文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。根据皮尤2020年的一项研究,83%的青少年拥有自己的智能手机,越来越多的父母面临着这样一个问题:看还是不看?针对这一问题,作者给出了自己的看法。

1 . A few years ago, my sister-in-law started to feel concerned about her teenage daughter. What was she doing after school? Where was she spending her time? My niece was an excellent student, and took part in all kinds of after-class activities. Even so, her mom decided to put a tracking app (跟踪应用程序) on her kid’s phone.

At first, this made my sister-in-law “feel better”. Then the good situation suddenly ended. She recalled, “I found out that she was at a place where she said she wasn’t. I went out in the middle of the night and found her walking without shoes in the middle of the street with some friends.” Things went quickly downhill (每况愈下) for the mother and the daughter after that.

With 83% of teens having their own smart phones, according to a 2020 Pew study, more and more of their parents are facing the question: To watch or not?

Ana Homayoun, founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting, has advised many parents and their kids about this. “I’ve found the tracking app is more acceptable (可接受的) for teens when it is included as part of a family agreement to improve safety than when it is placed as a secret tool to watch them,” she said.

Mark Bell, a father of a teenage girl, said, “We don’t have tracking apps, but we have set some ground rules that my daughter must follow in exchange for us providing a smart phone,” he said. For example, his daughter must “friend (加为好友)” him on social media so that he can read posts, and must share all passwords.

When you’re trying to build trust, you need to create an environment that encourages it. So, to win their trust, you always need to be straight with (对……坦诚的) your children. “Parents must let children know how and when they’ll be watching them,” said Doctor Pauleh Weigle. If they’re not open about it, he warns, it can “greatly damage the parent and child relationship”.

1. What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.The author’s niece sometimes lied to her mother.
B.The author’s niece did worse and worse in her studies.
C.The author’s niece always followed her mother’s orders.
D.The author’s niece liked the tracking app on her phone.
2. What did Ana Homayoun suggest parents use the tracking app for?
A.Their kids’ relations.B.Their kids’ secrets.
C.Their kids’ health.D.Their kids’ security.
3. How can Mark Bell’s daughter have a smart phone?
A.She ought to earn money to pay for it.
B.She must follow some ground rules.
C.She should put a tracking app on her phone.
D.She has to tell him where she is anytime.
4. What is Doctor Pauleh Weigle’s opinion about parents using a tracking app?
A.Letting them check their children’s phones often.
B.Teaching their children how to use their phones better.
C.Telling their children to use their phones less and less.
D.Making their children know how and when they will watch them.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。讲述的是作者六年前经历的一次异常惊险的飞行,一位母亲的话语让作者知道了到底什么是勇气。

2 . I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I speak of it without tears filling my eyes at the memory.

Our flight left the Orlando Airport one Friday morning. But immediately upon the take-off, it was clear that something was wrong. The aircraft was bumping (颠簸) up and down. All the experienced travellers, including me, looked around with knowing (会意的) smiles. If you fly much, you see these things and learn to act calmly about them. However, we did not remain calm for long.

Minutes after we were in the air, our plane began falling quickly. The pilot soon made a serious announcement. “We are having some difficulties,” he said. “Our indicators show that the control system has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando Airport. The flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are dumping (倾倒) fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a rough touchdown.” In other words, we were about to crash. Many travellers looked visibly frightened now. No one faces death without fear, I thought.

Then a couple of rows to my left, I heard a still calm voice, a woman’s voice, speaking in an absolutely normal conversational tone. I had to find the source of this voice. All around, people cried. Many screamed. Finally, I saw her. In this state of complete confusion and lack of order, a mother was talking to her child. The woman, in her mid-30s, was staring full into the face of her daughter, who looked to be four years old. The child listened closely, sensing the importance of her mother’s words. The mother’s eye held the child so fixed that she seemed untouched by the sounds of grief and fear around her.

Finally, I leaned over and could hear this soft sure voice with the tone of comfort. Over and over again, the mother said, “I love you so much. Remember, no matter what happens, I love you always.” Fortunately, our landing gear (起落架) held at last and our touchdown was not a tragedy.

However, the voice I heard that day never faded. That mom showed me what a real hero looks like.

1. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A.The crew was getting ready for a take-off.
B.The travellers were taken good care of on the plane.
C.The aircraft was not in normal condition when flying.
D.The passengers were enjoying themselves on the aircraft.
2. Why were they dumping fuel from the airplane?
A.To prepare for a landing.B.To have the airplane not bump.
C.To make the airplane to fly faster.D.To make sure the control system worked well.
3. How was the woman after hearing the pilot’s words?
A.She looked quite angry.B.She didn’t appear so worried.
C.She felt extremely nervous.D.She sounded rather hopeless.
4. What do we know about the child on the plane after the announcement was made?
A.She paid attention to her mother’s words.
B.She screamed and cried with other passengers.
C.She comforted her mother after hearing the emergency.
D.She didn’t seem to be interested in what her mother said.

3 . All ship suffer from fouling (污垢): the build-up below the waterline of shellfish, seaweeds and other organisms. This causes drag, which slows the affected craft and increases its fuel consumption (消耗). Regular hull (船体) cleaning thus makes a considerable difference to the profitability of shipping. It also results in a useful reduction in the amount of planet-warming carbon dioxide.

Roar Adland, a shipping economist at the Norwegian School of Economics, in Bergen, says that a midsized oil tanker’s fuel consumption drops by around 9% after its hull is cleaned at sea -- something that happens, on average, once every six or seven months. If the cleaning is done in a dry dock (船坞), which allows the process to be more thorough, that figure can be as much as 17%.

At the moment, cleaning at sea is done by teams of divers. In recent years, robots have sometimes been added to underwater cleaning crews. They have proved potent. Jotun, a Norwegian coatings (涂层) company, and Semcon, a Swedish engineering firm, propose, however, to go one step further. They want to replace the divers completely with a machine. That machine, moreover, would not merely help clean a ship’s hull, but stop it fouling up in the first place.

Their invention, HullSkater, is a 200kg robot. It will stay permanently on a ship, ready to be launched whenever the ship is not moving. To use the robot, it is first lowered overboard. Its four magnetic wheels, each of which is fitted with a motor, hold onto the hull and it can start moving around. After this, the ship’s crew need do nothing. The robot is piloted by an operator on land, who may be half a world away. Inspecting and cleaning a hull takes HullSkater between two and eight hours, depending on the size and design of the ship.

The HullSkater approach is not absolutely ideal. Regular cleaning by a robot could wear away some types of antifouling coating. Jotun has, however, developed a special, hard-wearing coating to deal with the problem. HullSkater is now being tested in various parts of the world for rates of fouling depending on local conditions, such as sea temperatures, and the plan is to make it available commercially soon.

1. What will happen when a ship fouls up?
A.Its fuel will be polluted.B.Its coating will come off.
C.Its motors will stop working.D.Its shipping expenses will increase.
2. What does the underlined word “potent” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Costly.B.Noisy.C.Effective.D.Complex.
3. What can be learned about HullSkater?
A.It can be operated by people from a distance.B.It keeps working while the ship is sailing.
C.It has one motor weighing around 200kg.D.It can give a hull a thorough clean in an hour.
4. For what purpose has Jotun made an improvement to its products?
A.To make HullSkater more lightweight.B.To adapt to rising sea temperatures.
C.To help a ship travel much father.D.To protect the surface of a hull.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了应用程序PetNow,它可以通过狗的鼻纹对狗进行识别。

5 . Until now the usual way we identify dogs is with micro-chipping. In some countries it’s even the law. But a company from South Korea has developed an app that can identify dogs a little less invasively. On this phone, I’ve got the new app, PetNow, which is now using the dog’s nose print to identify a dog, just like you can use a fingerprint with a human to make identification. A dog’s nose print is very similar as well.

“Now show me your nose, buddy.” It takes me a few seconds to take pictures of the dog’s nose. “Oh yes, I made it, okay! Then who is the dog? Is it Emma, Lenard, Karl, or Ethan?”

The app analyses the data in the cloud and tells me that this is Emma, and not only that, it’s showing me that Emma’s been reported as missing. And it’s telling me where she was reported missing, and I can share my location with the owner, so they can be reunited.

Unlike a micro-chip, which could be cut out of a stolen dog, you can’t really remove a dog’s nose, not without spoiling the dog. And by using the phone’s camera to scan, anyone in theory can check a stray dog without any specialist equipment.

