2 . From childhood to adulthood, you go through a lot of changes — jobs, regrettable haircuts and relationships that come and go. But what about who you are? As you grow older, does your personality change?

Personality is the pattern(模式) of thoughts, feelings and behaviors unique to a person. People always think of personality as fixed(固定的). But according to psychologists, that’s not how it works. “Personality is developing. It’s not just something that you’re stuck with and can’t get over,” said Brent Roberts, a psychologist at the University of Illinois.

That’s not to say that you’re a different person each day you wake up. In the short term, change can be nearly impossible to see, Roberts told Live Science. Longitudinal studies, in which researchers survey(调查) the personalities of participants(参与者) regularly over many years, suggest that our personality is actually stable in the short term.

But those years add up, throughout which our personality is still changing, but slowly, Roberts said. “It’s something that’s unnoticeable,” he added. You don’t feel it on that five-to-10-year time period, but in the long term, it becomes obvious. In 1960, psychologists surveyed over 440,000 high school students — around 5% of all students in the country at that time. The students answered questions about everything from how they behaved in emotional(情绪的) situations to how well and effectively they got work done. Fifty years later, researchers tracked down(追踪到) 1,952 of these former students and gave them the same survey. The results found that in their 60s, participants scored much higher than they had as teenagers.

Some people might change less than others, but in general, the maturity principle(成熟原则) goes for everyone. That makes personality change even harder to realize in ourselves — how your personality compares with that of your peers doesn’t change as much as our overall change in personality, because everyone else is changing right along with you. “It has been proved that the self-control of a 30-year-old is higher than a 20-year-old,” Donnellan said. “At the same time, people who are more self-controlled at 18 are also possibly more self-controlled at age 30.”

1. What does the writer think of personality?
A.It is what makes you different from others.
B.It is fixed since you were born.
C.It works when we meet difficulties.
D.It changes obviously from day to day.
2. What does the underlined word “stable” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.not easily upset.B.easy to change.
C.not likely to change.D.difficult to destroy.
3. How does the writer support his idea?
A.By giving examples.B.By stating arguments.
C.By explaining causes.D.By providing research results.
4. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Everyone Has a Unique Personality.
B.Our Personality Changes as We Get Older.
C.Self-control Makes All the Difference.
D.We Grow Older but Change Less.

3 . With no end in sight to the coronavirus pandemic(新冠疫情), it looks like protective face wear is here to stay.

But who says it can’t be stylish?

Throughout the pandemic, designers have been bringing out their face masks— luxury(奢华) versions include Off-White’s popular $95 Arrow logo face mask and Burberry’s vintage check cotton design, selling for £90 ($115).

And now, Louis Vuitton is taking it a step further, making a luxury face shield(护罩) that’s designed to be “both stylish and protective”, the French fashion house said.

The “eye-catching” LV Shield changes from clear to dark in sunlight, protecting wearers from the sun. It also has golden studs with Louis Vuitton’s logo and an elastic headband(松紧带). The visor(面盔) can also be worn upward as a classic cap.

The shield has not yet been priced, but as a high-end fashion brand, it may not be cheap. Other Louis Vuitton head wear, including hats and sunglasses, sell for hundreds of dollars.

The face shield will be sold online and at select Louis Vuitton stores starting on October 30th.

In April, Louis Vuitton joined the global effort to make personal protective equipment to support health care workers on the front lines of the pandemic. The company said it had repurposed several of its workshops across France to “produce hundreds of thousands of non-medical face masks” for health care workers.

The company also said it was giving away thousands of hospital clothing to six Paris hospitals in need of protective suits.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend using face shields as masks, because it is not clear what level of protection they provide.

A.To reduce pressure on faces.
B.To cut the cost of face masks.
C.To make the wearers feel protected and fashionable.
D.To bring out a classic face mask

4 . A Journey to the Yosemite Firefall

Each year, thousands of people are attracted to the Yosemite National Park in California for a chance of seeing —and photographing ——the unique “firefall”. The amazing “firefall” comes to life only when there is enough water from the melting(融化)snow to keep the Horsetail Fall flowing and when the light of the setting sun hits the waterfall at the right angle. It can only be seen for a short time in February on clear sunny days.

This year, the weather isn’t stopping the “firefall” from happening, but it is making the journey to see it more difficult.

“What would have been a 10-minute walk turned into a two-hour hike through deep snow,” photographer Ryan Fitzsimons said about his recent trip to see the phenomenon. “Our clothes were all wet by the time we got to a viewing site. But the heavy snow made the sight much more beautiful since the waterfall is much bigger this year.”

