedures (步骤) -may bring harm.
Terrence Power, for example, complained that after his wife learned she had Wegener’s disease, they found it difficult to refuse testing suggested by her doctor. The doctor insisted on office visits every three weeks, even when she was feeling well. He frequently ordered blood tests and X-rays, and repeatedly referred her to specialists for even minor complaints (疾病). Even when tests came back negative, more were ordered and she was hospitalized as prevention when she developed a cold. She had as many as 25 doctor visits during one six-month period. The couple was spending about $30, 000 a year for her care.
After several years of physical suffering and near financial ruin from the medical costs, the couple began questioning the treatment after discussing with other patients in online support groups. “It’s a really hard thing to determine when they’ve crossed the line,” Mr. Power said. “You think she’s getting the best care in the world, but after a while you start to wonder: What is the purpose?” Mr. Power then spoke with his own main care doctor who advised him to find a new specialist to oversee (监视) Mrs. Power’s care. Under the new doctor’s care, the regular testing stopped and Mrs. Power’s condition became stable.
Now she sees the doctor only four or five times a year.

8 . Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now the website BookCrossing.com turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group. Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it. Bruce Pederson, the managing director of Book Crossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”
Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.
People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Peterson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.
BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual(虚拟). The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-five countries.

10 . Long ago, many people had gardens. Fewer people were interested in having gardens. But in the past few years, this has begun to change. More people are starting to make gardens again. People of all ages are learning the joy of planting. Maybe you would like to start your own garden. It’s easier than you may think.
The first step is making some choices. What sort of plants do you like? What do you want to grow? Many people have flower gardens. People grow these gardens for the way that they look. They are pretty to look at. Flowers can have many shapes and many colors. Other people grow food in their gardens. They grow fruits and vegetables. These gardens are helpful. Some people like both types of gardens, so they have flowers and food.
After you choose the type of garden you want, you’ll need a good location for it. The best place for a small garden is in a yard. One of the most important things to look for is sun. Always put your garden in a sunny spot. You should also put your garden in a place that is easy to get to. And you will want to put flowers in a place where everyone can see them.
Each kind of plant is different. Once you choose the plants you want, you have to learn a little about them. Some plants grow best in spring. Others should be planted in summer. A few plants grow all year long. Choose when you will do your planting. Then choose the best plants to grow.
I’m sure you will enjoy your garden. Gardens can be very pretty. What’s nicer than seeing bright flowers all around you? You can also grow many kinds of great foods. Some people say food they grow themselves tastes better. Best of all, gardens are just plain fun.