Recently, I’ve spoken to PetNow to find out why they’d settled on nose prints for dog recognition. There may be paws or ears, but some dogs really hate showing up, sharing their paws or their ears. Nose is actually exposed all the time. And after a dog become six months old the nose print stays there their entire life, so we believe that it is the best part for identification.

PetNow hopes its app will become mandatory in South Korea to help reduce the number of dogs that are abandoned by pet owners. To do that they will need the backing of government and a huge marketing push, so that everybody including people who don’t own a dog must install the app and know how to use it.

1. Which can be inferred from the passage?
A.Dogs’ prints are very similar.
B.Micro-chipping a dog is out of date.
C.The app can map out a lost dog’s original place.
D.The app requires specialist equipment.
2. Why did PetNow settle on nose prints for dog recognition?
A.Because a micro-chip can be cut out.
B.Because some dogs hate showing up.
C.Because their nose print never changes.
D.Because their nose is easy to be photographed.
3. Which of the word best explains the underlined word “mandatory” in the last paragraph?
A.safe.B.required.C.professional.D.easy.
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Taking Pictures for Dog’s Nose.B.Nose Print Technology on the Way.
C.PetNow Saves Abandoned Dogs.D.PetNow Identifies Dogs with Nose Print.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者在成长过程中经常遇到困难,所以无论发生什么,都习惯了勇往直前。

7 . If I have a goal in life, it isn’t to be driving a Rolls-Royce. It’s to be giving away more than $1,000,000 a year and having an impact on people’s lives. I have the success today because I always had to work for what I wanted. I grew up accustomed to risks and disappointments, so I was used to moving forward, no matter what.

In 2008, I went to Los Angeles where I tried to get hired as an agent, an analyst and a financial broker. Unfortunately, all these doors slammed in my face. The world’s economy was in a bad state, so I knew I would have to do a little spinning of my own.

Youth involves a certain innocence but also perseverance. The word “can’t” wasn’t in my vocabulary. I partnered with a friend buying distressed multifamily properties around Houston. Even though we were enthusiastic and backed with start-up sums, I didn’t make a deal work. My friend moved on to other projects. Alone, I put all my money into the next real-estate project. I put the time in, I dreamed it, but once again the deal fell through. Two months later, though, the deal came back around. That was when the path opened, luck changed, and I was ready to form my own company. I haven’t looked back. Only ahead.

I’m now able to give back to communities and causes. I donate about $500,000 a year, much of that going to research to cure rare diseases. We also support a lot of services for disadvantaged children in Houston and other places.

I have always been someone who can see the big picture and have never been distracted by things that get in the way. There are lessons to be learned, and the biggest of those is to keep going. You may have to change the path, but always keep that vision in front of you.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了研究人员目前正在设计发光的花朵和装饰性植物,它们可以为客厅投下绿色的光。通过它的发光来观察植物的健康状况可以是一种即时衡量其健康状况的方法。

8 . Earth is lighted up by bioluminescence(生物发光)but, for many of us,seeing the natural phenomenon is a rare treat:Catching the glow(光)of a firefly or witnessing a dolphin swimming through electric blue waters is a thrill.

Researchers are currently engineering glowing flowers and decorative plants that can cast a green light onto our living rooms. Observing plant’s health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one.

A study published on Monday in Nature Biotechnology shows that this goal is well on its way to being a reality. The study authors announce they’ve created a method that causes plants to glow much brighter, and for a longer period of time, than previous efforts.Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years.

The research was conducted through a teamwork between three scientific institutions and Plant,a biotech startup in Moscow. When this team examined a poisonous mushroom, they discovered that caffeic acid is responsible for its bioluminescence. In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted(嵌入)enzymes(酶) —which are specific to the mushroom —into the DNA of tobacco plants. In turn, the enzymes were able to interact with the caffeic acid in the tobacco plants, and cause them to glow both in the dark and in the daylight.

This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn’t harm the health of the plants. Interestingly, the light decreased as the leaves aged—but it also increased when the leaves were damaged. In turn, the team suggested this method could also help other researchers monitor plant responses to various pressures and changes in the environment. If a plant is short of water or a hungry sheep is harming a plant, bioluminescence could warn of this damage before it’s too late.