Another photographer Andy Heitz was making his first trip to see the “firefall”. He had to wait five hours in the extreme cold for his turn to take a picture.

“I got to the site at about 12:00 at noon. The place was already filled with hundreds of people waiting to see and photograph the ‘firefall’. I was so lucky that I shot a really wonderful burner! I was completely amazed with what I saw,” he said. “You know, only on a couple days of the year in February and when the sun sets down at the perfect angle to shine on Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall can we see the ‘Fire Fall’. I’ll never forget what I have seen.’’

The “firefall” should continue to be there from 20 to 24 February. But park officials said that there’s no guarantee(保证)that visitors will see it on any given day.

1. When might be the best time to take pictures of the “firefall”?
A.Early in the morning.B.At noon.
C.Late in the afternoon.D.At night.
2. Why might the “firefall” disappear between 20 to 24 February this year?
A.There wouldn’t be enough snow.B.It might be too cloudy.
C.The waterfall might not freeze.D.The snow might melt too fast.
3. What does the underlined word “burner” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.A worker in the kitchen.
B.The fire in the Yosemite National Park.
C.A part of a cooker or stove.
D.The unique Horsetail Fall in the setting sun.
4. What is the main purpose of this text?
A.To introduce an attraction.B.To give suggestions for a trip.
C.To advertise a park in the US.D.To explain what is a “firefall”.

5 . Convincing someone to change their mind is really the process of convincing them to change their tribe (部落). If they abandon their beliefs, they run the risk of losing social ties. You can’t expect someone to change their mind if you take away their community too.

The way to change people’s minds is to become friends with them, to combine them into your tribe, to bring them into your circle. Now, they can change their beliefs without the risk of being abandoned socially.

The British philosopher Alain de Botton suggests that we simply share meals with those who disagree with us: “Sitting down at a table with a group of strangers has the incomparable and odd benefit of making it a little more difficult to hate them without punishment. Prejudice and conflict between groups of people from different nations or races feed off abstraction. However, during a meal, something about handing dishes around, unfolding napkins (餐巾纸) at the same moment, even asking a stranger to pass the salt makes us less likely to hold the belief that the outsiders who wear unusual clothes and speak in distinctive accents deserve to be sent home or attacked. For all the large-scale political solutions which have been proposed to ease racial or cultural conflict, there are few more effective ways to promote tolerance between suspicious neighbours than to force them to eat supper together.”

Perhaps it is not difference, but distance that produces tribalism and unfriendliness. As proximity increases, so does understanding. I am reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s quote, “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.” Facts don’t change our minds. Friendship does.

The Japanese writer Haruki Murakami once wrote, “Always remember that to argue, and win, is to break down the reality of the person you are arguing against. It is painful to lose your reality, so be kind, even if you are right.”

When we are in the moment, we can easily forget that the goal is to connect with the other side, cooperate with them, befriend them, and integrate them into our tribe. We are so caught up in winning that we forget about connecting. It’s easy to spend your energy labeling people rather than working with them.

The word “kind (family and relatives)” originated from the word “kin (old fashion of family and relatives).” When you are kind to someone, it means you are treating them like family. This, I think, is a good method for actually changing someone’s mind. Develop a friendship. Share a meal. Gift a book. Be kind first, be right later.

1. People are likely to change their mind when they ________.
A.change their beliefsB.are made friends with
C.move to a new communityD.are given somewhere to go
2. According to the passage, sharing meals is effective in building connections because it ________.
A.pleases people with different beliefs or accents
B.makes people focus on eating rather than conflicts
C.brings benefits to the people having dinner together
D.promotes understanding and tolerance among people
3. What does the underlined word “proximity” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Nearness.B.Action.C.Communication.D.Politeness.
4. The author quotes from Haruki Murakami to imply(暗示) that ________.
A.breaking down one’s reality is easy
B.kindness is more important than right
C.arguing and winning are not important
D.losing one’s identity is a painful process

8 . You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen (新生) , you still feel nervous that you don't know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?

Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognise a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with them can help you develop friendships.

The work in high school is something that freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.

High school also has more extracurricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.

High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.

