1 . Qi Haoran, a Junior One student, was quite busy over the past winter vacation – and not just with homework. Qi, together with 10 other classmates made a volunteer group to call on people to join the Clean Your Plate Campaign (光盘行动).

The 11 students went to many restaurants and told people the importance of saving food. “Excuse me, do you know that 950 million people around the world still haven’t got enough to eat? Could you please not waste food?” They would say this kind of thing hundreds of times every day.

The Clean Your Plate Campaign began on the Internet in January. It calls on people to reduce food waste.

China in these years had serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.

Chinese people are well known for being hospitable (好客的) and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all their food.

Luckily the campaign has got the support of many. In a restaurant in Xinjiang, the owner gives the guests who have eaten up all that they ordered a sticker. People can enjoy a free meal when they have 10 stickers. More than 750 restaurants in Beijing have begun to offer smaller dishes and encourage their guests to take leftovers(吃剩的食物) home.

4 . We have always been interested in the moon. 2000 years ago people already knew it moved around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. At that time, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully in the sky.

When scientists could use telescopes to study the moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on Earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that had been caught in the earth's gravity (引力) millions of years earlier.

In 1969 moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again new ideas were needed for this new information.

After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of Earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 million years ago, something about the size of Mars hit Earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.

In the future, even though our ideas about the moon may change again, we will still be interested in it.

A.Why people are interested in the moon.
B.How ideas about the moon have changed over time.

6 . Todd Steinkamp left his hotel around 5:30 a. m. for a funeral in Green Bay. Wisconsin. About half an hour into his journey on the road, he noticed a strange sound coming from the front tire (轮胎). By 7 a. m, he still had 70 miles ahead of him, but the noise was so loud that he knew he had no choice but to stop.

Steinkamp thought there was little chance anyone in the little town could help him so early in the morning. Still, he took his chance at a repair shop and asked for help. The worker Geib checked out the car. Geib told Steinkamp the wheel bearing (轴承) was failing. Fixing it would take a few hours. And without being repaired, the car couldn't go further.

7 . For years and years people have been saying that railways are dead. “We can do without railways,” people say--as if motorcars and planes have made those railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, lose money and are dying. But this is far from the truth. In these days of expensive oil, railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What’s more, a railway takes you from the city centre into another centre. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.

Far from being dead, railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are travelling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning, for we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, which are travelling at 250 miles an hour or more. So we will be wondering why we spend so much on motorcars we can't use and planes we can't fly in. After all, we have not enough money to buy the oil.

1. People say railways are unnecessary because they think ______.
A.trains cause traffic jams
B.trains carry goods only
C.trains go in a straight line
D.trains are slow and lose money
2. The writer’s idea seems to be that ______.
A.motorcars and planes are better than trains
B.trains go as fast as motorcars and planes
C.we still need railways in modern times
D.trains have nothing in common with motorcars
3. Compared with planes, one of the advantages of trains is that they ______.
A.can take you from place to place
B.carry goods and people cheaply
C.don't hold you up on the way
D.can travel at 250 miles an hour
4. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.It is more expensive to travel by train than by plane.
B.No railway station is at the city centre.
C.It is comfortable travelling on a train.
D.Planes and motorcars have replaced trains.
5. What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Railways, Still Alive.
B.Planes Are Dead.
C.Trains, Motorcars or Planes?
D.Super-fast Trains.

10 . There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health, wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.

People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into n habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize it had effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position, or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start, step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

2. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means “           “.
A.have a good taste with social life

A.we should pity all such unhappy people
B.such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
C.people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
D.unhappy people cannot understand happy persons
4. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should         .
A.prevent any communication with them
B.show no respect and politeness to them
C.persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D.quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
5. In this passage, the writer mainly           .
A.describes two types of people in our 1ife who have negative effect on others
B.give some examples to laugh at the unhappy people in our society
C.suggests the unhappy people should get rid of the habits of unhappiness
D.tells people get away from unhappy people and how to be happy in life