1. How can people quickly identify a decorative flower’s health condition?
A.By monitoring its glow.B.By making it greener.
C.By testing the chemicals in it.D.By putting it in the living room.
2. What can we expect of the adapted glowing plants?
A.They may take the place of lamps.B.They will appear on the market.
C.They can light up a whole living room.D.They glow less bright than previous efforts.
3. What did the team do with the mushroom in the new study?
A.They inserted caffeic acid into it.B.They made it give out brighter light.
C.They grew it on the tobacco plants farm.D.They put its enzymes into the tobacco plants.
4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Warning of potential damage from glowing plants.
B.Increasing light when glowing plants receive damage.
C.Effects of continuous light production on the glowing plants.
D.Benefits of combining specific enzymes with caffeic acid in plants.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者通过记叙自己辞去稳定工作去开店这件事激励读者只有遵循自己的内心,才会真正热爱生活。

9 . I used to have a “dream job”. At least, that’s how many people saw it. It was a highly desirable government position that included a guaranteed retirement and a lifetime medical plan. It was also nearly impossible to get fired.

But I was miserable every day. As soon as I clocked into work, all my energy—and in turn, all my desire for life—faded away.

Instead, I thought about my side business. For a few years, I’d been running an auto shop in my home garage. I specialized in repairing and modifying classic cars. At one point, I hung up a print (照片) of my favorite automotive shop as a source of inspiration. I knew the owner’s story well: He has a tight work schedule, but his work ethic, artistry, and authenticity never falter(衰退).

In 2019, one of my clients offered me an actual industrial space to run my shop. I was nervous to say yes. Could I really expand my business and keep my government job? Was it wise to give up something with so much security?

Then it dawned on me: The “dream job” had a guaranteed retirement plan for people who work there for 30 years—but after 30 year, would elderly me look back and regret not seizing the opportunity to do things on my own terms? I had my answer.

In 2020, I left the dream job to run my business full time. In 2021, I somehow kept the business afloat, and we moved into a shop that’s double the size. That’s when I realized that my print was still hanging up back at my “first” garage. I thought about how much that print meant to me back then, and how it deserved a place of prominence(杰出) at my new location.

It is now proudly displayed in my humble shop, along with a banner given to me by the owner of the store that I like. It serves as a reminder to hold myself to the same ethos as he—tireless work ethic, ever-evolving artistry, and genuine authenticity. Frankly, this path has not been easy. Since starting my own business, never in my life have I been so tired, frustrated, or anxious. But I live on my own terms and love every second of life.

1. How did the author probably feel about his “dream job”?
A.Fairly painful.B.Rather busy.
C.A bit regretful.D.Very enjoyable.
2. Why did the author mention his favorite automotive shop owner in Paragraph 3?

C.He always worked according to his schedule.
D.He was an inspiration for the author to own a shop.
3. What did the author mean by his answer?
A.He would refuse to accept the owner’s offer.
B.He would give up his dream job in the end.
C.He would value the print offered by the owner.
D.He would keep a strong desire for his dream job.
4. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.All hard work will pay off.
B.We should respect our heart.
C.There is no shortcut to success.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,过去五年中将塑料转化为布料的一种环保做法而产生的微纤维可能是海洋中塑料的最大来源。

10 . The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the past five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into clothing to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers(微纤维)could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.

Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years. He explains that every time synthetic(合成)clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers enter the sewer and finally end up in the sea.

In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples(样本)from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.

This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can take in other pollutants.

Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution”. Ever though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he’s had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support “Benign by Design”, his research project, which is trying to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one woman’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.

1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.New microfibers have been discovered.
B.Making clothes from plastic bottles can’t solve the pollution.
C.The use of plastic bottle has been reduced in the past five years.
D.Turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing hasn’t been put into practice.
2. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.How to wash synthetic clothes.
B.How to prevent plastic pollution.
C.How microfibers end up in the sea.
D.Relationship between synthetic clothes and microfibers.
3. How does Browne’s Benign by Design research project run?
A.It has achieved great success.
B.It is facing some difficulties.
C.It is supported by many firms.
D.It hasn’t got anything done.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution?
B.The impact of Microfibers on the sea.
C.Environmental protection: moving forward or backward?
D.Turning plastic into clothing, a new step in environmental protection.