1. What does the underlined word “orientation” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Training.B.Game.
C.Discussion.D.Examination.
2. What are freshmen probably worried about?
A.The learning task.B.The ability to make friends.
C.The relationship with teachers.D.The freshman orientation.
3. Extra-curricular activities mainly help students ________.
A.build up healthy bodiesB.develop friendships
C.develop the interestsD.improve their learning ability
4. Who is this passage written for?

9 . As we slide even closer to Father's Day during these pandemic (流行病)times, I can’ t help but feel super privileged to tell you about one extraordinary dad. He's a dad so good that after he was done raising his own kids, he took to YouTube to do some more dadding to millions of complete and total strangers in need.

Rob Kenney's childhood had a theme that, sadly, is not at all uncommon for American kids: fatherlessness. His father left his family when he was just twelve years old, and statistics say that lines up with the experience of about 25% of kids today. Many lessons a dad would teach a kid, he just had to learn on his own. However, Kenney swore that his own kids would not have that experience, and after successfully raising two kids into two adults, he's branching out to help fatherless kids just like him in the coolest way possible.

Kenney has started a YouTube channel called “Dad, How Do I?" to show fatherless kids a variety of “how to' s" over the everyday tasks of living. From “how to tie a tie" to "how to shave your face" to "how to check your car's oil" , Kenney’s videos are readily understood, though almost entirely unedited.

In the past week, thanks to some viral posts on Twitter and Facebook by influencers, Kenney's channel has gone from a handful of subscribers to 1.97 million! It just goes to show you how much his " Practical 'Dadvice'   for everyday tasks" is needed and appreciated by fatherless kids everywhere --- not to mention adults who just simply don ' t know how to do stuff. The viewers ' comments on Kenney's YouTube channel can move even the hard-hearted to tears.

1. What's the author's main purpose of writing the text?
A.To celebrate Father's Day.
B.To introduce a kind father.
C.To stress the major role fathers play.
D.To warn people against the pandemic.
2. Why did Kenney create his YouTube channel?
A.To make a name for himself.
B.To set an example to his kids.
C.To direct parents to bring up their kids.
D.To teach fatherless kids to do everyday things.
3. What does the author think of Kenney's videos?
A.Complex.B.Well edited.
C.Slightly abstract.D.Straightforward.
4. What does the last paragraph tell us about Kenney?
A.The popularity of his channel.
B.His thanks to enthusiastic posters.
C.The necessity of updating his videos.
D.His comments on hard-hearted viewers.

10 . The bell rang. Jada sighed, slowly moved from the lockers where she had been leaning, and headed down the hall to her chemistry class. Honors Chemistry! Jada couldn't believe that her mom was making her take the class because Jada's counselor had said that she had real talent in science.

Jada had to admit that she liked science and that last year's class was a breeze, but come on, Honors Chemistry? She wouldn't know anyone in the class, and they probably wouldn't know anyone like her.

The good thing about being late is that it shortened the period a bit. The bad thing is that it made her seem like she was making a grand entrance. To make matters worse, the only two seats left in class were at the lab table at the very front of the room.

Jada held her breath and walked in. Everyone's eyes were on her. She just knew it. They were staring at her coal black hair(freshly dyed), her black lipstick, her black fingernail polish, and her thrift-store black leather jacket. All she saw were polo shirts and khaki pants.

This can't get any worse, Jada thought. But at least she didn't get shouted at by the teacher. He was too busy talking to a new kid. A HUGE new kid, maybe 6'4". He had to weigh at least 250 pounds. A football player, probably. She hated football players. They thought they were so great. That group of jocks that hung out by the cafeteria always made fun of her.

The new kid made his way over to her table with his head down. He had to squeeze into the seat, and his legs wouldn't fit under the lab table. He shot Jada a glance and turned red.

Mr. Martin, the teacher, began class with this announcement: "Okay, everyone. I know most of you know each other from last year's Honors Physical Science class." Jada sighed loudly. "But just take a minute and introduce yourself to the person sitting at your table. You'll be partners. You'll be working closely together all year."

Jada rolled her eyes and stared straight ahead. Then she heard a surprisingly soft voice from next to her. "Hi, I'm Robert. I'm new here."…

1. What can be learned about Jada from the first two paragraphs?
A.She thought this year's chemistry class would be a breeze.

C.give readers a general impression of science students
D.imply that she felt sorry for making a grand entrance
3. In paragraph 5, the phrase "that group of jocks" refers to________.
A.the new kidB.Jada's classmatesC.Jada's teacherD.football players
4. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true of the new kid?
A.He was rude.B.He liked sports.C.He was shy.D.He looked sad.
